Today's show is called understanding pH in self-care and healing. I'll share both sides of my expertise. We'll explore how the balance of pH plays a critical role in healing, skin care, and even health, taking a deeper look at how this simple concept impacts our day-to-day lives. I'll also share practical science back tips from skin care to healing practices that have helped me and my clients improve their well-being, followed by personal experiences that illustrate the power of pH balance in everyday life.

In this, we'll explore the science behind everyday household products and their effects on how pH influences the skin's health. Let's jump into it. Understanding pH in self-care and healing. Let's start by defining pH. pH measures the percentage of hydrogen ions, concentration, and a solution. It determines whether a substance is acidic or alkaline. The pH scale runs from 0 to 14. Most people understand the word acid. Not many understand the word base. Acidic substances have a pH between 0 and 7. Neutral substances have a pH of 7, like pure water. Alkaline substances have a pH between 7 and 14. An alkaline substance is also known as a base. This is crucial for our bodies because our skin, digestive system, and even blood rely on maintaining specific pH levels for proper functioning. An imbalance can lead to skin irritations to more severe health concerns.

The skin has an acymano, which is an invisible film of protection. It is composed of amino acids, sebum, sweat, and beneficial microorganisms that help maintain a slightly acidic pH, around 4.5 to 5.5. It acts as a barrier against harmful bacteria, pollutants, and helps maintain hydration. Unfortunately, many skincare products disrupt this natural pH, leading to skin issues such as dryness, irritation, and acne. Alkaline products such as soap, cleansers, and many commercial skincare products have a higher pH. While they may feel refreshing, these products can strip the skin of its natural oils, damaging the acid mantle, and leading to dehydration, irritation, and even acne causing bacterial growth. Harsh physical scrubs, with large rough particles, like walnut shelves or sugar,

can cause micro tears and compromise the high acid. Mental high concentrations of chemical exfoliants such as AHAs, BHAs, or aggressive peels can disrupt the skin's natural pH and can strip the acid mantle if used daily or multiple times a week. Some exfoliating alkaline cleansers or scrubs with a high pH above 7 can neutralize the acid mantle, making the skin more vulnerable to irritation and dehydration. Eliscorbit acid, also known as vitamin C, in skincare solution, is intentionally made to a more acidic pH to penetrate the skin because it is water-based. It does not directly strip the acid mantle, but can weaken or disrupt it if used incorrectly. It's low pH of 2.5 to 3.5 aligns closely with the skin's natural acidic environment, GH 4.5 to 5.5, so it does not strip the acid mantle like harsh exfoliants.

Side concentrations of 15 to 20% can cause irritation, redness, or sensitivity, which may indicate a week in barrier. Daily use, especially alongside exfoliants like AHAs, BHAs, or retinoids, can disrupt the acid mantle, making this skin more prone to dryness, irritation, or breakouts. Oxidized vitamin C, which turns orange brown, may become irritating and compromise the skin's barrier, rather than benefit it. Choose the right strength. Start with 10 to 15% if you have sensitive skin. It lasts longer when paired with fibrillic acid, vitamin E, or hyaluronic acid. Good quality Eliscorbit acid is generally more expensive because it's so unstable. Choose mild chemical exfoliants, PHA, lactic acid, or enzyme-based exfoliants. Follow with using a pH balancing toner, hydrating moisturizer to restore skin balance.

Oily skin tends to be more acidic around 4.5. While dry skin tends to be more neutral or slightly alkaline, around 5.5. For optimal skin care, the goal is to use products that support the skin's natural acidity, restoring and protecting the acid mantle. We can restore balance and protect the skin by choosing products with a slightly acidic pH. But how can we know if a product suits our skin? Adelaide pH is not indicated on the labels, but there are steps you can take to take care of your skin. Moisturizers work best when applied to damp skin because they lock in moisture. If your skin is dry before applying moisturizer, you're likely not getting the full benefit. Many people skip toners due to the cost. Toners help prepare the skin by balancing its pH. A dental pH balanced toner can restore the skin's natural acidity and remove access oils or impurities. Follow with a moisturizer rich in nutrients and fatty acids to strengthen the barrier.

Litma strips are also available to purchase to detect the pH. Consider using Holistic Skin Care Products. I've used Zincara Holistic Skin Care Products since 1994. These products have natural ingredients that maintain skin health and pH balance. Inzyme exfoliants are generally gentler than physical or chemical exfoliants, and why use correctly are less likely to strip the acid mantle. They break down keratin proteins and dead skin cells without disrupting the skin's pH or causing excessive irritation. Many enzyme exfoliants like papaya and pineapple enzymes are ideal for sensitive dry or compromised skin. The enzyme peel I perform utilizes calming ingredients to counteract the aggressiveness of the enzymes. A collagen massage cream is applied before the peel to protect the skin. There is no chance of misuse. There is no need to exfoliate after an enzyme peel. Mixing enzyme exfoliants with strong acids or scrubs can be too aggressive.

Your skin may become vulnerable if you don't follow up with hydrating and barrier repairing ingredients. Use the enzyme exfoliants with hydrating ingredients. I know not everyone is concerned about cosmetic skincare. Next we'll be sharing necessary moments to use acid and bases for extreme emergencies. Now let's take some time for a commercial break. Now I'll start with some personal experiences that demonstrates pH crucial role in everything from skin reactions to common ailments.

The first incident I want to share involves a bee sting. When you get stung by a bee, the bee injects formic acid into the skin which can cause a burning sensation. Mosquito bites also release formic acid from their saliva. To neutralize this an alkaline solution like 5% baking soda and water with a pH around 8 to 9 can help neutralize the acidity of the venom. You can also make this yourself using simple household ingredients. Yes, mosquitoes like biting people with type of blood. They like the flavor of type of blood. They also like sweet blood. Avoid excess sugars. However, a was sting is a different story. The venom from a was is slightly more neutral with a pH of 6.8 to 6.9. To treat a was sting, you would use a mild acid like apple cider vinegar to balance the pH of the sting site. Sand fleas and spider bites introduce saliva or venom into the bitten area which can cause cellular lightest necrosis or an allergic reaction.

They do not respond to pH correction. Please avoid vinegar or baking soda as they can cause burning and itching. Boys in ivy, Virginia creeper and pH balance. Another interesting personal experience happened during the COVID lockdown. When I challenged myself to clear out the poison ivy in our backyard. Boys in ivy contains yirushiyal, an oil that irritates. I mixed vinegar with water to calm the irritation which neutralizes skin pH and relieve the itching. This remedy worked instantly for me and it worked for my husband as well. Boys in ivy, boys in oak or boys in sumac itch and inflammation can be relieved with baking soda. Baking soda, sodium bicarbonate, has mild anti-inflammatory and alkalizing properties. It helps neutralize the acids in the skin that cause itching and burning sensations. When applied as a paste, it can help dry oozing blisters and reduce weeping.

The mild alkalinity doesn't neutralize the skin surface. It calms and reduces redness. To make a baking soda paste, mix three parts of baking soda with one part of water to form a thick paste. Apply gently to the rash. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Then rinse off with cold water. Repeat two to three times a day as needed for relief. Baking soda bath, add a half a cup to one cup of baking soda to lukewarm water. Soak for 15 to 20 minutes to reduce widespread edging and discomfort. Pat dry, don't rub. Important note, baking soda doesn't remove the erusial oil. The compound that causes the rash, use soap and water immediately after contact to remove the oil. Avoid hot water as it can worsen, itching by increasing histamine release. If the rash covers a large area, affects the face genitals or shall sign them infection, pus-wellened fever, seek medical attention.

Broughted with a colloidal oatmeal, kalman lotion or witch hazel can be used alongside baking soda. Whether it's vinegar or baking soda, changing the pH of the affective area can work wonders for soothing the skin. Virginia creeper has groups of five leaflets and contain needle, like oxalate crystals, also known as raw fights. A small percentage of the population finds contact with it irritating. I'm one of the gifted ones with this trait. I was unaware of its nature when weeding, its rash felt like poison ivy. Luckily vinegar neutralized it quickly for me. Fire coral and jellyfish things. Fire coral isn't coral, it's a type of stinging hydrosome that releases nematosis. Tiny venomous stingers into the skin, causing burning, redness, swelling and rash-like wealth. My first and last experience with a fire coral sting demonstrates how vinegar is a city can soothe skin reactions while scuba diving in the Bahamas.

And I applied a 50-50% vinegar alcohol solution. This immediately relieved the pain by neutralizing the nematosis. Stingers that hadn't fully released yet. After that experience, I wore a pair of long James for scuba diving in warm areas which protected my legs. Vinegar, acetic acid, about 5%, is one of the best first aid treatments for unavoidable jellyfish things. Which also have nematosis. It works by neutralizing unfired nematosis, stinging cells on the skin, preventing further damage. Do not use vinegar on a Portuguese man of war jellyfish sting. Vinegar can cause more venom release in some cases. Instead, rinse with seawater and use hot water for pain relief. The tricky part is knowing what kind of jellyfish you were in contact with. You can be in a catch-22 situation if you don't recognize or see what attacked you. You're in trouble if you do or don't do anything bigger in everyday life.

More than just a simple kitchen stable. It's a remarkable household item that extends our beyond its culinary uses. Vinegar's acetic acid properties have made it a go-to remedy for everything from neutralizing odors to cleaning. Let's explore some of its uses. It works well as an all purpose cleaner. Combine vinegar with water and essential oils for a natural solution that kills bacteria and deodorizes surfaces. Use vinegar as a final rinse to restore pH balance and remove build-up from hair products, baking soda, sodium bicarbonate, works as a gentle exfoliant to slough off dead skin cells or dry flaky skin. Reducing inflammation can soothe razor burns, mild burns, and irritated skin. Cools and soothes sunburn skin by restoring the skin pH and reducing inflammation. For example, used diluted vinegar, compressed for sunburn relief helps balance the skin's natural pH,

which is slightly acidic and removes excess oil. The cautions always dilute vinegar, especially apple cider vinegar before applying to the skin to avoid irritation. Vinegar has deodorizing properties. Vinegar's acetic acid breaks down odor molecules instead of just masking them. It neutralizes alkaline odors and breaks down odors causing bacteria and mold. It absorbs and neutralizes strong odors, especially from alkaline substances such as smoke, pat, urine, sweat, pat odors, removed mildew from clothes, and even neutralized cooking smells. Lace a bowl of vinegar in the room overnight to absorb unwanted smells or simmer vinegar on the stove, to freshen up the kitchen or any offensive smell around the house. A family member recently noticed her cat behaving oddly. He was persistently thinking and playing with his genitals. Concerned, she took him to the vet. Her worries were dismissed as overreacting. But she trusted her instincts and sought a second opinion. Next veterinary performed a urine analysis and discovered that the cat had excessive crystals, a painful condition that can become dangerous if untreated.

This experience underscores the importance of understanding urine health. Not just for humans, but for our pets too. The science of pet urine pH. A healthy urine pH in pets typically ranges between 6.5 and 7. When urine becomes too acidic, below 6 or 2 alkaline above 7, it creates an environment where bacteria, crystals, or stones can form. Leading to discomfort, infection, or urinary blockages. Diet plays a major role in urine pH balance. Cats who are strict carnivores naturally have more acidic urine around pH 6 to 6.1 due to their high animal protein intake. Dogs on the other hand are more omnivores, eating both animal and plant foods, which keeps their urine pH within 6 to 7. Certain medications, hydration level, and stress can also affect pH balance.

Persistent changes are symptoms like frequent urination, licking, straining, or blood in the urine should always prompt a veterinary visit and urine tests, neutralizing pet urine odors naturally. Understanding the chemistry of urine is also key when cleaning the accidents at home, because not all pet urine behaves the same. Predog urine tends to be less acidic, which makes white vinegar an excellent neutralizer. To remove all dog urine odors, saturate the affected area with a 50-50 mixture of white vinegar and water. Allow it to dry completely. Sprinkle baking soda over the spot and let it sit for several hours or overnight to absorb residual odors. For stubborn stains, you can mix baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and a few drops of dish soap into a paste. But I was spot test first, as peroxide can lighten some fabrics for cat urine. Cat urine is more acidic and contains urogasted crystals, which are notoriously difficult to eliminate.

While baking soda can temporarily absorb odors, it does not break down the urogasted itself, meaning the smell may return, especially in humid environments. To treat cat urine effectively, blot up as much fresh urine as possible, apply an enzymatic or ammonium-based cleaner specifically designed to break down the urogasted acid. Allow it to air dry fully before repeating if needed. These biological cleaners work by digesting the urogasted molecules rather than just masking the scent, providing a more permanent pet safe solution. Final thoughts, just as in humans, a pet's urine can reveal a lot about their inner health, monitoring changes in odor, color, or frequency, and trusting your intuition when something feels off. Can make all the difference, balanced diets, proper hydration, and alternative care are the best ways to maintain urinary health and harmony at home.

How is white vinegar made? White vinegar is made by fermenting distilled alcohol, usually from greens like corn or barley malt. The fermentation process creates acetic acid, which gives vinegar its sour taste. The amount of water added dictates its concentration for consumption or cleaning. White vinegar is safe for cooking, pickling, and food preservation. However, consuming large quantities can lead to digestive issues or throat and stomach irritation, so limit consumption. Fruit vinegar, such as apple cider vinegar, malt vinegar, apple, lacquern, raspberry, quince, and tomato are also produced. Apple cider beginner is healthier if it contains the mother. Vinegar's effect on protein. It tenderizes tough meat. Vinegar's acid breaks down meat's collagen and muscle fibers, making it tender. It also denatures proteins, helping the meat retain its juices.

The acid from lemons and limes alter the proteins in fish meat. You can cook fish without heat. So if you're on a fishing trip and run out of propane, you can cook with lemons or vinegar. Vinegar's acids separate the solid curds from the liquid weight, in milk, which is how cottage cheese is manufactured. Vinegar can help digest rich proteins. Vinegar increases egg protein hydrolysis, promoting digestion and producing antioxidant peptides. Salmon poke and churvice are some no-cooked fish recipes where the fish is marinated. I've tried Salmon poke. It's quite good, actually. For protein and boiling eggs, and a cap full of vinegar, to enhance the cooking of the protein in the egg, a quick diagnostic test to see if your body is passing protein through the urine is to add vinegar to it. If it becomes a cloudy white, your urine has protein in it, which is not a good thing. People with multiple myelona, a form of cancer, demonstrate this.

Get checked by Dr. Mizl Eastern and Mediterranean cooking techniques. Use a quick baking soda and vinegar marinade to tenderize meat, especially for kabobs and grilled dishes. Rinse thoroughly under cold water, pat dry, and season or marinade as usual before cooking. This technique helps create juicy tender meat without altering the flavor too much. It's a non-toxic fluoride-free way to create a protective barrier against acids, sugar, and bacteria. Doing frankincense gum, raw Boswellia resin, has been used for centuries in the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Asia for oral hygiene. And science is starting to support this practice. Oral health benefits of frankincense gum. Antibacterial inhibits harmful bacteria like streptocactus mutants. Anti-inflammatory supports gum and oral tissue health, saliva stimulation,

spuffer oral remineralization, fresh and spread naturally, natural resin with no added sugars or chemicals. Welcome back. While normal drinking water has a pH of 7, which is neutral, alkaline water has a higher pH than regular tap water. It typically has a pH between 8 and 10. Some brands claim that it can neutralize acids in the body, boost metabolism and slow aging. There are two main ways alkaline water is produced. Natural spring water becomes alkaline by absorbing minerals like calcium, potassium and magnesium as they pass through rocks. Artificial alkaline water brands ionize water using electricity or add alkaline compounds like baking soda to raise the pH. This is something you can do yourself. Alkaline water has become popular and suited for its health benefits. There is limited scientific evidence supporting many of the claims, like slowing agents or detoxifying the body. Drinking alkaline indirectly improves skin health because hydrogen skin has improved elasticity.

Hydrating with alkaline water after intense exercise is more beneficial than regular tap water. Do not cleanse with alkaline water on the skin. As it disrupts the skin, natural pH does alkaline water improve health. Some claims it reduces bone loss that research is next. A high mineral alkaline diet, not just water, may help. Alkaline water is safe to drink but not a mere cure. Does it counteract the acidity of other foods and beverages? Regular filtered water is just a scope for hydration and health for most people. Drinking carbonated water, which is slightly acidic, does not make your body more acidic. Because your kidneys and lung regulate pH by removing excess carbon dioxide. However, frequent consumption of acidic beverages like coffee, fruit, teas, energy drinks, sport drinks, fruit juices, soda and alcohol

with a pH of around 4 or lower can erode to the mammal, leading to cavities and sensitivity. Additionally, high intake of acidic drinks, especially soda containing phosphoric acid, has been linked to lower bone mineral density, but potentially increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures over time. What is ketoacidosis? Also called diabetic ketoacidosis, DKA, is a dangerous condition. Whether the blood becomes too acidic due to a buildup of ketones. It is not the same as ketosis, which happens on a ketogenic diet. Ketosis is a normal controlled state where the body burns fat for fuel and produces levels of ketones. This happens on a low-carb diet, fasting or intense exercise. Ketoacidosis is a medical emergency where ketones build up too much, making the blood dangerously acidic.

Mostly occurs in type 1 diabetics, but they lack insulin. Sometimes type 2 diabetics develop it because of insulin resistance. Insulin helps the body use sugar for energy. Without insulin, the body burns fat to aggressively creating elevated blood ketone levels. This makes the blood to acidic, which can cause serious harm. Ketoacidosis makes the blood to acidic, lower pH, which can affect organs in the body. Alcoholism can also cause ketoacidosis, ketosis versus ketoacidosis, understanding the risks. As we explore pH about health, it's essential to understand the differences between ketosis and ketoacidosis. Both conditions involve the protection of ketones, but they differ significantly in terms of safety. Ketosis is a normal metabolic state during low-carb diets, the fasting or intense exercise.

However, ketoacidosis, a potentially dangerous condition occurs when ketone levels rise excessively, causing the blood to become dangerously acidic. Uncontrolled diabetics exhibit ketoacidosis. How amino acids affect body acidity? Meat proteins are made of amino acids, vegetables of amino acids, and can be classified based on their metabolic effects. Arginine, lysine, and histidine are basic alkaline amino acids, which produce more alkaline byproducts and help neutralize acidity. Aspartic acid and glutamic acid are acidic amino acids, which generate acidic byproducts during metabolism and may contribute to a slightly more acidic environment. Selfer containing amino acids like cysteine and metathione can generate sulfuric acid when metabolized, potentially, contributing to acidity.
