منذ مواجهة الاتحاد السوفييتي وألمانيا النازية في الحرب العالمية الثانية، بدأ الروس في محاولة الوصول لسلاح يكافئ البنادق الألمانية حينها، ومن هنا بدأت جذور الكلاشينكوف أو AK-47. ولم يتوقف من حينها انتشار ذلك السلاح، حتى أنه أصبح رمزا لكثير من الجيوش او الجماعات المسلحة وفي أعلام بعض البلدان، وقتل وحده من البشر أكثر مما قتلت القنابل الذرية.
