Truck Attack on Synagogue: Motives Unclear

0:00On March 14th, a 41-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen from Lebanon drove a truck loaded with fireworks and flammable liquids into a synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, on Thursday, around 12.20 pm. The man, Aiman Muhammad Qazali, crashed into the building, got stuck in the hallway, and started shooting through his windshield as police fired back. His truck caught fire during the exchange, and he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Meanwhile, the synagogue filled with smoke and flames from the explosives in the truck bed, but firefighters quickly contained the blaze. Officials described it as a targeted attack on the Jewish community, with a large reform congregation thankfully having no students or staff. Seriously hurt. A security guard was struck by the vehicle and hospitalized, but expected to recover fully. About 30 officers also sought treatment for smoke inhalation. Officials who knew Qazali from his job at a nearby Middle Eastern restaurant, called him friendly and hard-working, shocked by his actions.

1:02The timing came just days after an Israeli air strike in his Lebanese hometown, killed two of his brothers, who had ties to Hezbollah, along with his, niece and nephew. Qazali had lived in a Detroit suburb with a big Arab-American community, owned a home there, and was recently divorced. People investigators had flagged his phone contacts, with known Hezbollah members back in 2019, after a trip abroad. As they dig deeper into his motives and background, the focus remains on preventing any further threats like this.
