Gregory Boyington was an American combat pilot and Marine Corps fighter ace during World War II. He received the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. Boyington was born on December 4, 1912, in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1933 and served in the U.S. Navy before joining the Marine Corps in 1941. Boyington flew combat missions in the Pacific Theater and was a commander of the Black Sheep Squadron. He was killed in action on January 11, 1988, at the age of 75.
