South African cardiothoracic surgeon
Christiaan Barnard was a South African cardiothoracic surgeon. He was born in 1922 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Barnard studied at the University of Cape Town and later at the University of Oxford. He is best known for performing the world's first human-to-human heart transplant in 1967. Barnard was also a pioneer in the field of cardiac surgery and made significant contributions to the development of heart transplantation.
