USC Next Master Plan: Boosting Student Housing & Facilities

0:00On March 21st, University of South Carolina architect Derek Gruner gave an update on the USC next master plan for campus facilities. The focus is on boosting student housing around the horseshoe, expanding the Russell House Student Union and redeveloping South Main Street. Many ideas, like the Russell House work and Main Street builds, remain conceptual and need approvals, housing projects lead the way. Woodrow is under renovation now to house more students centrally. McBride gets a full replacement with a six story hall holding 900 beds set for fall of 2028, complete with a central lounge, courtyard, and rooftop garden. Honors will add a wing for 200 extra residents while capstone undergoes mechanical upgrades, keeping students out for about a year and a half. Student needs drive the Russell House plans. With student organizations doubling over the past 10 years, the push is for more recreation space, meeting rooms, a bigger ballroom, basement, additions, and rooftop lounges.

University-owned spots like the Burns building could become six story mixed use with ground floor retail, upper-level housing, and added parking. Meanwhile, other updates include the new Brain Health Center Open March 18th, a med school building underway, approved neurological hospital. Science facility in design, library, and museum work, plus fitness center and parking improvements. Construction ramps up in 2027 and 2028, but officials plan clear paths and messaging to keep campus life smooth. These upgrades mean short-term disruptions for long-term gains in student life and facilities.
