悟空得知八戒個性，早早隨之在後，見八戒睡狀，變化蜜蜂戲弄了八戒，八戒被吵醒了以後，向師父編了一番虛謊，被悟空戳破，唐僧怒責於他。悟空代替八戒，山谷探路，為保周全，在地上畫圈，讓師父暫且圈內歇息，以免妖怪來犯。白骨精自知唐僧肉能讓他得以永生，不必再靠飛禽走獸，便能維持其肉身。但心中顧忌敵不過孫猴子，於是幻化村姑、婦人、老伯三變化的白骨精，欲騙孫悟空，得到唐僧肉，此舉則被孫悟空的火眼金晴所識破。
