Here is what happened on March 1st. Today, black students still make up only about 10% of all medical school matriculants. But that wasn't even always the case. On this day in 1864, Rebecca Lee Crumpler became the first African American woman to earn a medical degree. She spent much of her career practicing community medicine in Boston. But after the Civil War, she traveled south to provide medical care to formerly enslaved

1:03people. Surprising fact, Crumpler also authored one of the first medical manuals written by an African American doctor in the United States and by a woman. Also on this day in history, in 1692, the Salem Witch Trials began in Massachusetts. In 1932, the 20-month-old son of aviator Charles Lindbergh was kidnapped from the family's New Jersey mansion.
