What Happens When A Blackman Admits He Is Not Ok?

For many men, keeping things close to the vest can feel like protection. Health concerns.

Mental health.

Financial struggles.

Marriage problems.

Fear.

Failure.

Problems with our children.

Even parts of our past we would rather people not know.

But there’s a difference between privacy and secrecy, and sometimes a difference between protecting ourselves and protecting the image we want other people to see.

In this episode of Four Titles, One Truth, Tommie and Lance examine this question through their own experiences as Black men, husbands, fathers, and veterans.

Where did we learn what a man should handle on his own? Why can admitting something is wrong feel dangerous? Who gets to see the man behind the image? What happens when information shared in confidence becomes ammunition? And what has keeping everything inside cost us?

We also confront a harder question: Have we ever exaggerated, omitted, or reshaped parts of our own stories because we wanted to appear stronger, more successful, more relevant, or more capable than we actually felt?

This is not a conversation telling Black men to open up, share everything, or trust everybody. Some things deserve to remain private, and everybody has not earned access to our vulnerability.

Instead, we’re asking ourselves:

Am I keeping this to myself because it deserves to be private—or because I’m afraid of what you’ll think of me if you know the truth?

And ultimately:

Has allowing someone to know the man behind the armor been worth the risk?
