Augustinian priest and theologian
Johannes von Staupitz was a German Augustinian priest and theologian who played a significant role in the Protestant Reformation. Born in Saxony, von Staupitz studied theology at the University of Erfurt and later became a professor of theology at the University of Wittenberg. He was a close friend and mentor to Martin Luther, and his influence helped shape Luther's theological views. Von Staupitz was also a key figure in the establishment of the University of Wittenberg and served as its vicar-general. He died in 1539.
