The coalition, called Standards for Publisher Usage Rights or Spur, includes the Guardian, BBC, Financial Times, Sky News, and Telegraph Media Group. They warn that AI tools like chatbots are built by scraping news articles and archives without permission or payment, which hurts the business model that funds quality reporting. Leaders from these companies sign an open letter calling for fair licensing deals worldwide, plus tech tools to protect content and track its use. Some members, like the Financial Times and Guardian, already have licensing agreements with firms such as OpenAI, and they hope this effort will set a standard for the whole industry to thrive alongside AI.
