Poet and scholar of Kashmiri culture
Agha Shahid Ali was a Pakistani-American poet, essayist, and scholar of Kashmiri culture. He was born in 1954 in Srinagar, Kashmir, and later moved to the United States. Ali was a professor of English at the University of Maryland and was known for his poetry and essays on Kashmiri culture and politics. He was also a prominent voice on issues related to Kashmir and its people. Ali was awarded the T.S. Eliot Prize for Poetry in 1997 and the Griffin Poetry Prize in 2006. He passed away in 2011.
