員外李文斌等妻子回娘家時，安排與好友方應龍、胡令賢結拜，沒想到連親弟弟李文華也提醒哥哥，要留意朋友名聲不好的傳聞，惹得李文斌十分不悅，憤而趕他回書房。
是日，方應龍與胡令賢趁著結拜名義，對李文斌又是一陣阿諛。
李文斌無感這兩人巧言令色、居心不良，僕人李大一旁看在眼裡，雖替主人著急，卻無計可施，只好私下通報李妻楊氏。 李文斌之妻楊氏，以賢淑聞名鄉里，但見丈夫與方、胡往來之後的轉變，也因聽聞更多方、胡兩人為惡作歹的事情，而憂心不已，打算好好勸諫丈夫遠離小人。
