Thank you very much for clicking on this video. Happy WBC. Start to those of you that celebrate. Full place started yesterday. I got the ven as well in the Netherlands, Jersey behind me. It's going to be a ton of fun to watch those games, but it's not what we're talking about today. What we're talking about today is the conversation surrounding the Red Sucks number one prospect, Peyton Toley, because right now it feels like it's rotation or bust. In fact, it doesn't even feel like it's rotation or bust for Peyton Toley. It feels like this guy is definitively destined for triple A.

2:03It feels like he's going to be stretched out as a starter, hopefully get some innings in the later part of the year based on performance. But definitely get some innings like he did last year if injuries occur, and that makes some sense. Toley has immense talent and could be a very good pitcher majorly baseball, but he still is a work in progress. The troll has been an issue at the majorly level specifically with his off-speed pitches that are simply not up to par with what his official big offerings are, basically anything outside of his slider. He needs to really build up on that arsenal a little bit to kind of polish things off in triple A before he becomes a regular in the rotation. And I'm not arguing that, but I've had this idea in my head for basically the entirety of the off season at this point that I just simply can't get out, and it has to do with the move the Red Sox could make with Payton toley that might make him a little bit better in the long run and might make the Red Sox a little bit better in the long run as well. So I wanted to break down that idea in today's video, really flush it out and have a conversation with you guys about why I think this makes sense. What I'm talking about today is the idea of the Red Sox temporarily putting Payton toley

3:06in the bullpen for 2026. I'm not talking temporary in terms of like, hey, two months in the bullpen, the rest of the five months or four months or whatever in the rotation here. I'm talking about temporarily in terms of the entire season Payton toley's looked at as a bullpen arm for the Boston Red Sox. Now this concept isn't really anything incredibly new, specifically for toley who last year spent four out of his seven big league appearances in the bullpen. In fact, he was actually a little bit better in the bullpen than he was in the rotation. It was just two earned runs in six innings overall equating to a three ERA. I'm not really going to make that part of my argument in this video mostly because six innings, it's kind of tough to be like, hey, this is why this guy should be in the bullpen. But just something I wanted to point out in terms of, hey, he's done this before. For me, there are two reasons why this would be beneficial for the Red Sox. The first reason is because the fact of the Red Sox, they don't really have a ton of left-handed options out there. We've talked about this a thousand times on this channel, so I'm not going to go too deep into it. But we're a couple of weeks into spring training and it really feels like Giovanni Moran

4:10is at this point a shoe in to be the Red Sox left-handed option. Outside of him, it's basically a role of this Chapman or nothing. Patrick Sandivall is a little bit behind, so he's probably not going to start the year with the Red Sox who will most likely start the year on the I.L. And all of a sudden, those big kind of left-handed options during games are kind of either going to Giovanni Moran or they're going to a role of this Chapman who's supposed to be the closer of this team. The Red Sox have built themselves up a really great amount of rotational depth this season. They've been able to acquire, you know, sunny gray Ranger Suarez, Johan Oviedo, you're getting back cut at Crawford and Patrick Sandivall, this is kind of a perfect opportunity for you to sit there and say, well, how do we make an improvement on the bullpen without really having to go out and pay somebody who's done it before or trade some of our assets to get it done? Well, you could transition one of your younger players like Peyton Toley into that sort of high-leveraged left-handed reliever. And it kind of makes some sense, doesn't it? Peyton Toley is a high-calibre power arm that you could use in big situations.

5:10Number two is what this would allow Peyton Toley to actually do himself at the majorly level, because what this would allow him to do is improve his arsenal, especially his off-speed pitches at the highest level possible. Because of the fact that he's got that sort of unbelievable fastball here, in one or two inning bursts that fastball's going to play a lot, I mean, a lot better, meaning he could start to use his off-speed stuff a bit more, and if he gets into a little bit of a tricky situation here that he has that fastball to lean on to get himself out of it. And the two or three opportunities a week on top of that to keep developing said pitches. The cutter, the curveball, the sinker, the changeup that he's trying to incorporate into his arsenal right, you've got an entire opportunity here during the season to allow him to use those pitches at the majorly level and potentially come out of this season with a dominant arsenal that you can then transition into a starter role going forward. Take his latest spring training relief appearance for a prime example of what I'm talking about here. The training doesn't really count for anything, but what he did is he gave you three innings of one hit ball where he struck out seven guys.

6:13It's the best he's looked this year, and the best he's looked in a little bit, to be honest with you, had seven whiffs on his entire arsenal that's a 37% whiff rate. His entire arsenal was playing up yesterday, and why he was able to do that is because again, he was able to use these off-speed pitches. He only sees batters once or twice, potentially twice, I think, at maximum here, every single game that he's appearing in, and it allows him to keep hitters off balance more than he would be able to as a starter in Major League Baseball right now. So you're talking about, hey, what does this do for the benefit of the Red Sox? It not only gives them a legitimate potential high leverage option in that bullpen, but it also gives them a potential ability to develop one of their best pitching prospects they've had in a very long time at the Major League level without putting too much risk into it. You could even start him off as a medium to low levered reliever and kind of build them into a high levered reliever, because again, you've got a guy like Giovanni Moran that you're expecting to be a medium to higher leverage guy, and you've got a guy like a roll this Chapman who's very clearly the highest level pitcher you probably have in your bullpen.

7:15I sit here with this since like this could be, out of all years, the prime opportunity to do something like this, to be able to push a legitimate big time prospect who's potentially going to be a big time pitcher for you into the bullpen and let them develop here in MLB. But you may be sitting there thinking to yourself, well, Corbin, what does this mean for his development, right? If Payton totally goes into the bullpen, is that going to affect his ability to be a starter at any point in his career? And my answer to that is we got to take a look at some history. And in fact, improve it. If we go back to some successful examples here, there are quite a few. I think specifically with similar kind of prospect to picture-type players over the course of the last 20-ish years. If we start all the way back in the Chicago White Sox who really haven't been doing much successfully lately, but did have two power lefties that became top pictures in Majority Baseball who took a very similar path to what I'm talking about today. The first one back in 2011, Chris sales first season in Majority Baseball wasn't as a Sai Young caliber starter. That came a

9:18year after, but his first year was as a dominant bullpen arm, a 279 ERA and 71 innings with a 312 FIP. Next year's season, again, he transitioned into the rotation. Well, the rest is history, ready to help the Red Sox win a World Series just won a Sai Young a couple of years ago, moved himself into the rotation of the year after that and was a top 10 Sai Young finisher, basically all the way through the rest of his career. Ten years later, the Chicago White Sox did essentially the same thing with another guy who ended up being another stud for the Red Sox. Garrett Crochet back in 2021 started as a reliever where he had a 282 ERA in 54 and a third innings, with a 285 and then kind of used that to transition into the rotation after a year off from an injury. That's two examples. He may be sitting there saying, Corbin, these are two of the best players in baseball over the last 20 years. They're a little bit of a different story. Well, we could look at some other examples too. We've got Christopher Sanchez on the Phillies who just dominated baseball last year, came in second in Sai Young voting. If Paul Schienz didn't exist, he would have won a Sai Young here. His first full season back in 2022, you guessed it, was out of

10:23the bullpen and he wasn't exactly this dominant bullpen reliever. He had a 5.63 ERA over 40 innings. Even if Payton Tully is not the most successful reliever we've ever seen here, having that experience in Majority Baseball is clearly still beneficial in some of these cases. Even smaller examples like Seth Lugo, who's made himself a home over there in Kansas City because of his transition into the rotation, or a guy like Michael King who just signed a three year 75 million dollar deal with the Padres after he spent a couple of years in the bullpen just to come out of it and be really, really solid every day pitcher for the for the San Diego Padres coming into free agency. I think specifically when we're looking at these examples, the two that are going to stand out to Red Sox fans mostly because they're Red Sox players, but also because they're similar players to Payton Tully, are Garakrochet and Chris Sale. Both of these guys were top prospects at the time. Both of these guys were players with nasty fastballs and wipe out sliders who hadn't fully developed their full arsenal and coming into Majority Baseball and were able to develop themselves

11:24as a big league starter in a bullpen. Not to mention, we're sitting here talking about this. It's like worst case scenario you put Payton Tully in the bullpen and he develops into this absolutely dominant reliever who can only really have two pitches where it's his fastball in his slider, but still in one inning burst all of a sudden he's one of the best closures in the league, right? That's kind of worst case scenario with putting Payton Tully in the bullpen. I just sit here between the examples and between what this could do for the Red Sox and Tully and I can't get this idea out of my head. Now there are a couple of things that I think are going to hold the Red Sox back from doing exactly what we're talking about in this video. In fact, I think it's three things specifically. The first one is service time manipulation, right? It's a part of the game, and the Red Sox can take advantage of it. Every team in baseball is going to take advantage of it. It's tough to make the argument that hey, this guy who could potentially develop into a front of the rotation type starter for you. Yeah, we're going to waste a year of his control, developing him as a bullpen arm when you could just simply keep him in AAA for, I mean, even 45 days down there gives you that extra year of control. I'd imagine if he's going to be in AAA to start

12:28the year, it's going to be longer than 45 total days down in AAA, but like you can sit here and it's really difficult for me to make the argument that he should be your opening day, you know, high leverage reliever when you have the ability to hold him for 45 days. And instead of having a starter through 2031 with a bullpen year, you've got a full, you know, five or six years coming out at 30, 2032 with a legitimate potential starter for you, right? And I think that's a really tough argument for me to argue against. The second thing is that the Red Sox have a set plan for these guys, right? It's very clear since the beginning that they've had a set plan for each and every one of their top pitching prospects. And to be honest with you, it's tough to argue with said plan because what they're doing right now is essentially creating a pitching mecca in their minor league system, right? You take a look at their new top 10 prospects on MLB pipeline and there's a whole lot of pitching talent there, mostly pitching talent. So they clearly have a way that they are going about developing these guys that's working. And by doing this, you are kind of going against status quo. Now the third reason I think that this might be a little bit difficult for the Red

13:31Sox to do and ultimately achieve would be the idea of kind of shortening that rotational depth a little bit, right? It's going to be kind of difficult if you put Payton Tully into a bullpen roll for let's say two or three months into the season. And then all of a sudden, you're two or three injuries into the rotation and you need him to start opening games for you. It's going to be tough for you to be like, okay, now go do four, five, six innings, right? If you're going to do this, you're going to have to commit to it and it's going to have to be as a bullpen roll for the entirety of 2025. It's going to be really hard for the Red Sox to kind of concede his 2026 season just simply for, you know, the ability to develop him for 2027, especially with how many injuries the Red Sox had last year. And to be honest, we the Red Sox haven't been unbelievably successful with this in the past, right? We've given examples of guys who have been successful doing this, but none of them are Red Sox players or at least at the time they weren't Red Sox players. We've seen it before where the Red Sox have kind of struggled with this. Tanner Hauke, I think, was relatively successful, but he was kind of rotation then bullpen then rotation. Cutter Crawford was

14:32okay, right? But we haven't had that. He's in the bullpen for one year now. He's a side young candidate type starter. I think kind of ever, at least in my lifetime, for the Red Sox, maybe a guy like Lester did it, but I don't think so. I don't think Buck Holtz was in that conversation either. So I think there are more kind of bad recent, recent sea bias kind of stuff with Red Sox fans when they sit here and talk about this, but ultimately at the end of the day, I just can't get this out of my head for a couple of reasons. I do think it makes the Red Sox bullpen, which is a bit of a mystery right now, significantly more talented and with a higher ceiling than you would normally have coming into the year. I think it could be really beneficial for paying Toli's development, especially if you're talking about kind of continuing to develop that arsenal. And I do think that this could end up leading to him being a better pitcher in the long run at the big league level. I just, I don't know that the Red Sox are going to do it.
