We got Jason Bonetti coming up here in just over 10 minutes from now. You do not want to miss that special cast alert. Jason Bonetti, the new voice of Sonnet and I baseball on NBC, TV voice of the Detroit Tigers, radio voice for Westwood On Sports on March Bandits, college football as well, joining us in 10 minutes from now. You don't want to miss it. But really quickly Brad, you know, we take a short break here from talking all the brackets we've gone through every region so far. We're going to do so again more in depth tomorrow, more so on Wednesday, give you our final four, give you our national championship picks. We got a trade today in the NFL. The Chiefs, they've got themselves a new backup quarterback. It's Justin Fields. The Chiefs trade a sixth round draft pick next year to the Jets to get Justin Fields who didn't have the
season. He hoped for this year again, green. I thought he was going to be great. I thought he's going to be a big surprise. Turns out I was wrong. The team around him was also terrible. Aaron Glenn was terrible. Their offense coordinator, Tanner Angstrom was terrible. He goes one and done. They bring in Frank Reich to pre the OC and Geno Smith's going to be the quarterback. But now the Chiefs have a legit backup quarterback. You know, I remember when Chad Hennies and Gardner Minchews last year was Chris Holodoken. Chris Holodoken that we had to be subjected to watch play football for the last couple of weeks of the season. It was miserable. So now the Chiefs are going with Justin Fields. On the Jets, by the way, they're going to pay the majority of the $10 million that he has studied. He's owed this year. So this is a nice little win for the Chiefs. And on a larger scale, does this make you worry that my homes might not be ready recovering from the 20 ACL or do you think that this is just a safe insurance plan from KC because that's how I tend to feel about it. Give me option B. I think it's just a safe insurance plan overall. Look, I'm a big
Justin Fields supporter. I felt really bad for him last year. You know, he was in tears and a couple of post game press conferences. He was downtrodden man. He was a beat man with a New York Jets like many people who play for the Jets often have to endure. It just tears you apart emotionally because that team just stinks so bad. And then, you know, I understand where he was really coming from. You know, phenomenally skilled guy on the ground, obviously celestial touch issues with the the offerings of B of the arm, but he is a very viable and a substantial QB2. So yeah, I mean, it's a little bit of insurance policy to say, Lisa, my homes count off that ACL injury. And I think you could really get creative with fields, even when my homes healthy in on the field. And Andy reads like, man, I can plug and play this guy. Maybe play him five, six snaps in a game coming in certain packages when we need, you know, some short yardage and run some really creative sets and schematics as a result because of his duality.
And so I think it's a win-win. And I think Andy Reed is going to step in the laboratory, be a mad scientist with him. And design and create some very interesting plays could be in red zone situations, could be in some of those short yardage situations as well. Justin Fields will be an impact player for Kansas City in moments this upcoming season. Yeah, but we don't know if my homes is going to be ready come week one. He said he he wants to be. He expects to be. He said, I want to be ready for week one. The doctor said I could, but I can't predict what happens throughout the process. That's the goal to play week one and have no restrictions. You want to be out there healthy and give us the best chance to win. I hope to do some things in OTAs and training camp and be able to do things there. I couldn't do the full quote with the Mahomes Kermit, the frog voice. I would have started hacking up along. It wouldn't have been pretty. But look, Justin Fields gets a chance to, you know, maybe rejuvenate his career. Now, let's not, let's not forget. Sam Donald had to go to San Francisco and be brought parties back up for a year. Ultimately, didn't end up getting an opportunity other than like, you know, a week 18 when the, when the,
you know, the meaningless last regular season game. And so you would hope as a chief's man that Justin Fields never sees the field other than that if it's a blow out in favor of the chiefs. But, you know, learning behind Mahomes, learning in an anti-read system. Remember, they brought back Eric Pianneme to be the offense coordinator here. Maybe that could serve Justin Fields well. But yeah, ultimately, I don't think I think the chiefs, they just had to get a different backup quarterback. Minchew goes, you know, elsewhere to Arizona, you couldn't have Chris Oledokin again, be your backup option. Even if you don't think Justin Fields is that good, he's at least better than what the chiefs had in their quarterback room. So you, you have to do this because if Mahomes would have went down again, it's the seasons over. Now, you at least have a capable backup quarterback that you can at least drop some plays, getting them out of the pocket, using his legs, getting them on the run. But again, this, this, this comes down to whether or not Mahomes is going to be ready, week one. Yeah, bottom line. You know, it's again, a soft landing spot and feels to go out there if they need him in a pinch. Maybe start a game or three if necessary to ensure that Mahomes
can be at a hundred percent. I'll quickly, because I know we're about to exercise left. Christian Kirk, one year deal with San Francisco, excellent signing by the Niners. The slot man's got a new home. There you go. Jason Benetti's up back. Are you an adult with uncontrolled moderate-to-severe Crohn's disease symptoms, and still packing a backup bag of clothes?
