Who Wrote Hebrews? The Bible's Greatest Cold Case
About this episode
Who wrote the Epistle to the Hebrews? The author never identifies himself—yet the letter leaves behind a compelling trail of internal clues, manuscript evidence, and early-church testimony. 📜
In this episode of the Cold-Case Christianity Podcast, J. Warner Wallace investigates one of the New Testament's greatest authorship mysteries. Was Hebrews written by Paul? Did Luke translate or compose the letter? Is Barnabas the strongest independent candidate? What roles might Clement of Rome or Silas have played?
We examine the evidence found inside Hebrews itself: its anonymous opening, highly refined Greek, connection to Timothy, pre-AD 70 temple references, and its description as a "word of exhortation." We then follow the historical chain of custody through Papyrus , Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Tertullian, Eusebius, Jerome, and Augustine.
The case has no signed confession—but the evidence points toward the apostolic circle and a letter shaped by Pauline theology, possibly written in the extraordinary Greek of a trusted coworker. 🔍✝️
