Here's more Birmingham news for March 10th. Drivers on US 280 a mountain brook should brace for full overnight and weekend closures starting later this month. The Alabama Department of Transportation plans to shut down all lanes in both directions at Palm House Road for bridge demolition as part of a major, widening project. The closures kick off at 11 p.m. on Friday, March 20th, weather permitting with eastbound lanes staying closed until Monday morning March 22nd. Westbound lanes will reopen each morning at 5 a.m. and close again at 11 p.m. with everything fully opened by 6 a.m. on Monday. One key change from past work is the eastbound off ramp to Palm House Road which stays closed the entire weekend. Officials expect big delays and strongly recommend alternate routes to avoid the mess. For eastbound drivers, take Lakeshore Parkway to Interstate 65 then to Interstate 459 and back to US 280. This bound folks should reverse that path.
This is all to expand US 280 to 4 lanes each way from Lakeshore Parkway to Interstate 459 boosting capacity by this fall. Expect one more full weekend closure soon to wrap up the bridge work.
