First mayor of Paris and president of the National Assembly
Jean-Sylvain Bailly was a prominent figure during the French Revolution. An astronomer and académicien, he was elected as the first president of the newly formed National Assembly and later became the first mayor of Paris. Bailly attempted to mediate between the people and King Louis XVI, but his role in the Champ de Mars incident in 1791 led to his condemnation by the revolutionaries.
