The list to replace Bobby Hurley. It's it's a long one. You've got Derek Glasser. You've
got Greg Popovich. You've got Anthony Tohtree and you've got, oh, that's that's about
it. That's the list. Yeah, happy Thursday and welcome into the P.H. and X. The Sun Devil
show. I'm Anthony Tohtree. Join as always by let's say Larry, we get the freckled mom
button. I was thinking the Mac making all of the magic happen. Jacob and Russell here in
the chat. Make sure you hit that like button. You hit the subscribe button and you drop
a five star review wherever you get your podcasts less than 24 hours after Arizona
States exit from the big 12 tournament. Bobby Hurley out at Arizona State, the emergency
pod from yesterday and the search is on for a new head coach for the Arizona State Sun
Devils. Rubis, we're going to get a little bit deeper into that short list that you mentioned
in the cold open. Despite reports, Anthony Tohtree is not involved in the short list for
the, I mean, I'm short, but not on that short list specifically to be the next head coach
for Arizona State hoops. It's unfortunate. I'm just going to get ahead of it now. You
know, they didn't come at me with the right number. It was, you know, what is I was interested
in the job that the figure just wasn't it? You know, I'm not going to get any specifics.
Okay. But just just know, maybe I'll throw it into that hard discord. We got Sharon
in here as well. How soon till we make a higher do you think? I would expect a new head
coach potentially by the end of next week. Because again, you only have a limited amount
of time before that transfer portal window opens. Of course, that is early April. So you
are going to need to fill this position well before then. Sharon, I would also say to
you specifically stick around. Yes, stick around to the entire. I will also say this.
If you want to know exactly when the next Arizona State head coach is going to be hired,
it's going to be the most inconvenient time for the two of us. Yeah, for sure. It's
going to be like for sure. In the middle of the most important thing of our lives, it
would look at our phone and be like, yeah, yeah. But yeah, man, I mean, I'm just I'm glad
that that we were now taking steps in that direction. We are, we are. And I want to take
a step back before we take another step forward. If that's okay with you, you know what,
one last time is one last time. One last time. One last time because again, we had the emergency
pod and it was a lot more based around like, okay, what's next for the program? You know,
all that fun stuff. And I think a lot of a lot of the stuff yesterday was tough because
of the loss to Iowa State, the way that you did it and the moment that you did it and
how quickly everything transpired after that. Bobby Hurley yesterday did post this on social
media kind of a goodbye post. It reads, quote, as this chapter comes to a close, I want
to express my appreciation to Dr. Crow and the Board of Regents for giving me the opportunity
to coach at Arizona State over our 11 years together, we navigated unprecedented time
from the pandemic and the evolving NIL landscape and college athletics to massive conference
realignment throughout this journey. My family and I formed lasting friendships and created
incredible memories. We experienced a multiple NCAA tournament appearances, remarkable wins
at DFA and the joy of watching our children become sun devil alumni. It's all the players.
Thank you. It has been my greatest privilege to coach so many outstanding young men and
I will always treasure our time together to all the staff, former and present. It has been
an honor to compete at the highest level alongside you to the sun devil fans. I'm grateful
for your support and the way you embraced our program. The role I stepped into as a
Pac 12 head coach in 2015 is very different from the one I'm leaving today. I'm proud
of what we achieved and confident this program is in a stronger place now than when I arrived.
I'm as energized as ever and excited for the future. Bobby, you know, it's nice about
that. It doesn't sound like it was written by Chad GPT. No, like that's like it sounds
I think there was a little bit of a troll job kind of throughout some of it. Yeah, yeah,
for I mean, yes, for sure, 100%, but is this a safe space? It's safe space. I'm so tired
to talk about Bobby. I really do. I'm like, I'm the Popeyes employee afterwards. I'm
SpongeBob, like ex hailing. You're done. Yeah, I'm so tired to talk about Bobby Hurley, but
I'm room for him going forward. Man, it was a nice message. It was just it was time to
move on for both sides. I hope he finds a place to go. He will clearly wants to keep coaching.
He's clearly not like an outright negative to a basketball program. It just it didn't
make sense here any longer and it was the right decision to move on. I thought that was
a nice goodbye. I would say I don't think he had to do it, but I think if you're going
to try to continue to 11 years, if you try to continue on coach and be around ending
on the best terms, possible is pretty important. Yeah. And I don't think anything about it
was negative, right? I don't think at any point do I read that and I look and say he's
doing this to say face or he's doing like again, it's not just like this to you. It feels
like a genuine goodbye. This felt like him trying to close a book that's been open for
11 years with, you know, the highs that he mentioned, some of the lows in there as well
and saying goodbye. I think you could kind of pick apart some of the pieces, right? He
said, goodbye to Dr. Crowe. He didn't say goodbye to Grandma. Well, Grandma, she didn't
hire him. No, but still, right? If you're working with that individual for more. Yeah.
That's something that again, Grandma's is boss, right? So I think for him to leave that
out is interesting. Of course, Graham being a big part of the decision making here, right?
Ultimately. Yeah. I mean, I hear you, but Graham, Graham, I'm not trying to put this
all on on any one way, right? I'm just again, like, this is what the statement was. I think
it's kind of interesting that he opted to leave that out, right? No Ray Anderson mentioned.
No Ray Anderson mentioned. Thank God. And to Ray Anderson, a genuine, dear friend, genuine
goodbye from Bob here. And that was a lot of sentiment on social media yesterday. I think
there were a lot of folks reaching pretty deep into their early experience bag of like,
like, hey, the early experience, the early, yeah, early experience bag. You never know
what you're going to get. Sometimes I wanted to hurl in my early experience. Like, you
had some really cool moments, some cool stories and fans out there. And you know, as much
as there were issues, I think on the court, I think everyone is an agreeance that Bobby
Hurley, the person was awesome. He was a great part of this program for such a long period
of time. But at the end of the day, it was the right decision. Like you said earlier,
it's it was something that was needed to happen. These these two, these two entities, as
humans, basketball, Bobby Hurley, they needed to go their separate ways. And I think over
time, Bobby Hurley will be remembered well as an Arizona State Sunday. Yeah. I, I think
everybody will agree, even on ASU fans that the highs of the Bobby Hurley era were so insanely.
Yeah. Highs in this program would have never reached the the memories. If you just bottled
up the top 10 best moments in wins in Bobby Hurley's history, you think that he, the
the batteries, the greatest coach in in in college basketball history. Like the, the, the miracle
McCale is not one that we brought up yesterday. All the wins over cans. I watched that one with
Damon Dogg, by the way. Yeah. I know because he was producing that show. That was great.
Speaking of Sergio in here, your team is literally playing in the big 12 tournament. And you're on
here just, you're, you're talking to us. Thanks for the view. He's not talking to us. He's talking
to himself. Yeah. He's trying to explain. It's just like, oh my God. Watch like I get it. Like
yeah, nothing else going on when our show is on usually during the day. You guys are literally
playing in the big 12 tournament right now. Yeah. Literally. Yeah. And you're like, let me check
it and see what the ASU guys have to talk about. Nobody here can, I mean, good, good for us. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We had half buddy. Watch the half time show. Don't like, don't like,
but don't buddy me pal. Okay. Sergio, how do you think the overtime son of fans are going to
remember Bob? And I know you don't want to talk about Bob anymore. But I just want to put the
final stamp. I think I think I don't stamp on Bob's career at Arizona State. It'll be much more
positive than how they felt about him right now, because I think now that like you've moved on
and these last couple of years, we'll kind of go to the wayside and hopefully the program does get
better. This is kind of a hopefully launching point. What do you, what do you remember in sports,
right? You remember the big fun moments, like as a son's fan, right? The down sons years,
like I, I don't remember every single loss that they had. I remember the overall feeling, but
I remember Devin Booker scoring 70 points, right? I remember them beating the Golden State Warriors
when they were a dynasty and then the sun sucked, right? People will remember Bobby Hurley for
the big moments that he brought. And then somebody will ask, well, why was it time to move on? And
then you kind of give the context, but overall, I think he will be remembered relatively fondly.
Um, and if the next coaching higher doesn't yield success, or if the program doesn't get better,
then that will only help how he's remembered. Yeah. The Green Eminem in the chat, I'll remember him
is someone who cared. Yeah. 1000%. That's that's something that you definitely have to throw in
their Bobby Hurley was certainly somebody who cared. And we've talked a lot about Bob over the last
several weeks, several months, I mean, several hours, several days, right? So I think it's
fitting that we pretty quickly move on from the Bobby Hurley conversation. I'm sure with the next
time we talk about Bobby Hurley, it'll be about, you know, Bob getting a job somewhere else and
what he could do to potentially spark that program. We wish Bob the absolute best. Somebody that
at one point in time was on the show a couple of separate times. We already never came home when I
was here. Yeah. Again, something about you, something about you specifically, Eric, that he just,
you know, rubbed him the wrong way. Yeah, probably a lot of things, probably hours worth of things.
But, you know, that's neither here nor there. Bob's not here anymore and you are. So you won.
Congratulations. He's got a couple more years on me than 10 years. So I got a long ways to go.
The big question now is who and what is next for Arizona State men's basketball,
Graham Rossini actually spoke earlier today with Braden Bell of Sun Devil Athletics kind of
diving into what's ahead for the position in really the interest in the job for Sun Devil men's
basketball. It's something that we're going to let you guys here. We're going to discuss some
names also that we've heard kind of related to that search. But before we do all of that,
we are going to take our first look. There are needs in life and there are wants. Everybody needs
a checking account. Literally, everybody in this room, they need a checking account. And we all

Be like Sharon. Yeah, I mean, if everybody in the chat was like Sharon, it'd be a lot better.
It would be it absolutely or disrespectfully. Some of you disrespectfully. Oh my goodness,
again, hit that like button, hit the subscribe button, drop a five star review wherever you get your
podcasts. Like I said before the break, we're going to get into a couple of names that have been
tossed around potentially to replace Bobby Hurley as the next men's basketball coach at Arizona
state. But I want to give you guys the opportunity to hear what Graham Rossini had to say earlier
today in terms of the interest around the Arizona state head coaching job. Yeah. In the last,
I don't know, 12 hours, maybe, maybe less than that since the news came out,
I've had a lot of people reach out. And that's a really good indicator that people see
as she was a destination job in basketball. And you know, it seems like in this particular cycle
of the off season, there's not a lot of jobs open yet. There may not be a lot of jobs coming open.
And so that puts us in a really strong position in terms of being open-minded and really developing
a very strong candidate pool and looking at what's the right fit for us at a university level,
what's the right fit for us as we compete and understand the big 12 much more clearly as we
wrapped up our second season. In the fact that we've got momentum across all levels of the department,
I think that's what's really the most exciting for me at this moment as we open up the position
is that we have incredible momentum, not only at ASU, but also certainly within athletics with
a lot of our sports competing with us really generating a lot of support across the fan base
and our corporate partner community and our donors as well that we're going to be an attractive
position for a lot of people that are looking for a move into the big 12. Easily the best basketball
conference in America, we've solidified that by reputation now and it's just it's such a fun
style of basketball to be a part of both on the men's and women's side and so you're really in
the last you know less than 24 hours just since the job has officially opened up a lot of interest
from all walks of the sport. You've got successful head coaches, you've got ready assistants,
you've got people with NBA backgrounds that have all found their different ways to make it known
that hey if you want to consider me I'd love to be on the list and and so right out the gate,
very strong candidate pool starting to develop and you know part of the jobs that we're in you're
always anticipating scenarios so there's always a list there's always a working list of if somebody
left if we had to make a change who are some names in the sport that we're interested in and so
naturally we've been keeping tabs on a certain certain group of coaches at at various levels of
the sport and so you know now that the job's open we have a chance to engage and really consider
who's the best fit. Experience Ted coaches, folks with NBA backgrounds and capable assistant coaches.
Jock Vaughan going Frank Vogel in a like
multi-Williams. Oh my god all three of them all three of them
three headguards and just like no absolutely not. Honestly Monty Williams is an interesting
name and I know it's not like somebody that this is where we're going. Wow I didn't expect I didn't
expect Eric to take it the Monty Williams draft. Yeah okay the Ruby five starts with Monty
Williams. No okay uh Monty Williams. Monty Williams is not I mean he's not going to be the
next head coach Eric's the same as basketball but he's got a kid who's really good Elijah Williams.
He obviously is is aware locally here and he has had coaching experience and it almost kind of
feels like he would be a better coach coach. I love Monty Williams. Yeah I don't know if he'd
want to navigate the NIL stuff but that'd be fun. That would be a lot of. Sorry I got completely
signed track. You completely. I'll give you the rest of the Eric five over the next four to five
when the job is going to be well before they just start dropping candidates after yeah that
would be though. Yeah I'm hearing that the next level as head coach is the guy they hired out of all
of those. It's all of those options the three there. If you could pick one one with head coaching
experience like former head coach a up-and-coming assistant or NBA background. What is most crucial
for for you if you're making the higher for the next position NBA background is third it's cut
it's how any particular reason why completely different game okay I get nice right but like the
the pipeline to the NBA that first of all the pipeline of the NFL stuff we saw how that worked
and you and see right for Bill Belichap and they just sucked it's just it's just not something that
like you you sit there and you're like hey we're gonna put you in the NBA like yeah you've got
Lou doorky you got James Harden you got Zion she didn't wear a cup of coffee in the NBA like that
that's what you had ever did he didn't even have a cup of coffee did he did he did wasn't even a
cup of coffee it was it was like a shot of he had like two bites of a scone and he had a shot of
a espresso and a scone yeah obviously like Eddie house and like you you have you have guys that have
made it to the NBA but you're not like an NBA factory hiring somebody with NBA experience to me
it doesn't matter because NIL college basketball is such a different game then you're probably not
even getting NBA level players it's completely different coaching as well like it's a it's a totally
different game of what's going on in college or what's going on in the NBA Bobby early juniors
a good call um I think to me you would obviously say that you want a head coach you want somebody
with head coaching experience okay if you're hiring somebody to host the podcast
realistically you'll look at people who host the podcast and have hosted one before than not
not to say that the best hire might be somebody who's just been you know a producer I'm just
you saying yeah I never hosted a podcast well right but it's like yeah I'm not saying that that's
not possible right like up and coming assistant coaches great and they might be the right there that
was you're equating me too as I was an up and coming assistant coach yeah I was also drawing
the parallel to myself too so I guess it kind of works for both of us uh look at look at us now
hey huge uh but I think for me I you always want a head coaching experience but the most
important thing is not any of those things to me it's complete and total buy into into like this
basketball program because when you go with some older guys or some guys that had coaching
experience if somebody's using this as a stepping stone right like if Kenny Dillingham was using
this football program as a stepping stone he could have done all the stuff he'd done over the
last couple of years than he'd be out of here you'd be like okay where are we now yeah right I want
somebody to come in here who's committed to being here and rebuilding this program and loves this
program whether that's a head coach somewhere else and assistant coach somewhere else
it's fine with me as long as they have some experience right and they have a game plan that
to me is is the most important thing well let's talk about somebody whose name has been float around
a lot by the fan base uh when it comes to potentially the replacement for Bobby Hurley and that is
Randy Bennett uh currently the head coach for Saint Mary's College uh he has been now for I want to
say 25 plus seasons um he has been at Saint Mary's College for quite some time he does have ties here
in the valley originally from Mesa Arizona um outside of that like he's got the head coaching
experience he's built up a program he's been there a long time he's got the ties to Arizona
the only thing for me here that I have an issue I guess there's a couple things
A he 63 years old yeah which I don't want to be Aegis but like it sounds like you want to be in
today's day and age of college sports you are seeing a trend where programs are are going in the
opposite direction they're trying to get younger or not older right Arizona state specifically
the last couple hires have been younger not older coaches yeah right they have opted for the youth
the youth movement uh coaches that players can relate to you know coaches that are really
needy in the NIL game right not to say that Randy Bennett isn't that guy but based off of how long
he's been in the sport it's it's it's been some time yeah right and again what do you leave
what do you leave a job that he's been at for 25 years like to come be here I think if you're
gonna go with somebody of this ilk right but talking specifically about Randy Bennett I would
really like it if it came with a high level up and coming assistant coach that's gonna be the
high coach and waiting yeah because I don't think that would create as awkward as a dynamic if
this is like Randy Bennett's like next school right where it's like okay well you look at like a
Creighton right and they have a coach and waiting or you looked at if we're going back to football Kyle
Whittingham in Utah having a coach and waiting it's like well this is like your baby right you
don't really want to give up the baby to the coach waiting but coming to Arizona state with let's
say maybe somebody we'll talk about later in the show with the idea of I'm gonna help get this
program back to like of being afloat yeah right I'm gonna bring my experience I'm gonna bring my
stability I'm gonna take you under my wing and show you how I do things on this and maybe you
as the the bright assistant coach you handle NIL stuff a little bit more you kind of dip your
toe more into recruiting right maybe you're gonna call place for some of the games and run some
of the timeouts but I'm gonna be there for the next say three to four years until the renovations
are complete for DFA and you're feeling good about where this program is and then I'm gonna retire
right I do think that that's a little bit of a tough thing where it's like if you are gonna come
here come back home or is your heart still going to be in it's still is it like I get home exactly
grew up but again it's been how long he's 63 he's been at this job for 20 something years I mean
like as far as like maybe as like a human with life like you grew up here from here like that's
home you come home but as far as like basketball goes like probably not yeah right and so if if
there's a commitment to figuring out like what the future of the program is going to be that's
fine and maybe maybe the rationale if you're grammar senior about the future of the program is let's
just just get back to realize stabilize like not even relevancy let's just like let's become a
competitive big 12 team yeah let's be UCF right and I get it like right now maybe a tough time to
talk about UCF but they had a good season yeah this year right let's be a TCU right you could
be ranked a little bit you could be a good team in the tournament right like let's let's go do
that and then maybe in three to four years Randy Bennett retires and then okay we open this up
again and we hire somebody else right maybe but is that something you really want to do I don't
think it's what you want to do but I think it's certainly an option I think my preferred option is
have somebody come with him under his wing who's like it's basically like announced that this is
the coach and waiting yeah and maybe it's the guy that we talk about next I don't think it'd be
bad to hire Randy Bennett I think you could certainly sell it but how many times have we seen a really
good coach coach for a really long time at one place and then leave to go somewhere else to fix it
and then it doesn't work out whether it's basketball whether it's football it it usually doesn't go
the way that you would expect to do it can you name me can you tell me one time that a long time
10 year coach near the brink of retirement has left their the place that they have made a name
and they've gone and they've done better because I can think of one and he's currently coaching in
the SEC I mean I think Kyle winning him might be a good one we'll see we'll see John Calipari yeah
is is really the only guy that I can think of that like win and like oh wow he's not done yet like
you you still got most of the time it ends up like a bell check yeah right or if you're going
like the NBA since the check was tough though because it was like you went from the NFL to
no and I get it but like or you're like in the NBA it's like Mike Boone was yeah right like a lot
of times like her medwards but you know he wasn't coaching a bad coach in the NFL yeah it's just it
it's a tough thing to see going perfectly in the way that you would like to envision it but
it's not a bad choice no it's not a bad choice especially when you look at what Randy Bennett has
again been doing at St. Mary's College for the last 20 something years right he got that first job
or he got that job in 2001 so he's had it for again quite some time in I mean St. Mary's College
has been a dominant program in the WCC they're 27 and 5 this year they got up to the number 21
team in the country the last four years prior to that they had been an NCAA tournament team a
seven seed three straight years of being a five seed you know on the brink of 30 wins a couple
times like they have been a really successful program under Randy Bennett now again the WCC
compared to what the big 12 is as a juggernaut is a completely different thing to navigate
so I would say Randy Bennett is somebody that I I personally wouldn't put money on to be the
next head coach again things change so quickly when it comes to some of these searches names go in
they go out and again there's still a lot to be decided here but I would be very very surprised
if Grammar senior opted to hire somebody at 63 years old to come lead this program following
you know the hires of like a Molly Miller or you know seeing the success around ASU athletics
with kind of a youth movement for so for that reason I would say I don't think Randy Bennett will
be the guy also you have the tow tree five not not on the tow tree five no not not whatsoever but there
are two other names that are really starting to heat up around this search and we're going to talk
a lot more about on the other side of our second do you like watching TV I love it I mean who

sun's watch party on the 19th sunspurs come watch a sun's basketball with us just that
other let in there go some fun yeah do it do the thing watch a current a next ASU head coach is
former team in the Phoenix Suns yeah exactly I got there eventually we just congratulate
Monty on the job we should make a breaking graph yeah okay so the towtree five the towtree five
is Monty Williams yes okay not Randy best is this the five that I want Greg pop of it yeah
let's just go bell check in there I don't want I don't want John Calipari pop I don't want
pop and Derek Glasser Derek Glasser is in that list okay Derek Glasser somebody
so Derek Glasser pop of itch Belichick Calipari on Tommy Lloyd no keep that man away from
our program yeah no Derek Glasser is is an interesting prospect here it's somebody that we
talked about yesterday it's a name that we've been kind of floating around in the diehard discord
now for for over a week even while Bobby had the job it's a name that has certainly popped up
a number of times as of yesterday afternoon Derek Glasser it's still not interviewed with
Gram Rossini despite kind of you know his name being floated around my knowledge nobody has
actually sat down in a room and interviewed for this job with Gram Rossini quite yet
they're waiting he went on he did that that whole clip that we had played was about a 15 minute
video kind of talking about the job they hired a search firm all that type of stuff and again I
would expect this to be a rather quick process I would also expect despite a report that was put
out there and has since been deleted that Derek Glasser is a candidate for this position
one thousand percent somebody that brings the alumni tag as an Arizona State Sun Devil somebody
that played with James Harden in tempi currently an assistant coach at UC Santa Barbara the biggest
thing here I guess there are a couple big things eight and have any head coaching experience at a
high level right he's an assistant at UC Santa Barbara I want to say before that he was an assistant
at rice as well yes so not a ton of coaching experience like just just overall here but somebody
that wants a job somebody that brings that alumni tag so I think you could reenergize a lot of
fan base the big thing here is he's got a financial plan in place to kind of elevate the state
of Arizona States NIL game and a big piece of that is bringing in James Harden to this program
yeah bringing him in in a big way financially we're talking multi millions of dollar commitments
per year on an annual basis funded straight into Arizona State men's basketball high school
teammates and teammates at Arizona State and look okay so he doesn't have head coaching experience
and I get that but if you go to this coaching page at UC Santa Barbara let me just tell you some
of the things that are his responsibility okay uh he's been a key role of one of the most successful
stretches of program history UC Santa Barbara was the 2023 big west regular season and tournament
champions uh he oversees scouting and game planning for an offense that ranked among the nation's top
80 well mentoring standart guards such as AJ Mitchell who is the big west player of the year and for
all big west selections AJ Mitchell by the way a key piece to the thunder team alongside
ludorf this year and under his guidance at least one gaucho guard has earned all big west
recognition recognition each season so he primarily works with the guards and his guards are always
good guard you guard you he also manages scheduling responsibilities assists with NIL fundraising
events and maintains strong relationships with boosters and alumni and academically the gaucho's
core player group post a 3.45 GPA over a two year span under his leadership he also did a lot
of the same stuff at rice including a lot of recruiting and coaching guards including uh
a conference USA newcomer of the year Travis Eevee and all conference selection Carl Pierre
who contributed to rice's first stretch of three consecutive 15 win seasons uh in 2006 like
this since 2006 this is a guy that has had a lot of success in his roles he's also coaching
developed you want to talk about MBA five MBA players okay tray Murphy the third
who is really good yeah Drew Peterson Quincy Olivari Miles Norris and AJ Mitchell so you got two
guys in in AJ Mitchell and and tray Murphy the third who are legitimate NBA players at UC Santa
Barbara yeah right and so this is a guy that has played at a high level himself as he's all time
assisted leader yeah recognize and and he's a he's a good coach is he a head coach he hasn't been
but you want to know who else wasn't a head coach can he doing it right but again very very different
it's very different it's very different because Kenny was an assistant at an organ right which is not
what he's an organ it's not like he went from rice to organ to ASU yeah right he was like it was a lot
went all over from Memphis to Auburn their last years less experience than Kenny Dylan yeah but he's
also played the game at a high level and usually point guards like yes this is ironic here point guards
usually have a pretty good translation as well i.e. Bobby Hurley so when you when you when you have a guy
that has this upside reality is he's not going to demand as much money and I'm sure that money is
also a big part of this he's going to bring a lot of money yeah and with how much everything's
changing within iL and whatnot like having somebody who's on top of it and ahead of it is very
very important and look bringing in a couple million dollars from James Harden is going to fix everything
it's gonna help it's gonna help for sure right and so it would also be a lot easier of a self like
let's say I had his at his press conference like James Harden is there yeah right which I would fully
expect if if he gets a job James Harden to be there and I also like like I said earlier Derek was
kind of the guy that I was thinking about when it's like are you gonna maybe you hire somebody
with head coaching experience and then you pay glassers like the highest paid assistant coach in
the big 12 or something right and you're like you were bringing them in or paying paying them a lot
of money you're going to be the head coach here before 2030 like this is your job but what you're
going to do now is you're gonna do an iL you're gonna basically be like the the associate head coach
you're gonna do an iL you're gonna coach all this stuff and we're gonna have somebody who's just
done this before to kind of show you the ropes a little bit about doing this at a big 12 level
because that's a big jump assistant coach UC Santa Barbara to head coach and one of the best
basketball conferences in the entire world tough jump we'll have somebody here with you that's
a hold your hand but just to guide you for a couple of years DFA will get finished and renovated
and then boom here you are as a head coach and it's it's an ideal scenario in my head in reality
it's probably not oh i was gonna say don't you see that might be a little bit of a problem right
depending on who you would bring in let's say you do ultimately say glasser you're you know
first man off the bench in terms of like you are the assistant coach that we have here you're the
head coach and waiting yeah you're not an assistant coach but you're not gonna be that your head
coach and then hire a head coach and waiting no but i think that's why when you talk about something
like Randy Bennett which again i know that i'm just like hypothetically somebody like he's going
to retire soon yeah so the idea is come here for your last couple of years we'll send you out
with a nice contract you live in a gray place you want to do as much work because glasser will be
here he'll also be heftyly paid for his position and then you're gonna retire in a couple years
and he's gonna take off that's just feels like and i see i see it i see the vision that's not
gonna i see the path but i i just think it's an expensive vision right to be able to hire somebody
of Randy better James are in the money you're right but i don't know if James Harden would bring the
money if if glasser is just an assistant it's fair right like i know they're going to want
that money but you're you're only getting it in my mind to that extent if glasser is the head coach
right and i could be wrong things change um i haven't seen much discussion or heard much discussion
i should say about Derek glasser coming to Arizona state as an assistant more so being a candidate
legitimately uh for this job and again like i think a big piece of this pie too is like in terms of
the n-i-l money that Arizona state is going to be investing rev share etc from donors
into the overall men's basketball program i would say it's around the four million dollar range
which we had a discussion yesterday right how much do you need to be a middle of the pack team in
n-i-l between eight and ten million dollars yeah right so four million dollars is not simply enough
to compete at a high level in this conference especially with Arizona Houston Iowa state
Kansas the list goes on and on four million plus two million that James brings on an annual basis
plus he's gonna have to fundraise right the guy that you have in this position is going to have
to be able to sell Arizona state basketball the big wigs the donors to alumni right maybe like
it's a 63 year old Randy Bennett gonna be able to do that is he gonna want to do that at this
stage in his career probably not right so that makes me think again you need somebody young
what sells Arizona state better than anything somebody that's been at Arizona state somebody that
is a record holder you know in sun devil men's basketball i think it would be very easy
for and and maybe i'm i'm i'm simplifying it too much i think it would be very easy for Derek
Glasser to come in here and potentially double ASU's n-i-l investment into the program just
based off of revshare and all that other stuff around the four million dollar range right around
that not saying it's exact but around that range if you went in with eight million dollars every
single season to go build a roster that puts you middle of the pack that puts you in somewhat
of a competitive range with some of these other teams and again that's just to get players here
what you do with them on the court remains to be seen yeah and again i think if you're going to
hire somebody like Derek Glasser there needs to be a great staff around him that's really important
it can't just there's there probably needs to be some sort of and there are already folks that are
willing to leave jobs to come with Derek Glasser Arizona state did you know that Derek Glasser's
dad Michael Glasser is worth anywhere from 26 to 130 million dollars started a gene company didn't
yeah he's got money he's got money yeah so i would be hard pressed to imagine that there's no
money coming from but he's not a candidate senior he's not a candidate right but he's got all the
money to back him right that's right i'm as much as money is important it's it's it's not just
important it is everything in this job it is one thousand why did bobby early aside from like
on the court shit not succeeded airs on a state what does everybody say they didn't have the
financial support i don't even know bobby's like we're competitive let's like with somebody say
you're competitive you're probably not you're not right what does four million dollars do like what
you want to be applying for a job and they listen to they list the salary range as competitive
you're getting it's bf you're getting your rob right yeah so like yeah a few years ago money was a
big part like also i also don't want it to be like i don't want to completely discount Derek Glasser
like someone who could be a good coach i'm not saying i think this i think like you hear like
the money is his advantage more than anybody else and it absolutely does for sure right if you say
i got these guys behind me but it also like hey man like he's been an assistant coach for a little
bit of time now and he's coached some very successful teams relative to where they are in their
conferences and some very successful players it's also like at this point like what do you have to
lose is it going to is he going to blame you for for picking up no it is going to say alumni
no who's the all-time assistant leader absolutely no it might be surprising some people first but like
you think it's going to be a hard soul it's the only thing that people are going to say is he
hasn't been a head coach and then if he's good in the first couple of years always going to care
anymore no and if he's not good then you're like okay well we took a shot at an alumni who brought
in a ton of money yeah like it's not like they're i i look at it and again unless he's like bombs
his interviews like i have a tough time again and that's like it i brought a hot if i brought
eight million dollars with me they wouldn't hire me and think about it like this when we talk about
Kenny dealing him a football and i get it's completely different but the one thing that we all
think around Kenny is like hey he wants to be here right he's he's not gonna like eventually yeah
he'll only want to be eventually he'll leave right but he's a sun devil will he really knows it
maybe at one time maybe right but he's an Arizona state sun devil when things get really really
really good in college athletics what happens people say okay thanks i loved chilling on this floor
this staircase i'm gonna go take another one yeah i mean think about some of the other names that
are involved in this coaching server there it's like hey like this would just be a stepping stone
for a lot of folks it would be that wouldn't be this would be a classic for dare glass that wouldn't
be the case with dare glass turn again there's still a lot to discuss here there's still one other
name that i do want to throw around in this discussion it's a fascinating discussion to have at this
point in time let us know who you guys are hoping is the next Arizona statements basketball coach
still plenty more of the pH pH next son of a show on the other side of our final break i don't

okay thanks for leaving the five star review thank you for doing that we really appreciate it huge
we paused by the way you could have just said pause it and then you could have carried on yeah
if i want to make sure i gave them time to pause and then if they didn't pause i wanted them to
feel a little bad about it hmm be like oh i should i should have paused yeah here you get one more
chance do you think they rewinded maybe you know i bought this okay if you didn't leave a five star
review the first time yeah now's your second chance okay okay you didn't say pause pause you okay
start over because you didn't say but this is your third chance pause okay we're good we're good
yeah we're good if you thank you so much for the person who was reluctant at first and then
decided to do it your real one and then for those who didn't decide to do it what are we doing
so what are we doing pause okay we're back so the final candidate right i don't want to talk about
today we've talked about Randy Bennett we've talked about Derek Glasser it's okay it's i get it
you had a long day you're having a long day Eric Olan good name great name awesome name at all
concerned that there's only eight letters in the name i guess no because you also have eight
letters in your name it makes it better yeah now there is a little concern spells it with a C
which is like yeah eroton unbiased here don't look at him look at me he's not okay he can't
look at you what is the right way to spell Eric i will be completely honest still to this day
spelling Eric's name i will sometimes put a C set of a k but that is because i grew up with
three erics with a C i literally spell my name so you would say that you would say that that is
the correct spelling i literally say you could follow me at erik or uby like i spell it for you man
i can't say anything's correct okay pause
so back to erik olan okay man
erik olan currently the head coach at new mexico somebody who i've seen a lot i've seen actually
folks in the chat thrown around the name i've seen on social as well kind of in the same sentiment
as a Randy Bennett somebody that fits the bill in terms of a younger coach he's only 45
years old 45 years young i should say somebody that does have a solid amount of experience
was previously at UC San Diego for a a number of years as the head coach he was also an assistant at
UC San Diego other than that there aren't really direct ties to ASU there aren't necessarily ties to
the valley you bring up grammar senior there's a tie there there's there's a tie to Graham
there isn't a tie to the university right i mean they they grew up together in mobile alabama
get yourself the free agency frenzy deal 36 dollars yeah i think that's going to piss some people
off look i i think that a personal relationship with the athletic director is a strong thing to
consider right look whether you like it or not in this world relationships get you farther than
who you know that's what you know right why am i sitting here today towtry because you're good at
your job because i know you right i wouldn't i would not be here if i didn't get coffee with you
a couple of years ago you could be good at your job all that you want you got to kind of know
somebody to get your foot in the door in a lot of places not everybody but a lot of the times
knowing somebody's very important so um i i think this is an interesting name but the word stepping
stone yeah comes to mind and i don't blame people for doing this but obviously he he goes from
from UC San Diego and and i don't know if you remember the social but during our 24 hour stream
was the UC San Diego uh tritons game against Michigan oh my gosh you're right and it was Eric
because he only spent this is his first year in New Mexico right so i get like hey maybe
New Mexico's a stepping stone and then you're at Arizona state but i do wonder if like you take
Arizona state to like a competitive middle of the pack big 12 team if another bigger name opportunity
shows up if you want to see it out at Arizona state or if you want to move on because there is
something to be said about having a title and athletic director but having a title university is
deeper so we want another men's basketball coach do we want this what i'll say okay
i'm sorry to catch you off no please do we want another hire that has a direct tie to the athletic
director because the last time we did that right it's only not different and i'm just throwing
it out i hear you it's the truth i hear you though and i also think that would put a big spotlight
now the good news is that air colon is a good coach he's a competent man he has he's not a
senile old man yes it was a bad coach wasn't even coach in the NBA you're right it was
he was also not in the turn matter where it wasn't coaching he might as well i'm talking
I'm not quitting it's i'm about to say he might as well have been coaching the NBA um
but air colon is a good resume and would be from efforts coaching the NBA is all i can make good uh
he you played a win the third quarter
i hate him so much he's so bad i'm just imagining a her med words coach team in the NBA just
committing take files every single time i just wish i could see his is he a stand on the the
the oh he still wears a suit is he a sit down he doesn't wear the quarters if he wears suit he's
like because i respect tradition and he loses by 40 it's like the suit's not helping herman
um okay anyways like air colon air colon is a good coach and i i wonder if there is something
about like hey being able to make it to the big 12 is enough for me to be like i could see this
being like my forever it's not like he wasn't at UC San Diego for a long time he was he was an
assistant coach he was the head coach he was there for a long time then he went to to new Mexico and
now he might go somewhere else right yeah so he doesn't have like a pattern of job hopping but
no it is certain he doesn't get passed around by schools yeah yeah it's not something that he does
yeah not yet right for a novel with the comment just doc rivers is that term hurt doc yeah
i could see it i could see you play to win the game okay you play to win the game new Mexico is 22 and
nine on you they're having a really good season um in the mountain west out of all of the names
that we discussed today rank them glass or one all in two Bennett three on what you think or
like if you were making the higher yes okay that's the Eric three the Eric three
let's say Larry and the show and the show and the show dude and credit oh my god incredible
stuff incredible stuff look we are going to keep you guys updated here on the pH and X on
double show every single day uh on this higher of course spring football is right around the corner

believe is going to move very quickly when it comes to making this higher uh simply base because
you have the portal opening in less than a month um and you have a lot to figure out as it stands
right now i would say Eric Olan and Derek Glasser those names are certainly uh going to be in the heart
of this the towtory too this head coaching uh conversation i don't know how much rainy Bennett's name
is going to be realistically a in option here for grammar scene in Arizona state but we'll keep you
