Yazeed Convicted in Aniah Blanchard's Murder

0:00Birmingham stories, making news on March 19th. After more than six years, a Macon County jury convicted 36-year-old Ibrahimia Zaid in the murder of 19-year-old Anaya Blanchard. He was found guilty of both murder and felony murder in her 2019 kidnapping and shooting death while she was a student at Southern, Union State Community College. Prosecutors showed she was grabbed from an Auburn gas station, shot in the head, and left in rural Macon County. Yazeed was free on bond at the time for his own kidnapping and attempted murder charges. Blanchard's family filled the courtroom wearing blue, her favorite color. Her mother, Angela Haley Harris, turned the tragedy into action by pushing for Anaya's law, which lets judges hold certain violent suspects without bail. The U.S. Marshall Service joined the hunt and caught Yazeed after spotting him near the abduction site. He originally faced capital murder charges that convened the death penalty. Yazeed now looks at life in prison as sentencing wraps up.
