Trinidad and Tobago's government just want approval from the House of Representatives to extend the state of emergency for three more months. This comes as the country battles a surge in crime. Lawmakers passed the two motions in a 26-12-vote late Friday night. The emergency gives officials extra powers, like making arrests and searches without warrants. It's designed to help tackle the violence quickly. The nation has been under this measure for about 10 of the last 14 months. It starts with an initial 15 days, but can be renewed as needed. Opposition leaders are hitting back hard, saying the government has not fixed the crime problem despite these steps. The ongoing alerts have hurt the tourism business too.
