From the streets of Birmingham to the world, this is Birmingham News today. Sean O'Brien, president of the Teamsters Union, just endorsed Senator Mark Wayne Mullen for Secretary of Homeland Security. President Trump nominated the Oklahoma Republican to take over from Christy Noam, who started in the role at the beginning of his second term. Trump shared the news on social media Thursday signaling a quick change at the department. This endorsement stands out because back in 2023, the two men clashed hard during a Senate hearing on labor issues. Tensions bowled over from an online exchange where O'Brien challenged Mullen directly. Since then, they've turned things around and built a friendly rapport. Mullen has described O'Brien as someone who pulled himself up by his bootstraps. They even shook hands publicly at another committee hearing last October, and O'Brien now says Mullen is ready to protect America. Thanks to our sponsor for supporting today's coverage.
