In China, this hits close to home, as President Xi Jinping has built a system around his own authority with no obvious successor in sight. This week, the country kicks off its annual two sessions, a key political meeting where delegates rubber stamp economic goals and show unity. After Mao Zedong died, China's leaders learned from the chaos of power struggles and created a more orderly way to hand off control. They set in formal retirement ages, groomed younger officials through party, government and military roles, and made transitions predictable, like, when Jiang Zemin passed the baton to Hu Jintao, and then to Xi in 2012, but Xi changed the game. He scrapped presidential term limits in 2018, grabbed a third term as party boss in 2022,

From his generation, no clear air has climbed the traditional ladder, leaving the future murky on purpose to keep his grip tight, eyes are on the two sessions for clues.
