Cartographer and Royal Illustrator
John Speed was an English cartographer and illustrator who worked for Queen Elizabeth I. He is best known for his maps of England and Ireland, which were published in 1610. Speed was born in 1552 in London, England. He studied at Cambridge University and later worked as a cartographer and illustrator for the English monarchy. Speed's maps were highly influential and helped to establish the modern concept of a map as a two-dimensional representation of a region.
