John Gorton was an Australian politician who served as the 19th Prime Minister of Australia from 1968 to 1971. He was a member of the Liberal Party and was known for his conservative policies. Gorton was born in 1911 in Melbourne, Australia and studied law at the University of Melbourne. He was elected to the Australian Parliament in 1954 and served as a member of the House of Representatives until his retirement in 1971. Gorton was also a prominent figure in the Australian Liberal Party and served as the party's leader from 1966 to 1968. He was knighted in 1967 for his services to the Commonwealth. Gorton passed away in 2002 at the age of 90.
