送鄉人的回憶之旅，以「春、夏、秋、冬」四季主題呈現宋湘的一生。
「春」是敘述宋湘與妻翠花的相遇；「夏」是敘述他上任處理貪官事件；「秋」是敘述當地水患，宋湘冒險奏本，解救災民；「冬」是敘述災情過後的家園重建，與捐款補給人民自立自救的情形。「尾聲」讓宋湘回到故鄉，與包容他一切的妻子翠花相見，雖已天人永隔，但在妻子的包容與諒解之下、學生們的溫暖關懷下，這個送鄉之路，充滿了無限的愛。
