كان الهجاء عند العرب سلاحًا يشهرونه في وجه أعدائهم، حيث تكون كلمات القصيدة أشبه بطلقات المسدس، قادرة على إلحاق الأذى بالأعداء، كما حدث في واقعة "جرير والراعي النميري".وكانت "المنافرات" أقدم صور الهجاء العربي التي وصلتنا من العصر الجاهلي. ثم تطور الأمر وظهر محترف الهجاء "الحطيئة" الذي حول الشعر لوسيلة للتكسب. وبلغ شعر الهجاء العربي ذروته في العصر الأموي مع نقائض جرير والفرزدق وثالثهما الأخطل. #الدحيح
