Woolwich Ferry: Plan Ahead for Maintenance Work

Only one boat will run at a time, so drivers and pedestrians should brace for longer waits to cross the Thames. The work involves removing and replacing the main generator engines on both vessels. Transport for London says this will help avoid unexpected shutdowns and keep the service reliable for years ahead. Last June, they awarded a contract worth 1 million 20 thousand pounds for the new engines and upkeep through 2032. The Ferry's General Manager stresses these upgrades are essential to maintain the free crossing. He urges travelers to plan extra time, check the website before heading out and expect busier nearby routes. Pedestrians dealing with the Lays can switch to the Woolwich Foot Tunnel under the Thames, the Docklands Light Railway from Woolwich Arsenal to King. George V, or the free 129 bus, linking Silver Town and the Royal Docks to Greenwich.
