For years, astronomers proposed increasingly exotic explanations—overmassive black holes that violated formation theory, primordial objects from the Big Bang itself, physics we didn't yet understand. Then, in January 2026, a team of scientists revealed what was actually hiding inside those little red dots: not impossible physics, but an extraordinarily effective disguise made of dense ionised gas that had been fooling our measurements all along.
