The WBC is going to make Red Sox camp unbelievably interesting, and there may be some opportunities

1:01here. What is going on, everybody? Welcome back to Red Sea Radio. My name is Corbin, and thank you very much for clicking on this video and happy WBC week. For those of you who celebrate WBC kicks off over the next couple of days. Following today, we've actually got a whole bunch of exhibition games where these teams are playing either MLB teams, or Japanese teams, or whatever Masa made his team Japan debut just earlier this morning. But regardless what this means, is that the Red Sox are going to have a whole bunch of interesting things going on in camp, because there's a whole lot of guys for the Red Sox that are not only just everyday players, but stars for this team, heading off and playing in the WBC, and that leaves a lot of gaps for this spring training, which is also going to lead to a whole bunch of opportunities for guys who are fighting for roster spots. For example, a guy like Christian Campbell, who we've talked about a ton this off season,

2:02is going to get a chance to make things really difficult for the Red Sox this spring. So what I wanted to do was kind of break all this down a little bit, because it's not just Campbell who's getting this opportunity, there's a whole bunch of other guys as well, and talk about how all of this could actually end up impacting the 2026 Red Sox. And I know we've talked about Christian Campbell a ton on this channel, and I know that we've talked about the fact that the WBC is giving him this really interesting opportunity that he wouldn't normally get in a regular spring training, so I'm not going to dive too deep into him, but I did want to sort of start there to refresh the minds as to kind of what I mean in terms of opportunities here, with Dorian, Roman Anthony, St. Don Rafael, and will you abray you, playing in WBC games this spring, and that means that there's quite literally no MLB starters playing in the next couple of weeks for the Red Sox, right? The Red Sox are planning on playing Christian Campbell in the outfield this year, wherever he ends up, where that's AAA or the Major League Club here, and well, with no one else really out there, he's going to get a ton of innings to play out there. But he is also in a position to take it and run with it.

3:04I don't really think he's going to be able to play himself into a starting role or anything, because that just simply feels impossible with the other guys that are on this club at the moment. But if he plays well enough, maybe he potentially plays so well that it forces the Red Sox into sort of creating this, you know, Rob Reffsnighter-esque role for Christian Campbell on the Big League roster, whether that's opening day or at some point this season, right? You know, with the loss of Rob Reffsnighter, you're looking for that guy who can mash lefties and kind of help you with the outfield just a little bit. Christian Campbell could take that over. Now, so far this spring had slipped in, I don't know what if I would say a Rocky starts three hits and 14 at bats, two of those hits or doubles, and you did get Rob this weekend, plus it's only six games, but it definitely isn't like the, oh my god, standout start that. I think Christian Campbell himself was expecting at the plate. However, again, you know, you're sitting here talking about it, it's like, okay, well, now we're at an opportunity where he's going to get, I don't know what, 10, 12 games of simply just him in the outfield, basically, right? So going to be really interesting to watch in terms of where Christian Campbell ends up after these couple of weeks, but again, if you're talking about top-town, looking for

4:05opportunity, Campbell is absolutely the number one name that I think stands out here. However, he's not the only one. On the position player side of things, there's actually another guy who could potentially take advantage of not really having any outfielders here, and that's Nate Eaton, who is in a very similar boat to Christian Campbell, mainly as the outfield is trying to figure out who is going to take on that Rob Refsnider style role with the Red Sox's season. I would imagine he's also going to get a ton of reps out there, and a ton of opportunities to show that he may be the name that the Red Sox need to kind of figure out how to fit on this roster instead of Christian Campbell. He, unlike Campbell, has had a bit of a hot start to this preseason. Five hits and 14 at bats, two of them also being doubles, build up on that enough. Who knows? Maybe he's the one that steals away this bench spot, right? So you sit in there and you're like, all of a sudden, it's okay, there's some real talent here that's getting a real opportunity this spring training. And it's not just the outfield that we need to talk about. Because I'm sure you guys already know this already, but Wilson Catreras also kind of took off this week in order to play for Team Venezuela.

5:07One of the bigger questions for the Red Sox coming out of spring training is who's going to end up as that backup first-based role, right? You kind of had that figured out coming into the spring where it was like, okay, it's going to be Romi, and then potentially eventually you end up with Tristan Cossus as well. But both of those guys have been essentially at this point confirmed to not be starting the year on the Boston Red Sox due to their injuries, and you don't really have a set backup first-basement at this point in time, which is why over this weekend, you saw some really interesting things. When you saw Isaiah kind of a lefa, take his first starting game at first base in professional baseball. He has yet to play a game at first base, which is kind of shocking to me, considering the fact that he's played quite literally everywhere else in the diamond, including catcher. So I was pretty shocked to get him played first base, but definitely a guy to be paying attention to over these next couple of weeks and how Alex Cora uses him on the field. If he starts to get a whole lot more first base reps, I think that's going to be a pretty big indication of where the Red Sox are thinking that this is going to end up. The other one, too, that we saw yesterday was Andrew Monasterio also getting some innings

6:09at first base. And again, another guy who doesn't really have a ton of experience over there. He's played a handful of games at the Major League level. It was only one game that he started, but it was about 36 innings total. And we know that Andrew Monasterio is a name that stood out really, really early on this camp to a lot of people, including Alex Cora himself, right? So if Alex is sitting there saying, hey man, if you could show that you could play a decent first base that Major simply lock up, that sort of utility spot that he's been fighting for. But that doesn't mean guys like Nick Sogard are fully out of this picture as well. Sogard's a name that played a few innings for the Red Sox last season, specifically it was 12 games at first base last year. I feel like we haven't really talked too much about Nick Sogard so far this spring. It's mostly because he hasn't gotten off to the greatest start in the world at the plate. But again, this is going to give him a whole bunch of opportunities to potentially do that, right? Andrew Monasterio has been the hot name, but can Nick Sogard do something about that? Can you play well enough either at first base defensively or get hot with a bat enough where by the end of this WBC thing where you've got a ton of opportunities to get him into

7:09games here, he's the name that's standing out to everybody. He's the name that everyone's sitting there saying, hey man, if he could figure this or this out, he's going to be a lock for that utility position as well. Obviously too, I think at some point we might see Tristan Cossus, but honestly I think at that point a lot of the WBC guys are going to be back. But honestly we really haven't talked about first base all that much, so this is going to give us the opportunity to kind of focus on that while the big dogs are playing elsewhere. And speaking of battles that we haven't really talked to a ton about in terms of specifically how the WBC affects it is the rotation, right? We've talked about the rotation in general a ton on this channel, and we all know that there is a pretty big battle brewing for who's going to end up in that fifth spot. In this rotation, well, the Red Sox may get an interesting opportunity here to really kind of show these guys off a little bit to either the club or the front office or whoever it may end up being in terms of that fifth spot. Because we've also got some missing pieces in there as well, Brian Bales heading to the Dominican Republic to play and Ranger Suarez just made his last start in Red Sox uniform before he goes and placed for Venezuela.

8:11Now, this one's kind of interesting, right? Because obviously you're not going to mess up these guys' schedules too much in spring. You don't want to mess them up, going into the regularly season and kind of like trying and force them into the spots that are missing here in the rotation. So you're still going to probably see these guys around the same time here. But one thing that's incredibly interesting is that over the past couple of outings, both Conley Early and Peyton Toley have been able to get their in-game reps out of the bullpen, right? You're seeing them come in relief of a guy like Ranger Suarez, a guy like Gerrero Crochet. With both Bayo and Ranger Suarez missing here for the next couple of weeks, you're probably going to see Conley Early, Peyton Toley, them get some actual rotational spots this spring which could, again, lead to one of these opportunities to allow these guys with massive potentials to potentially shine enough where they make an interesting case for that fifth spot in the rotation. On top of that, too, when we're talking about the battle for the fifth spot here, it sounds like Patrick Sandvall's ramping up fairly quickly. He's done a few live batting practices at this point. The next step is really just to simply get him into games during the spring here, and

9:13he's been incredibly impressive. Alex Cores mentioned it a couple of times now, and again, you go back to, hey, Brian Bayo's not going to be here, Ranger Suarez isn't going to be here. Do we have an opportunity to maybe throw this guy into a game, give him one or two innings here, and see how he kind of looks in sort of in game action this spring, and maybe again, potentially earn himself that fifth spot. Cutter's a little bit further behind, in my opinion. Cutter did have his first live batting practice session this weekend. Alex Cores really thought it was impressive, but again, you got to do a couple of those before you get into live game opportunities, but at the same time, if Bayo or Ranger Suarez with DR Venezuela end up going pretty far into this tournament, you do have the opportunity to put Cutter into this rotation as well for a little bit, which could actually really help the Red Sox determine who is going to be that number five starter come opening day. Overall, I think the WBC has the opportunity to be unbelievably cool, right? Not only do the Red Sox have this opportunity to really kind of put some of their specifically young players in the spotlight globally, right? I mean, Roman Anthony for US, say Don for Netherlands, you've got Willier for Venezuela, right?

10:17These are some of the young stars in the Red Sox, and they're going to be names that are going to be publicly broadcasted all over the world over the next couple of days. There's real opportunity here for some Red Sox players to make a name for themselves. I mean, Mossa in his first exhibition game went yard, and it was a huge moment earlier this morning if you guys were up and paying attention to that. So yeah, you sit here and say, okay, this could be great for not only Red Sox fans, not only Red Sox players, but the Red Sox themselves. The other part of this, and I think I hopefully did a good job highlighting in this video, is that it also really impacts how the Red Sox are going to go about this camp over the next few weeks. There are a ton of question marks surrounding this team right now in terms of where they're going to end up landing, come opening day, whether it's in field positions, whether it's positions in the outfield bench spots, rotational spots, bullpen spots, there's question marks all over the place, which is by the way, pretty normal for spring training. This isn't, oh my god, the Red Sox have bad roster construction or anything. It's just simply how most spring trainings go here. So the WBC affords this, the Red Sox is really interesting opportunity to get some of these

11:17guys in here that maybe you don't normally get in, especially in starting roles at this point this spring to really kind of determine some of these things, whether it's hey, can this guy play well enough to make an impression good enough for the Red Sox to kind of be forced to make a decision on them, or whether it's hey, we don't know what's going to go on with this spot, maybe this is an opportunity to figure it out. This could end up being a real pathway for the Red Sox to make some of these decisions that they've been either putting off or not being able to figure out early on this spring.
