Two Sisters Drown at Watkin Pools: A Tragic Reminder

0:00On March 4, two sisters drowned last June at the scenic Watkin Pools in the Riri National Park in North Wales. Hodra Zahid, A.S. 29, and her sister Halima Zahid, A.S. 25, had gone there for a short paddle but slipped into deeper water. Neither woman knew how to swim, and rescuers later pulled their bodies from the pools. The sisters, originally from Pakistan and living in Ratharam, were master's students at the University of Chester. They traveled with three male friends along the Watkin Path toward the summit of Irwitfa, Wales's highest mountain. After about 40 minutes, the group split up to respect the women's privacy for religious reasons, with the sisters heading higher up the pools. When it was time to go, the friends called out but got no response. They found Hodra floating face down and pulled her out but couldn't locate Halima right away. A local resident helped with CPR, and the Landbearer's Mountain Rescue Team recovered the second sister, though both were pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem confirmed drowning, and the corner ruled out any foul play or third-party involvement, recording accidental deaths.
