Todd Monken's Browns Tenure: One-Year Step or Long-Term Vision?

About this episode

Daryl Ruiter and Ken Carman evaluate Robert Mays' assessment of Todd Monken's hiring, weighing the potential for a Bruce Arians-style success against the risk of a short-term placeholder role. They analyze the organization's history of quick dismissals and debate whether Andrew Berry and Monken can lead the franchise into their new stadium in 2029.

You don't want to think about this,

but you know the reality of it. You know the reality of trading six for Jay. No, Jaylin Hertz. No, no, no, no, which real quick, John came flying in here. He barges in here like Kramer and Seinfeld. And he goes, hey, Carson Wentz just got traded. Did he get traded or resigned with? He signed with Vice. Okay, and he goes, J.J. McCarthy, I'm gone. I'm not doing it right now, not interested. Nope, they made the mistake. They can lay in that mistake. I remember when they were like, you really in the first round? Even Keith, big Michigan guys like, yeah, I don't know. And people were like, oh, you should see how he throws people open on third down. It's my problem is every time he seems to struggle, oh, he's on the injured list. It's like, well, are we gonna, we gonna own up to our problems here? Do we really have injuries? Like, which one is it? Maybe it's all bad luck. I'm not sure. But Robert Mays from the athletic, he was on the midday show yesterday. Gunbasket and Films, longest running show here. And he was talking about Todd Munkett. Not what, you guys are gonna hear it. He ain't gonna like it.

I don't like it either. But we have to accept the reality of the situation. Robert Mays, go. I think Todd is a really good offense at football coach. I think he's been a really good offense at football coach for a long time. I think there are two different ways that this could potentially go, as I think about the archetype of coach that Todd is, and how this season might play out. The best case scenario, and I've made this comparison since he got hired, like I think if you're a Brown fan, the best way that this can work out is that this is like Bruce Arian's 2.0, where you have a guy that is a long time assistant, waited for his chance and surprises to people in terms of how good of a head coach he ends up being in his 60s. The downside of this, and I think the worst case scenario is, is this one of those kind of interstitial hires for a bad team, where you're hiring Todd Munkett as a step to hiring your head coach. That's gonna be here, as you really kind of pull yourself out of the muck. And I don't know which one of it, I don't know which one of those it is. If you told me that this was a one year thing, and they're looking for a head coach again next year,

just based on the current state of the roster, the level of quarterback play they're gonna get, that wouldn't surprise me at all. But I have enough respect for Todd Munkett and where I absolutely can see the other path working out, where the offense is a little bit better than we expected. You're maximizing the players on that side of the ball, and you can talk yourself into the idea of, okay, when we get a quarterback in here, we do think this is the right guy to oversee that process. I think every radio show host in this city, or at least on this station, I think a lot of, I would be willing to imagine, you can never say 100%, I'd be willing to imagine 98 plus percent of Brown's fans would agree, it would be very silly to go through all this rigging moral, Daryl is in for tone today, by the way, to go through all this stuff that's been going on here, where you took a month to find a head coach, which find that might be normal, but we were going through all of it with all these young guys, we ended up picking a six-year-old head coach, you ended up picking a head coach just having for one year, to have some of the same big pieces that you have,

not get rid of the general manager, mind you, and just have a guy for one season. It would be all time silly, and maybe dumb, stupid, to only do it for one year. And I don't believe, Daryl, that the Browns have any intention to just keep it in for one year. I don't believe that, I think that, I think this is at least a two-year deal. I know you guys call me a water boy, well, yes, yes, but I know a lot of people call me a water boy fine. Ever since that Rob Chitzinski deal went down, they like to over-correct mistakes, the Browns, ownership. This is true. They held on to Kevin for a longer period of time, they gave you more time than what any of us wanted to give them. But they hit the jack button quickly on Freddie Kitchens, they hit the jack button quickly, Freddie was warranted, it's called what it is. Yeah, I agree, I'm just saying though, like, yeah, they tend to find themselves caught

between, you're running on quickly, or taking too long to move on. But I know that they've been pretty sensitive to that type of things since Chad especially, because you know, that goofball tried to sell them on Jim Harbour or whatever, which whatever. So I think that they do not have any intention to do it, but we also know what the NFL is, and this isn't just the Browns guys, this is what the NFL is, because a six-year-old coordinator, Vic Fangio was a six-year-old coordinator. I thought Vic Fangio got railroading, and he did. And he was in and out very quickly in Denver. A worse case scenario would be David Cully, who was a 64-year-old. I don't know if he was ever a coordinator. They made him a head coach, and you know, they tried to say the nice things about him, but it was basically, you're here as a placeholder until we can get our affairs and order about all this stuff and move on. Right, and then look at some of the young guys that they talked to. They were the young up-and-comers that just aren't ready

for that job just yet, but don't forget those names, because you're gonna hear them again. I'm not gonna sell it as he's gonna be here for the next 10 years, but I'm not gonna sit here and really give firm discussion to the possibilities that it can be let go. But if we don't think that this team's gonna be very great, if we think it's gonna be a five to six-win team, Daryl's willing to say eight. I'm just carrying the positive one on this show. If he wins eight games, he's staying, like that's fine. But if they win five or six games, the offense is still terrible. Like if you haven't shown any progress, and I'm gonna bring the other thing in, depending on what you wanna do at the quarterback position, that's a very powerful family. And I think a lot of people drew the same conclusions about the five-year rule change of the draft picks or what the Browns wanted to. I think that's one piece of it, which is the biggest piece. It's a very powerful family. They may be, they may very well decide.

I mean, John El, the whole reason John Elway stayed out is because he didn't wanna play for Frank Kush. And they may very well decide, you know what, we don't, or they may very well like him. So there's, Brian worked his way to the Browns. Yes, there's plenty of scenarios here where I think it'd be ridiculous. But yeah, we gotta go and we gotta talk about what could possibly happen if it were to happen later on in the year. It's a, I think it is a possibility at some point because we all watch the NFL. We all know how the league works, man. You all know it. Todd Munkins not gonna be the head coach when they open the stadium in Brook Park. I'm convinced of that. I, I, I don't see him being here. Really? I don't, I don't see Todd Munkins being the head coach when they open that stadium. Boy, I was calling you Mr. Posit of all of a sudden. I don't know if that's Mr. Posit. That's three years from now, Darryl. 29, right? Four seasons. Four seasons. Four seasons. Wait a minute, seasons from now. They open it in the 29 season. Yeah. Correct. 27, 28, and then the 29.

Well, yeah, but there's three seasons till season four. So it's three years, three seasons. They'll get three seasons. So you would be going into his fourth season. Right. I, I don't think he gets to his fourth season. Why not? I just, I, I, I just think that his job right now is to put this thing back together. And if he does win, then yes, but I, I'm not convinced that they're going to win at the level that will prompt them to stay the course. They thought they should have won seven or eight games this past year while scoring less than 17 points a game. Think about that for a second. They couldn't score 17 points per game. And they thought that they were a seven or eight win team. Only one five. But I know, but they should have beat Tennessee and they should have beat the Jets. Right. You winless teams at the time, right? You like Carson, Carson Wentz walk you down the field in London.

Okay. In the, in the final couple minutes of that game and, and blew that one. So now I disagree with their premise. I think there are five, there are five win team and they're, they're miles away. But they feel, hey, should, should a one seven, eight games last season. So I kind of feel like that is the bar for Todd Munk in this year. Go win those games this year that Kevin couldn't last year. That's the step forward. And then what's the next step after that? And then the next step after that would be next year. Okay. Get beyond seven, eight games. You got to win mine maybe 10. Like you said, you got, you got to show some linear progress here. I think the goal this year is to win the games. You didn't win last year. And then the goal next year becomes now get beyond that. Take that leap forward and think that they can do that in that year in 2027. I, I don't think so only because I would make him a two year head coach. Right. And that's why I said, I think he's, I think this is a two year, a two year plan.

You see where you're at after the two years. If you're going in the direction where you feel good about things, he gets a third year. If not, then some of those names that we heard over those 24 day period, when they were doing their great head coaching, Odyssey, then you're going to hear those names come up again. Odyssey app for you. Odyssey app. Do you agree with him? Do you agree with this? I, I don't know. Cause I, I think I, I think I, I think I, I think I, I think he makes sense, I'm afraid to say it. But I don't know that I can 100% agree with it. I do think Darryl's on to something. I think Darryl is on to call him an idiot for that. Well, no, no, it's a, it's a fair enough opinion. That what that's what I'm thinking. I'm like, man, because it, it seems to be, they, it's like they thought it out. Darryl. They did not set up the hiring, they thought into it and have a one year thing and just fly by the sea of their pants. I don't think that they did that. And I think he will be more organized and he will get at least two years. I think you're right about that, Darryl. The question is does he get the third or the fourth?

I think also it has a lot to do with where does Andrew Berry fit into all this as well. I think Berry say for at least two years, he had, he had, he had, he had such a good draft last year. Now nobody wants to hear you say that, you know that. But he did. Those are the facts. Now he had awful drafts the previous four years and that was my argument like, okay, great. You had one good year. What about the previous three to four to let you here? I just, I want to spend it a second though. If Berry makes it to the new stadium, just Todd make it. Does that help Todd more? No, because I don't feel like that Andrew Berry and Todd Munketer joined at the hip the way they told us the Kevin Stofansky and Andrew Berry. Well, that might be a good deal. Does that make sense? I think, I think, I think we saw that last, the day that they, they traded Joe Flacco, we all found out that hip was not as, you can join to the issue. Well, I'm saying for four, for four or five years, that's all we heard about which how Kevin and Andrew were doing a little more truthful now with, with Todd Munketer's

head coach. I think you're right about that, which could be good for Todd, but it also could be bad for Todd. I'm so used to being agree with you. Am I this morning that I believe on Brown's fans? I honestly, I got into a motor. I was so used to being mad and disagreeable with everything the people were saying that I'm like, no, Kenny, what Darryl is saying is making a lot of sense here. It's like, yeah, you get back on track this year and then you go in the next year and if you can't get back on track or you can't get further next year, but the issue is what you just brought up with the Andrew Berry. See, I don't mean to be a, I don't want to be a liar, I don't want to be duplicitous here. Second time I've used that word today and ain't going to do it again. I don't want to be conniving, but when you tell a Brown's fan that he, his job has to be safe for two more years, I agree with you, I said the same thing. I also know that I don't know if I trust him to make that pick for that quarterback if things go, hey, why are here with our quarterback situation right now? I don't know if I trust him to make the pick for the one tackle or the top wide receiver. As of right now, I don't trust him. I can only tell the truth. I don't trust them to make that choice. So if I don't trust him to make that choice, I still, in this is so greasy, I hate to

do it. It's not just about window treatments. It's about you, your style, your space, your way. I have to make him believe that everything is going to be fine for the next two years

because I don't want him coming to me with hair-brained idea. Eventually, you got to be the owner and you, when fans say they just want their owner to get out of it, it's just because the team's losing, okay? But when the team's losing, who do you want to take over to make the decisions to fire the coach, to fire the general manager and to start training this thing over? And direct the service check. Exactly. And because, and we all, this is firmly believed about the trade and everything about who put them up to it. And then, yeah, they went and they guaranteed it, but who put them up to it? People want Andrew Barry to pay for that. But you got to step into let him go. But you also have to know that who do you trust to make that decision? Bronx fans don't trust him to make that decision, but I can't have him coming up to me with hair-brained schemes to try to save this thing to dig out of the problem that they have, which I keep preaching about. You mean like training five years worth of graphics? Oh, sorry. Too soon. But that isn't a dig out of the hair-brained, or just a hair-brained scheme, because I'm going to bring in a guy and he's going to have no first-round draft picks or no draft picks over the next time in a year or just going to, well, is his career going to be five years?

He's going to get to the end of that, but the time we can't make picks. Two, one, six, four, seven, four to below 92. I got people who want to get in on this. We will get to you. And a former Cleveland Brown, a fan favorite. You guys love this guy when he was here. He was very critical at Kevin's to Fansky in a podcast yesterday and you guys know what I think at Kevin? I don't want to agree with what Jarvis Landry had to say. I have to. I'll tell you why in five minutes on the fan. At Blinds.com, it's not just about window treatments. It's about you.
