所有才子將詩文呈上，劉翠屏心中，早已選定。於是便將絲鞭，拋與一介窮儒呂蒙正，使在場的公子，一片嘩然，氣憤離去。蒙正不諱言的告訴翠屏，自己一貧如洗，恐無法與翠屏相配。翠屏心中哪在乎夫婿富貴與否!堅定著告訴著蒙正，一定將他帶回，請父親賜婚。一行人回到宰相府，相爺看到呂蒙正的窮困模樣，吩咐家院，拿了錢銀就想打發他走。孰料，翠屏不願違背誓言，執意要嫁，相府堂上，無論夫人如何居中協調，依然擋不住父女爭吵。
