Titans Release Safety, Eyeing Byard Reunion

They released Center, Lloyd Cushion Berry, traded defensive tackle to Vandre Sweat, to the New York Jets for Edge Russia-Germain Johnson II, and quietly cut veteran safety Xavier Woods. Woods had signed a two-year deal just last off-season and logged 526 defensive snaps as the number two safety behind a Monty Hooker. That move leaves a gap in the secondary, especially with Hooker and Kevin Winston Jr., as the projected starters. Both have dealt with injuries. Hooker had a down year, and Winston missed time as a rookie before landing on injured reserve. Teams like the Seattle Seahawks are using three safety packages more often, so the Titans lack the depth and reliability right now. A reunion with former star Kevin Byard makes sense as his deal with the Chicago Bears winds down.
