Westminster Council's Idling Engine Crackdown

0:00On March 6th, Westminster City Council under its labor leadership has ramped up enforcement against drivers idling their engines. Since taking control in May 2022, parking officers have issued 66 penalty notices from 936 complaints that works out to 1 fine for every 15 reports. Earlier under conservative control, the numbers were much lower. Over the four years before the switch, just 1 fine came for every 1096 complaints. The council uses civil penalty charge notices, which officers can hand out on the spot, unlike police issued fixed penalties. Torries on the council questioned the real impact. They point out their administration started this penalty system back in May 2018, as the first in the country. Critics say labor might just be spinning on promotion without much change. Labor officials admit more work is needed. They've installed nearly 1,000 signs warning drivers to turn off engines or face a 110 pound fine. The council is also pushing the government for simpler rules to issue these penalties.
