Weekly Roundup: Brown-Forman Soars, Entergy Gains, Estee Lauder Drops
About this episode
On this episode of Stock Movers:
- Shares of Jack Daniel’s whiskey maker Brown-Forman (BF/B) soared as much as 21% on Thursday, a record intraday climb, following a Bloomberg report that French beverages company Pernod Ricard is seeking to buy the company. Wall Street notes that the Brown family has the majority of voting control and has rebuffed previous attempts to sell, but persistent industry weakness could make a deal more likely.
- Entergy (ETR) was the best performing stock in the S&P 500 Friday, jumping 8%. The gains came after Meta struck a deal with Entergy Louisiana, through which it will pay for new energy infrastructure to support a forthcoming data center in the region. The $27 billion facility, currently under construction, is set to be Meta's largest data center ever.
- Estee Lauder (EL) shares drop on news that the company is in talks to buy Puig Brands SA, which would create a cosmetics giant with about $20 billion in annual sales.

Your roundup of companies making moves in the stock market. Harnessing the power of Bloomberg data. I'm Tim Stenevek, along with Isabelle Lee. Let's take a look at some stocks on the move this week. We are joined by Bloomberg News Equity's reporter, Avalan Pernell. How are you? Good. How are you guys doing? We're doing well. It's party. Yeah, we had a little party in here. And we're going to continue the party and keep it going. Not a party if you're long this market. What did you find this week? I actually have a pretty mixed group. Some good, some bad. We can start off with one of the good. Let's do it. And that's ticker BF slash B. Jump 19% this week to notch.
It's biggest weekly gain since 1993. Wow. That's after the firm confirmed that it was in talks with Pernot record to merge amid an industry-wide downturn. So despite the party, people aren't really drinking these days. And as consumer taste continued to change, people are thinking that the combo of Pernot's brands like Absolute Vodka and Jameson Irish Whiskey could mesh well with brown foreman's whiskeys as well. So we'll take a look and keep an eye out for it. JP Morgan still says that while the deal makes strategic sense, it's unclear how the family will actually vote. They have voting control. It's been generations. I mean, we're talking about the parent company of Jack Daniels. Like, this goes back many, many years. Since 1993 is. Yeah, really. Oh, for just the stock performance this week. Yeah, pretty amazing. What's next? Estee Lauder is my mom's favorite makeup brand. Oh, it's my mom's favorite brand as well. That's the thing. I don't hear of a lot of young people in my friend group favoring it. And that may be part of the problem is dropped 22% this week.
That's after the beauty company confirmed it was in talks to merge with the Spanish brand Puge, which some of us may know their brand like Charlotte Tilbury and Carolina Herrera, which at least for me, with her film, Big Fan. But Alice say that while the merger could boost Estee Lauder's fragrances segment, there's still a lot of questions about whether the timing is right when Estee Lauder is still in the very early stages of recovery. Okay. We have one last very quick. Enturgy. Yes. Enturgy Tiger ETR gained 10% this week, hit a record high, and also closed at its highest level since 1980. That's after Meta agreed to fund seven gas plants to provide electricity to a data center that it has in Louisiana. And yeah, Jeffrey says that energy remains the best way to invest in data centers through utilities. Your size and scopes are fantastic since 1980 since 1983. This is what you have to know about Avalon Pernell. I know. She comes to play. You're great.
You definitely beat me when I do the movie. So this is great. There's room for everybody here. What do we have both of us? That'll be fun. It'll be a perfect segment. That sounds great. That's Avalon Pernell. She's Bloomberg News Equity's reporter here. For more conversations like this, check out our new Stock Movers podcast you can subscribe.
