Toyota Recalls Highlander SUVs for Seat Lock Issue

The defect means the seat backs might not lock properly, which could fail to protect passengers during a crash. This affects 2021 through 2024 models built from March 31, 2021 to November 10, 2023. The issue comes from a supplier flaw in the recliner mechanism that lets seats adjust and lock. Sometimes, the teeth do not fully engage, so the seat back stays unlocked in the first position, though it works in others. No injuries have been reported so far, but Toyota has seen 18 warranty claims linked to this. The risk is higher and crashes at faster speeds, where the seats might not hold occupants in place. Toyota spotted the problem during a routine check at their plans in October 2023. They launched this voluntary recall in February 2026 after further investigation.
