小说写于1987年，以回族穆斯林手工玉器作坊奇珍斋的升沉起伏为主线，描写了三代人在历史浪潮中的命运变迁、理想追求和爱恨情仇。小说于1989、1991年两度在中央人民广播电台全文播出。1991年获得茅盾文学奖。2019年入选“新中国70年70部长篇小说典藏”。小说迄今畅销近500万册，但近年来，也陆续出现负面评价和较大争议。
霍达，女，生于1945年，回族，北京人，国家一级作家。代表作《补天裂》《万家忧乐》《海棠胡同》等。
