塔尔寺又名塔儿寺。得名于大金瓦寺内为纪念黄教创始人宗喀巴而建的大银塔，古称“佛山”，藏语称为“衮（音gun）本贤巴林”，意思是：“十万狮子吼佛像的弥勒寺”。它座落在湟中县鲁沙尔镇西南隅的连花山坳中，是我国喇嘛教（藏传佛教）格鲁派（黄教）创始人宗喀巴诞生地，我国藏传佛教格鲁派（黄教）六大寺院之一，也是青海省的名胜古迹和全国重点文物保护单位。
