It's April 21st, this is Durham News Today, powered by AI, I'm Corey with the story. Yelp just dropped a new AI chatbot to cut through the noise on local spots. It scans tons of user reviews super quick to spit out Taylor Picks, like the best coffee joint for you and your pup, then pulls up the exact reviews, backing it up. Yelp's CEO Jeremy Stoppelman says this thing crunches 500 reviews in a second, way faster than scrolling the top view yourself. Unlike big players like Chad Gbt or Google's AI, it always shows its homework to build trust. Users have been side-eying AI for fake info, so Yelp built this with transparency front and center after their own surveys. Meanwhile, the company stock has flatlined since late 2022, even as AI hype doubled the NASDAQ. Yelp pulls most of its US traffic from Google and has beefed up over reviews getting swiped, leading to a federal trade commission probe back in. 2013, and now an anti-trust suit set for trial in May 2028.
To shake things up and grow beyond 1.5 billion in yearly revenue, they're licensing data to open AI while banking on this chatbot to hook. More folks with spot-on, people powered wrecks that feel personal.
