Welcome to Birmingham News today, two minutes of news that mattered to Birmingham. The Alabama Department of Transportation is closing all lanes of US-280 in Mountainbrook for the demolition of the Pump House Road Bridge. Starting Friday, March 20th at 11pm, both eastbound and westbound lanes shut down completely. Eastbound traffic toward the summit stays closed until Monday, March 22nd, while westbound lanes toward downtown Birmingham reopen each. Starting at 5am before closing again at 11pm, officials recommend detours for drivers. Eastbound travelers should take Lakeshore Parkway to Interstate 65, then Interstate 459, and back to US-280. Westbound follows the same path in reverse. All lanes fully reopen no later than 6am on Monday. This work affects daily commuters heading to Birmingham or the summit, so planned for extra travel time over the weekend. The project has been ongoing since November 2025, aiming to widen the highway and boost capacity.
Crews already installed the first three of five girders for the new bridge last November. Al. calls this the second full closure of the road, with one more weekend shut down expected soon after March 22nd. The entire widening effort wraps up this fall, promising smoother traffic flow, long term. Thanks to everyone for bearing with the disruptions. The daily news now is powered by a sponsor.
