UK Cracks Down on Illegal Delivery Riders

0:00On March 14th, Home Office Immigration Officers and Metropolitan Police raided a caravan site in Bromley early Thursday morning, just after 4. 30 AM. They arrested 18 people, 9 women and 9 men from Brazil, Poland and the Czech Republic for overstaying their visas and working illegally as delivery riders. Investigators found these individuals were standing in for legitimate gig economy drivers, handling food deliveries without permission to work in the UK. This highlights growing concerns over illegal labor in the fast-paced delivery sector. Officials are sending a strong message that illegal working won't be tolerated, with ramped up enforcement to remove those without legal status. Border Security Minister Alex Norris emphasized surging activity to deter migrants, while Inspector Kelly Griffith vowed round the clock checks. Eight of those arrested are now detained awaiting removal, and the other 10 face-strict immigration bail during ongoing probes. Until recently, gig companies weren't required to verify workers' rights.

1:04The government plans to fix that, with a new border security, asylum and immigration act, mandating checks for zero hours and delivery jobs. Penalties could hit 60,000 pounds per worker, plus director bands or up to five years in prison, tightening rules across the board.
