Thune's DHS Plan, Democrats Push Back

On March 25, Senate Majority Leader John Thune calls the latest Republican plan the best

way to end the 40-day partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security.

The proposal would pay most agency workers, like those at airports, but leave out funding

for immigration enforcement which sparked the standoff.

Republicans are waiting for a response from Democrats who have not weighed in yet.

Thune hopes both sides can wrap this up soon as the shutdown drags on.

Democrats are pushing back hard, demanding limits on immigration raids and deportations

after federal agents killed two citizens in Minneapolis.

House Minority Leader Hakim Jeffries says the offer falls short and wants immigration officers

to follow standard police rules.

Lawmakers should stick around Washington until they strike a deal this week.

Jeffries added, meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer plans to send the counter-offer

pack with major immigration reforms, keeping talks alive as pressure.
