About this episode
Hello, and welcome to This Day in History. Here’s what happened on January 8th. With the U.S. national debt currently at more than $27 trillion and climbing, we look back to this day in 1835, when America's debt was completely paid off, a long-held goal of then-President Andrew Jackson. Jackson called the debt “a moral failing” and vetoed a number of spending bills throughout his tenure, putting an end to projects that would have expanded nationwide infrastructure.
