Grateful Dead and Friends — What Shall We Say? - Remembering Bobby Weir - Part 1. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
You're listening to Unbroken Chain, music of the grateful dead and friends on K-Boo community radio Where today I'm going to start. What shall we say a tribute to Bob Weir? And ironically, I'm not sure what else I want to say right now. So I'm just going to turn it over to Bob Weir
He didn't tell me what I'm going to do. It's so long that I was waiting. I didn't know what I'm going to do. We're going to get it down that highway. We're going to show you the rest of the road. My time coming, the horses say, and they tell me that we're not going to work. Not not going to work. I didn't know. Not not going to work. And I thought, yeah, they're preaching on the burning shore. And I thought, yeah, they're knocking on the open door. Like an angel, standing in the shadows of light. Rising up to paradise, we're going to shine light. But you'll come in and day, you'll know it better.
You'll make bridges back to the city, maybe you'll know. It's so long that I'm stuck down. It's too long to wait. It's too long to wait. It's too long to wait. Rising up to paradise, we're going to shine light. You'll make bridges back to the city, maybe you'll know it better.
We're going to get it down that highway. It's so long to wait.

I had a couple other things in the bag and was excited to do those. And I'll just hold off on both of them because the first part of this year, like last year, is going to be a multi-part special looking back at the life's work of a grateful dead guitarist. Last year it was Phil Lesch, bass guitarist. This year it'll be Bob Weir, rhythm guitarist, color man as I like to think of him. And I'm honestly, again, not entirely sure what it is that I want to be saying while I'm talking here. So I'm just going to back announce what we've heard so far. We opened up with some ironically, unfortunately, appropriate words from Bob Weir himself. August 9, 1995, the day Jerry Garcia died. That was Bob speaking before the show he was scheduled to play that night and on he went. That went into estimated
profit June 12, 1980 here in Portland, Oregon. And throughout what shall we say, there will be reasonably heavy representation from Oregon. There's a lot of great, grateful dead shows from Oregon. I'm not going to make it a focus, but I keep finding myself pulling examples from Oregon shows. The estimated profit went into St. of Circumstance, which was recorded October 27, 1990. And I didn't pull up those fine details, but that's from the European tour. And the show was actually from the Zenith theater in Paris, France. So that's where we're at so far. What I'm planning on doing here in this multi part special is similar to believe it if you need it, my retrospective for Phil. I'm going to be
playing things across the entire span or almost the entire span of the grateful dead's career for two or three broadcasts. And then I will be doing two or three other shows focusing on Bob Weir's work after the grateful dead. However, I also may want to represent Bob Weir's solo projects when he was in the grateful dead. I haven't figured out if that's going to be part of the grateful dead shows or not grateful dead shows. Stay tuned. Speaking to staying tuned at the Facebook page, KBO dead inside Facebook. I've got a little bit of a live chat going. I'll be posting some more links, links to some articles, links to events surrounding the passing of Bob Weir and updates regarding what you're listening to today. This broadcast today, what shall we say, will really sort of focus on the
earlier part of the grateful dead era. I'm not quite sure where in the 70s, I'm going to sort of stop. And then the next broadcast will kind of pick up from right around that same time and bring us well through the 80s, perhaps into the 90s, we'll have to see. I don't know yet. Number here in the studio is 503231887. If you've got comments or questions, if you've got a favorite Bob Weir story experience. Yeah, let's say story or experience posted at the Facebook page or if you want to tell me about it personally, feel free to call Facebook KBO dead search for that inside Facebook that'll get you there. Let's see here. I'm not quite sure what I want to play next and I didn't really pull anything together for that. So let's do this. I'm going to jump around a little bit.
The grateful dead open to show with this tune only every once in a while, but really like this. Oh, and today's show is not just going to be weird originals. I'm going to be doing cover tunes as well. And I suppose that this will be our first one. Although they've never stopped rocking to the moon, we're dead. We're the sound is so sweet. I had to take a chance. Rolls out of the sea. But I had to do this. It started moving my feet. Oh, clapping my hand. Go to never stop rocking. Go to the ground and now.
They're really running. What a crazy sound. Well, they never stop rocking. You've got food with them. You've got food with them. Well, it will occur now, although the place is packed. The front doors will lock down.
A set place is packed with the police knockdown. Well, don't be bad. Though they never stop rocking. Going round and round. They've been running. But it's crazy sound. Oh, go to never stop rocking. You've got food with them. You've got food with them. Well, it sounds so sweet. I had to take a chance. Rolls out of the sea.
I had to take a chance. Rolls out of the sea. I had to take a chance. Rolls out of the sea. I had to take a chance. Rolls out of the sea. I had to take a chance. Rolls out of the sea. I had to take a chance. Rolls out of the sea.
I had to take a chance. I had to take a chance. Rolls out of the sea. I had to take a chance. Rolls out of the sea. Rolls out of the sea. Thank you all. We're going to take a short break. We're going to be back in a few minutes. Everybody, please.

You just keep turning while I land in the mountain You just keep turning while I land in the mountain Let's take a look at that. I see a listing of April 2nd 1973 that includes Weather Report Suite Part 1 but I think that's mistaken.
So this is either one week or several months before the next part of Weather Report Suite appeared. That was from March 28th 1973 at the Springfield Civic Center Arena in Massachusetts. Then we heard new new Mingle Wood Blues, Philmore East, May 15th 1970, the early show, and that was an unusual Mingle Wood Encore. And then lastly there, playing in the band, you might be able to catch a plan in the band for each of these what shall we say but I don't know for sure. That was April 14th 1972 at the Tivoli Concert Hall in Copenhagen, Denmark. One of those early sort of drifting into extended duration playing in the bands.
A little bit over 11 minutes there but nothing like they would do even later that year where play in would stretch to 20 and eventually over 30 and 40 minutes sometimes. And that brings us up to the moment. The whole playlist is at KBOO.FM. You can find out more information about today's show or share stories at our Facebook page KBOO.Dead inside of Facebook. Today, a tribute to Bob Weir, focusing on his earlier years in the grateful dead. We have kinda been all over the map today. If you've missed anything, you can check out the playlist at kbo.fm. Navigate or search for today's show. You can search for what shall we say or just go to the Saturday schedule. Okay, let's see, since I was last on the microphone, we heard black-throated wind from May 19, 1974 at Portland's Memorial Colosseum and following that, another rarity. It's all slew foot, and I do have who wrote all slew foot? That's a bilman row tune. Bilman row wrote the tune, I'm sorry, the lyrics, and two guys with last names,
Howzy and Manny wrote the music. Alongside seasons of my heart, all slew foot was also performed only eight times by the grateful dead. And all slew foot was from June 27, 1969 at the Veterans Auditorium down in Santa Rosa, California. And then most recently there, we heard greatest story ever told September 27, 1972 at the Stanley Theater in Jersey City, New Jersey. I got time for a couple more tracks here, and I believe I, yeah, I think what I'm going to do is I'm just going to go to those. Well, let's see here. Math, time. Yeah, I'll go to those, and I'll just say a quick see-a-later in a little bit. So, here once again is Bob Weir and the grateful dead.
Bob, time. Yeah, I'll go to those, and I'll just say a quick see-a-later in a little bit. I'll go to those, and I'll just say a quick see-a-later in a little bit. Yeah, I'll go to those, and I'll just say a quick see-a-later in a little bit. And then most recently there, we heard a couple more tracks here, and I believe I, yeah, I think what I'm going to do is I'm just going to go to those, and I'll just say a quick see-a-later in a little bit. Yeah, I'll go to those, and I'll just say a quick see-a-later in a little bit. She's got to hear the thing, ain't life good? She's got never think I'd know. There's the wheel, and I've seen no things like that when I speak.
I'd say just a quick see-a-later in a little bit. She's got never think I'd know. She's got never think I'd know. She could play as a cage on a river, and she could look with her, go with her eye. I'm still beloved and spring-folded in winter, she could make up in it in life. She could make up in it in life, and bring in that love. I'm caught up in trauma, and don't hold out saying I won't give up that sunshine. I'm caught up in comfort. She's got everything in life for her.
She's got everything in it in it. It's the five in the seven-night movie. It's easy if the seven-night movie. Yes, you can. Sometimes I'm a good coach, cryable. When I'm good, it's half way to the end. Sometimes I look back the other day. Shake the air, and I want to run. One way. One way. One way. One way.
One way. One way. One way. One way. One way. One way. One way. One way. One way.
One way. One way. One way. One way. One way. One way. One way.
One way. One way. One way. One way. One way. One way. One way. One way. One way.
One way. One way. One way. One way. One way. One way. One way. One way. One way. One way.
One way. One way. One way. It's not always the last tune. I do have one more for you, but I want to jump in here so the show ends with music. So right there, that of course was Sugar Magnolia with Sunshine Day Dream.
Recorded February 9, 1973 at the basically home turf of the Grateful Dead, Palo Alto, California, Stanford University. The entire playlist except for the last song is at the website. There are links you can go to to get the entire show featuring the songs I played today and everything else in that show. Let's see, we spanned 1968 and we're going to reach all the way to 1975. So pretty much about what I was hoping for. Hopefully it's what you were maybe not hoping for, but hopefully you enjoyed it. Thanks for the calls here in the studio. I'll be back next month with the next iteration of what shall we say, feel free to leave comments or requests at today's Facebook post.
For the show about future stuff you'd like to hear. Three hours of fantastic jazz is coming up next, right? You got fantastic jazz? There you go. Revolution and evolution wrapped up in one. This is KBOO Portland. This is KBOO.
This is KBOO. This is KBOO. This is KBOO. This is KBOO. This is KBOO. This is KBOO.
