What If Every NBA Team Could ERASE One Contract? (Eastern Conference)
About this episode
Locked On NBA – Daily Podcast On The National Basketball Association is made possible by:
What if every NBA team got a one-time amnesty clause to erase one contract from its salary cap? Wes Goldberg, Matt Moore and Haize put the Eastern Conference through the ultimate roster-building experiment.
With the NBA’s second apron making expensive contracts more restrictive than ever, which teams would actually use an amnesty clause — and which players would suddenly become free agents? Could the Philadelphia 76ers make the unthinkable decision to wipe Joel Embiid’s contract off their books? Would contenders sacrifice good players simply to escape the luxury tax and regain roster flexibility?
The guys eliminate the teams with no obvious reason to participate before debating the East’s most fascinating amnesty candidates and what those decisions would reveal about how NBA teams value stars, contracts and financial flexibility under the new CBA.

We are still putting the work in, guys, here on Labor Day. Does not change things. We are still talking about the NBA. And guys, we were talking the other day about an idea that I thought could make a good show. There's been so much debate about how the second apron and the new CBA and all of this has impacted tea building in teams not being able to keep players. You've got from an office executive talking about all of this as well. And I don't know. Maybe it would have made sense. And this is what we were kind of talking about the other day. Maybe it would have made sense if the league had implemented. And when they implemented the new CBA, a one-time amnesty clause like we saw the league give teams
about 10 years ago. So we started talking about which teams would use an amnesty on which players and decided hey, this would probably be a good episode. So that's what we're going to be doing today and tomorrow. We're going to do the Eastern Conference today. We'll do the Western Conference tomorrow. But I do want to make sure that we get to the most interesting stuff quickly. So to do that, I'm going to just eliminate some teams right off the bat that I don't think are going to use an amnesty clause if we were to give it to them. So you guys could definitely jump in if you have any disagreements here. So right off the top, I'm eliminating Detroit, Boston, Cleveland. I don't think any of those teams would use an amnesty clause if they had it. Any debate there? Detroit, Boston, Cleveland. Boston, Cleveland. Now? No. Right. Yeah. Give the cap to the end of the season. Then we might be looking at amnesty again. What might be? Might be. Look, I'm out on heart. I'm out. I'm out. I'm just out on this.
I'm out on this entirely. I've covered James' prime. I know what it was like in Houston and it was really good. He was actually a lot better than people realize of being the guy in the gym. But I could see that happening. Detroit's pretty lean. So I will go ahead and say I agree with you on Detroit. I can't find anybody. Yeah. One of the things I think is interesting here though is that you assume some teams just wouldn't use it. And I'm like, I don't know. Everybody would use it. They just might use it for somebody that's under $2 million to save a little bit of it. It might be something small that they wind up using. We're going to dump Kevin Herder and get that $16 million. That was the one that I looked at in Detroit. I was like, yeah, but he's kind of a trade chip too. That's $9 million. Technically, they signed him to that this off season. That's a lot of things. Celtics, I can't think of anybody that they would need to because they cleared all the all the money after books. They would have liked to have this last year.
I do that actually is kind of an issue question. If they had the ham and see when they had drew and and Christ apps, what they've used it on either one of them instead of trading them out. Probably on Christ apps. You got returned. So like they got returned. They had to pay. I think they did they send a pick with with Christ apps. They did. I think they probably use it for poor Zengus. They probably they probably will use it for. They got good return on. For some reason. So and we said nothing uncle. Cleveland would be interesting like, hey, we could pay James Harden, but also not keep him on our roster. So it's like, did we actually go back on our word? Could they have done that and then got liberal James like? That's actually the best way to do this is like they would use the amdesty on James Harden. They just wouldn't use it yet. They would just here's 40 million dollars now also go away and you don't impact our cap. Right. Second group of teams that I'm going to eliminate from the sex or size. I'm eliminating Brooklyn and Washington. If you guys wanted to bait those rosters we can, I honestly don't think those teams are
interesting enough. You were in full Miami Elite this morning. I mean look, the third highest player on the Wizard is AJ. It's just 80 and tray. And they obviously you can't say they would use it on tray young because they just opted to give him the money. But this is another one of those like let's wait six months. Like six months from now they might use it on. Yeah. Hazel, is there any argument here for an Anthony Davis amdesty because it's the only reason I was like, no, I think not only because it seems like they may have had the option to trade them this all season if they wanted to and decided not to. So it appears that they want them there. Yeah, which is crazy. I would agree with you on the Wizard's though. Yeah, I thought about Anthony Davis, but I think at the end of the day, like there's also some like they could trade him and get something right. And for a Wizard's team that is trying to build something there, you know, if an pj wasn't expiring, they might honestly use it on him. There was a report over the weekend. Two guys went on the third apron from Brooklyn and we're talking about how like they can't
do anything with them. Like he wants an extension. They are nowhere near close to terms and they can't find a suitable trade partner. It's the perception within the league and with the fans very wide on Michael board. Junior. They have on their roster, Brooklyn does. And again, you could maybe make an argument for. I don't know like would they keep. I mean, they're probably keeping what's his name, Julius Randall, right? If they're not going to, they're just amnesty him. It's the expiring. Well, no way. He's got to, he's got player option next year. They might use it on Julius. They'll be able to move. They just traded for him. I think they'll be able to flip them. I think they'll be able to flip them at the deadline. Okay. Terence man's like a $15 million salary with they just like amnesty Terence man. Yeah. Maybe something like that. Probably. The other team will eliminate is the New York Knicks. They just won the title. They're very, very top heavy. They already kind of made their money moved by swapping Mitchell Robinson out and bringing
Andre Drummond in for a much lower figure. I just, they, and they resign guys like Landry's shaman and all these other guys. I just don't see the guy on the New York Knicks roster that would get amnesty after they just won a championship. So they accomplished the goal of winning a championship and they got jail and brown some back on discounted deal. Can they amnesty Rick Brunson now? Is that what they can we just be done with that? Any other teams that are worth eliminating because those, those are six teams that I just out of the 15 teams in the Eastern Conference. I just eliminated six so that we could focus on some of the more interesting teams that we can actually have a debate about. But am I missing anybody? Is there a dead money on our Orlando? Is that missing? I did want to like, would they do, would the magic do something crazy? And I'm going to, no, don't say it. No, that's too far. Trading him okay, but no. Come on now. Are we thinking the same player? I'm thinking you're saying you can palo. No, never.
All right, that would be, that's very, very crazy. No, I, Jalen Suggs. Oh. With his injury history, I don't think that you could trade him. And could you move, can you just amnesty Jalen, I love Jalen Suggs, by the way. This is not an anti-jalen Suggs take. I just think for that money, for that particular roster where they are against the salary cap, they amnesty Jalen Suggs and then all of a sudden they have way more flexibility to make some moves around that roster, elevate Anthony Black and kind of do all of that. It is a lot of money, but it's also, you also have to think about this that they still do owe the money. Yeah, and that's sort of like an ownership question. Right. Is ownership going to be like, yes, we'll pay $30 million to Jalen Suggs for four years. Yeah, that's the other problem. Yeah. That's the same rule unlikely. And they love Jalen Suggs and Orlando and ownership. Yeah, and like you'll probably have a year where he shoots like 34% from three, like he'll probably have a better year. Like the injuries stuff I think is also manageable. Okay, so we're eliminating the magic. They're not going to be part of this exercise.
Okay. Grizzlies. We're doing East today. Oh, I'm sorry. They should be in the Eastern Conference, but they're not. They. Did you say Atlanta? I did not, I did not eliminate Atlanta. Should I? I think so. I think they're, they're, it's pretty, it's pretty tight there with their budget. I don't, I can't think anybody they would have to see personally. I mean, I'm open to hearing it. Dyson is like a very divisive contract where. So like Dyson is 2024 season was actually, like 2425 was actually not that good. He was paid on like getting a lot of steals for a defense that was bad. And he's actually less of a shooter now. But if you look at, if you kind of go into the hood at Dyson, you kind of find like, oh, he's got real ability to create. He's a really good passer. So I think he's probably fine. To me, this is like a lot of money having, you know, four years, a hundred million
to left on Dyson Daniels is a lot. Like it's crazy that that if you look at the contract, like Dyson Daniels is making 25 Nikhilogs and interwalkers making 15. And I think Nikhilogs and interwalkers like twice as valuable as Dyson Daniels. And that kind of balances it out though where they don't have to necessarily do anything. CJ's on a one year 21. So they wouldn't do that. They're like a conglomerate. He was actually really good last year too. Yeah, I think their cap sheets pretty clean. They have one of the more expensive rosters in the league, which is why I just didn't want to eliminate them. But I also like to your point, I looked at their cap sheet and was like, there's no glaring thing here that I would like it would it would it just be boring and just with the amnesty like a buddy healed so that they get off the full contract as opposed to just the partial guarantee or would they like that probably seems like or like a Corey Kispert but they signed him pretty recently. But just to kind of alleviate some of the payroll issues that they have, but that's boring. So we could just sort of eliminate them if we went to out of interest. Is there a PASER's guy that we think would be I think there's a couple of names that
could be on the we should start the real list there then because I would say that their cap sheets pretty clean. So we just eliminated one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight teams, which leaves us with seven teams left in the Eastern Conference to discuss. We're going to go into the next segment nominate some of these teams. Maybe we start with the Indian PASER's some of the contracts that could be good targets for them to amnesty that's coming up next. We're talking about the teams that we think in the Eastern Conference might use an amnesty provision if they were allowed to use a one time amnesty provision. Let's start with the Indiana Pacers right where we left off in the first segment, Matt. Are there any names that stand out to you that the Pacers might use an amnesty on? I'm looking at this cap sheet and I can't really find one. See, Icom, Haliburton, Zubach, Nemhard, by the way, most of these contracts are up in two years. So they're pretty, they're not long term. They're not tied to them. Obey Toppins, Good Value, Neesmith's great value. TJ McConnell is Don Guirin Teed next season. Jarrah's Walker is 8.5. Ben Shepard is 5 million. Like I can't find anything on here. What is it that you're thinking that the Pacers might want to cut less?
The only person that stands out to me is Toppins and not to say that he's not good value, but like Toppins has two years left on his contract. If there was a different target that they wanted to play that role coming off the bench, maybe then they would amnesty him, but I still like to to the point. I mean, if they didn't want Toppins, I don't think they'd have a hard time moving them. Yeah, I was looking at either Toppins or Jarrah's Walker. If they've just determined behind the scenes, like, yeah, it's just not going to work. Can we just get off that 8.5 million, just give us a little bit more flexibility under the cap? This is the only thing. It wasn't going to be anything crazy here. I just thought, yeah, maybe one of those two guys would they just walk away from that money and start over? I mean, so this is an interesting question. What should an impact player off the bench make at Forward West? I think right around what those guys are making, but they're paying two of them, I guess. Toppins and Am Walker. Yeah. A Walker's making an 8, and I consider Walker to be kind of like an ancillary guy. I consider Toppins to be part of the core.
Yes. Toppins was great in the Eastern Conference Finals versus the next. He was awesome. Is it these five years older than Walker? So I just like if they were to make a decision there? It's 15 million worth it for, I think that's what you got. I do think you got to kind of value this because it's like, one thing you should not do in these conversations is get caught up with the idea I think of like, you know, if we move it, we'd have all this flexibility. We reflect ability has to go towards somewhere. Right. We wind up in the same place as the draft pick stuff is like, you could try to be top in for a pick. That pick might even be as good as, oh, be top in like you find yourself in the circular kind of thing. I can't find a reason for the for the Pacers to use it outside of like, maybe Ben Shepherd is like the kind of move I would expect. I mean, I guess I see West's point because you have Walker, you have Toppins, similar players, similar position, similar production. I think that's what it goes to like if you are trying to do something different with your roster, you may just say, yeah, let's, let's go, let's build on the guy who's five years younger and use that money from Toppins to go somewhere else.
Or we've Walker, right? I just reallocate those funds to a different position. I don't know, but like top in it, if you think a legit guy off your bench, you could kind of be a sixth, seventh man type, $15 million sounds about right, especially when you're paying a couple of starters, you know, 19 and a half in them heart and 11 million and needs Smith was a really good value. So they could afford this like they don't have to do anything here. And then we also have to look at the fact that they are in a luxury tax paying team. They're not going to pay the tax by any means. And I don't know, you know, with contracts coming up, but that could be another reason why to his nominate another team or player that you think is definitely on the chopping block. If teams are allowed in amnesty. Oh, great one. Even though they just signed them to this contract, get a drink junior with the Milwaukee Bucks. Cause what the hell is that? I mean, you gave him the deal because you promised it to him. You didn't promise him a roster spot in this case, much like we say with the harder thing, he's still getting his money. He's just not going to be on the roster. You could reallocate that money somewhere else.
Bill Walker is an interesting one too, because you can make the argument for maybe a couple of guys on that roster. Gary Trent, would they do it the Kuzma? Oh, God, yes. Oh, yeah. God, yeah. That Kuzma is like the ultimate. That's like, yes. Go just do not be here. That is that player that you want to have the amnesty for. I will say like I think the GTJ stuff is a little overrought, not in terms of the talk about tampering. It was obviously, obviously, collect the bargaining violation. I am shocked to find anything. I don't know what else I have to clippers. But I actually, GTJ was really good two years ago. Like he was really good two years ago and have bad year last year in the midst of like, I always, I give everybody on the bucks past last year. I give everybody a pass because when you have that yana situation, it just everything gets destroyed. No, I'm sorry. I give everyone except Kalk who's my pass. Everybody else gets a pass. So, um, Emmanuel quickly, Toronto Raptors.
Hmm. I thought that he's, you know, somebody was kind of posted his, um, like he had one month where he was like, absolutely terrific, you know, and it's like, how show still what he's kind of capable of. The Raptors, there's no way that they use it on quickly versus Pertle. No way. Oh, yeah, Pertle. I just, I don't think about that contract because it's so bad. It's clearly Pertle. Like here's a better question. Who would use it? Who would race to the amnesty? The Raptors go Pertle. Like, literally, literally the first or the bulls with Patrick Williams. Hey, so I was waiting for you to nominate Patrick Williams. That was right there. Here's the, here's the thing with the Patrick Williams thing. And I, and again, because of the ownership there, I know how cheap they are. Patrick, the bulls technically have cap space for a max level free agent each of the next two years. If they, even if they resign their core guys, Patrick Williams isn't at the place yet where he's really limiting the bulls from doing anything because again, I think that's the way that I look at it with the bulls. Now, and after that part, then yeah, they probably would amnesty Patrick Williams,
but I just know the ownership is not going to pay $14 million for God of God away with three years left on his deal. A sneaky one is they wouldn't use it now. They would use it at the end of the year. The Boston Celtics would use it on Paul George to go into free agency with that money. What the 76 is using on Joel B. Yeah, that's a big, that's the big one, right? That's the one that like everybody's thinking of is like, would you do it now or would you wait till the end of the season? Probably way to get the see if he can say healthy. And if not, you probably use it at the end of the season. Yeah. That's, that's the big one, isn't it? Yeah. You would have to use it at the end of the year, but it would be like, okay, Joel and B couldn't stay healthy for one more season. We're going to amnesty him and then we're going to go find a new center at that spot. They could even do it in the middle of the year, right? And say, hey, we amnesty him and then maybe absorb a salary at center who's just a little bit more reliable. Joel and B played 15 games between now and the trade like the beginning of the season and then tried to land like hypothetically.
Yeah. I had is a bananas move for everything that they've invested in that guy though. It would be great. I don't know how the like the fan, there'd be a civil war within the fans, which in Philadelphia means actual civil war. Um, I have a, I have a three way conundrum for you. Let's say that you had to bid that three teams got placed in a bucket and they had to outbid each other for the right to pay these guys and not have them on their cap. Owners having to pay more money. John Morant and the Blazers. Jalen Green and the sons. These are two western connoisseurs and the spurs. These are all western conference teams. Oh, I forgot. I'm sorry. Well, that's tomorrow. That's tomorrow. Come on. Good morning. Great question for tomorrow. We're going to continue this conversation on the next side of the break. Stay tuned throughout the off season as we cover the biggest stories. We have a handful of teams that we have not talked about so far that we haven't eliminated. Charlotte Hornets Miami heat. We already talked on Milwaukee. Those are really the two teams we haven't talked about so far. Would any of would Charlotte or Miami? Do you guys think use the amnesty on any of their players? Do I finish Smith for Charlotte? I was thinking Charlotte could easily do I have any Smith or Grant Williams, right? Yeah, one of those they have. We definitely clean up the books with it for sure. That's maybe the biggest no brainer, I think out of all those. Box. I can't find any. But well, this is actually a good question. Kuzma makes 20 and his expiring miles turner has two more years. Oh, I didn't think they just traded for Kalaweir. So you'd be like, we can amnesty. Right. No, I'm sorry. I that's like a nice random fact that has nothing to do with anything. But they did in fact acquire Khalilware. The numbers on, by the way, I keep finding all these random stats about Khalilware.
Like I'll just be looking at some random leaderboard and be like, like, who's the worst at this? And Khalilware keeps popping. Well, that's not meant hated on somebody this bad. They became an all-star. So just keep going, man. You guys would have been the last to call me every seven all-star. The last time I hit on somebody this bad, Denny. Oh, no, I this is way worse than Denny. At least. Look, I just everything about Khalil to me screams that he's, I just, how do you tell me he's not has on white side? Well, that was the concern. How do you possibly tell me he's not has on white side? He's younger and you hope that he grows out of some of those bad habits. So I mean, he's spent 33 years old making $14 million. Grant Williams, 28 years old, making $14.2 million for Charlotte. I think they use it on them. I don't think they would use it on Truder. Seems like they actually wanted him. And you're not using it on the eBay. That's like minor salary. Those are all our young guys. Let's go back to the Wizards.
Okay. I don't think that they matter, but I think this is a good question. Let's say that the Amnesty Clause was presented right now that was granted today. And you could use it any time the next calendar year. The Wizards wouldn't do anything right now. Haze. After one year, do you think they would use it on Trayon? It could. I mean, if they see in a similar situation where he's not just vibing with the young guys, it very well could get to that. And they may use it just just because they can't use it before expires. They say they got a calendar year to use it. Like I've been really impressed with Tray because Tray got to Washington and instead of pounding and being all in his head about losing out on his franchise, he was like, okay, like let's turn the page cool. Like he was a total pro about it. He didn't complain. He thanked Atlanta. He showed up. He hung out with the guy like he was going to games and on the bench instead of hanging out in the back or just like not with the team. Like Tray's done everything you want from a guy in his position to be brought in and be like, I want to help these guys win.
I'm going to help the young guys. Like we're going to be good. He hasn't been like, it's me and AD. He's been like, these young guys are really talented. Like we're going to do this. So like I have, I, I, I want to give Tray a lot of credit for what he's the work that he's put in so far in terms of like mental and emotional equity. I am just kind of like, if you get through a year and you're like, yeah, but we can't win with you. Like we just can't do it. And we've got AJ and we've got and Tray, Johnson's made a leap and, you know, maybe I don't think so, but maybe Bob Carrington makes a leap. Like one of these guys does. Does that change kind of the equation for you? Somebody like and beat or Tray young. I don't remember the last time we had this round of amnesty clauses. Anybody like that getting waived. Am I wrong? I'm trying to remember. It was always sort of these more mid-tier type of players. Like I remember the Miami Heat used theirs on Mike Miller because he couldn't stay healthy. And he was making like whatever he was making. Speaking of the heat, I think heat fans would say, Nikola Yovic at 16.2. They would just use the amnesty on him.
I don't know that they would. I think they'd be like, hey, 23 years old, maybe at the end of the year, if Niko hasn't taken that lead, but right now, I don't think they would do it. They wouldn't do it for sure. There's no way they would do it. How else are they going to hold on to him and deny using him in a trade for another superstar? That's a good point, Matt. That's what that's like that. Why they keep these guys around is so they could not trade them for a star of players. In 2013, this is from the Oklahoma. Only 15 teams had used the amnesty clause in the two years since it was provided. So I just kind of tell you, I mean, it should not surprise you because this is like, you have to go to your owner and be like, hey, so we signed someone to such or somebody else did. Somebody signed this guy to such a bad contract. We need you to pay him out to do nothing. I wonder of those teams that didn't use it. How many of those GMs were the one that signed the player to the deal that they amnesty? Because that would be a very interesting wrinkle in that. Yeah. Gilbert Arena's got amnesty. Oh, that's right. Oh, yeah, that's true. He's probably the player.
But that was after what his second knee injury? Yeah, a lot of these ended up just being injury guys. Yeah. So I think if we were to do, if we're going to wrap up this conversation, I have two questions for you guys. Who is the amnesty lock of all the guys that we talked about? Like, is there just one lock? Okay, this is the amnesty clause is almost invented, brought back for this particular player. Yeah, it's part of it. Okay. And then of the players that got amnestyed, who would be the guy who would get signed the quickest by another team? Because he can actually help a team on a better contract. Well, if somebody like we say, like, oh, be top and I think oh, be top and you picked a way. Oh, be top and go on top. Yeah. Why don't the Pacers do it? It is like paying oh, be top and 15 million to not play and go play for it. Like the nicks might bring them back. Honestly, Pearl would get picked up pretty quick as long as he's just not on that crazy contract. It's not doing normal contract for a center. Yeah, well, yeah. I mean, look, a lot of it's like, we'll see what the first six months look, or first two months look like this season for the Raptors. I do want to give Yacht this. Yacht's been dealing with like a serious back injury.
And if that gets better, which does happen, guys do get over back injuries. He's just going to look like a normal NBA rotation center again. He doesn't need to start over CMB because if they see him, he's better because of the switchability. But like, Yacht was a good player. Yeah. He just like, he's had a serious back problem. I will say if they wait, if they just outright cut Yacht, they don't really have a traditional center on the roster. They could play CMB there, but then other than that, they have no depth at that spot. Does Patrick Williams get signed? No. Oh, no. Yeah, yeah, by the Wong Dong Tigers in China. Congratulations, Patrick Williams. I think he would get amissed. I know Hayes laid out the entire case about why he wouldn't, but listen, a good owner. Absolutely. It's we're talking about the Rhyse Dorf's here. Oh, that's a good point. Is Jerry Rhyse Dorf going to pay $36 million for somebody to go away? $36 million. He could spend on the white socks, West.
That's a good point. He's not even doing that anymore because that's not done. That is it for our Eastern Conference Amnesty Round tomorrow. We're going to do the Western Conference. We'll get to Max's question about something about buckets and bids and John Morant.
