It's September 4th, and on this day in 1888, inventor George Eastman received a patent for the shutter mechanism of his revolutionary easy to use role film camera and registered the Kodak trademark. Measuring just three and three quarters by three and a quarter by six and a half inches, the handheld camera came pre-loaded with 100 exposures and eliminated the need for heavy glass plates and specialized knowledge previously required to take photographs. More than 5,000 cameras were sold in its first year. Surprising fact, Eastman created the name Kodak because he liked the letter K and wanted something easy to pronounce. Also on this day in history, in 1886, a patchy leader Geronimo surrendered to U.S. government troops. In 1957, Arkansas troops blocked the Little Rock 9 from entering a segregated high school.
