Yeah, and the reason they have to bring a quarterback in is at a cut rate is because they are still dealing with the ramifications of that curve cousins deal. Remember, he's getting $10 million from the Atlanta Falcons this season plus there is the cap hit. So they have been in a situation where they really can't spend on a quarterback, which obviously is why this new regime is in there. So get to it, have them be the sort of stop gap. If he has to come in and start a couple games, maybe a month into the season, while Michael Panics recovers from the Torrey ACL, that's fine. Meanwhile, Kevin Stephanski had Dylan Gabriel last year. So he certainly does have experience in the realm of lefty quarterbacks.
There's a lot of lefty quarterbacks we're talking about here. Lefty lefty here with Tua and Panics. Hi, noon, Jones and Keith here on WEEI. Are you ready to legally tap her? Ready. I'll tell you what, a rap sheets clip there with all the lefty quarterback talk. Pretty much tells you what's going on right now. It has begun. Not a whole heck of a lot yet. Who was that? Shang soon. Shang soon? Yeah, moral combat. He was letting you know that the moral combat had begun. Got it, got it, got it. It has begun. He said, ready to legally tap her. One of his great lines. Yeah, they can legally tap her because they weren't before. They weren't talking earlier. Now's the time. Fones are busy right now. The one update since we last went to break. The 49ers, according to Ian Rappaport, are now said to be open. That's just so many caveats already. They're said to be open to trading pro bowl left tackle,
Trent Williams, source to say, if the situation doesn't get resolved, resolution has not been easy with Williams. He's frustrated with the process. He's due 32 million in salary with a 38 million plus cap number. He's an old horse. Oh, he is. 38. Yeah, he's 37 right now. Okay. He'll be 38 for the upcoming season. Okay. So like, but he's, is he still the best tackle? Maybe. The guy, the guy is awesome. No, I mean, if the Patriots were serious about eventually moving Will Campbell, this is the kind of guy you'd move, even short term. Yeah. What Williams have a year or two? Yeah. This is the kind of guy you would kick Campbell inside for. I don't think they're going to. No, I don't either. But just to give you an idea, the caliber player he is, I, I was assuming he was going to get released, but I guess the Niners are going to try to trade him between now and Wednesday. We'll see. Yeah. I wonder what kind of trade it would take to get him because of the age? Like, he's so good for what he is. But it's not like you're getting Max Crosby and you're going to have him for a number of years. Yeah. I mean, I bet. What do you think of mid-round pegs? Yeah. Yeah. Something like that. I bet most of that is the Niners getting that number off the books. I would guess. It's odd because you're like, are do we want to slow down the development of Will Campbell to kick him in for a guard,
just for a minute, and then just to like. Ladies and gentlemen, in and under this belt, this is breaking news. Okay. If you want an Alec Pierce, Patriots fans, you're not getting him. Adam Schefter, Indy Lanz's top target free agent wide receiver Alec Pierce returning to the Colts, four years, $116 million. Insane. That's according to McAfee, I guess. McAfee broke that news. Oh, he did. Does he know anyone with the Colts? Schefter shut it him out. Okay. Great. Okay. Sounds like roughly a million dollars to catch. 29 million a year. Big, some big catches there. Honestly, thank goodness. I did not want him. It sounded like the Patriots were in. He never even left Indy and Apple. So the Colts have paid him and Daniel Jones. I don't worry about the Colts. Say that much. I think I think a pass will be okay there. How do you give up most of the first round pitch? Yeah. I was going to say, how do you get one of their first round picks? Answer, you don't.
The Jets already had. Wow. Honestly, the Jets. Look out for the Jets once those Colts picks start paying off. No, this is good because then even if you thought Alec Pierce was good, at least it's with the Colts, which to me are sort of like a non-threatening team. Yeah. They have a good start, but it's not like he joined Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes. And you're like, well, maybe, like maybe with those guys, he'll be really, really good. I think he's solid. I think he's, I don't even want to say overpaid because it's free agency. So he's just paid. Like it's your turn to get paid. He's probably the best or one of the best available wide receivers, but the best guys don't become available. They don't not in their prime like this. He already would have been on the team or whatever else, but they keep them. They got to pay through the nose to keep them, but they do. So to me, no harm, no foul. Now it's even more of a, all right, it better be AJ Brown then. Yeah. Agreed. So look, here's what I don't want. There were a lot of you who wanted Pierce. We did not. I'm fine with this. Sexor's steaming about it. Are they? Yeah. Pears to Indy. Well, the one guy he's swearing, he said he's upset. People wanted Pierce. F.
He says, Pierce is staying with the cold. The hard F. So like, here's what I don't want to hear. And this includes Patriots, beat writers, but specifically fans. Like, I wanted Alec Pierce. I wanted Alec Pierce. I pay whatever it takes to get Alec Pierce. You see the numbers. You're like, wow, it's too much. Good, good riddance. It's like, no, no, no. No, no. You're a big steaming. You liked him. Yeah. Yeah. He's like, he's like, he's like, Pierce is a perfect fit for Drake. May. May is a perfect fit for Alec Pierce. He's mad. He is he? Yeah. All right. Good. His tweet, quote, screaming, crying, throwing up. So he's mad. Good. Yeah. No, he's mad. Pierce is the highest paid free agent receiver in history. Okay. That's just how it works. So, uh, rap sheet of some of these numbers. Let us know. Are you happy? They missed out. Or are you pissed? Six, one, seven, seven, seven, nine, seven, ninety, three, seven. Rap sheet says it was 114 million guaranteed. Is that a little different than what, uh, McAfee had. By the way, Pierce is on McAfee right now. Yeah. Yes. Uh, wait. So did McAfee break the news? And then a second later. I get. I mean, I, I guess we think waiting on holes.
He's like, so by the way, let the guys know. By the way, this is ridiculous that you blow out your whole show just to do a one-on-one with Alec Pierce. That's this year's free agent. It's like, good get by him. I'm not hating. Yeah. That says a lot about this year's free agent class. No, I know. But like, you're like, hey, guys, we got out. We're breaking Alec. No. We're dominating the Alec Pierce news cycle. That says a lot about this free agent class. I could be wrong, Jones. You know, there's a first time for everything. I don't think Alec Pierce is the top 25 wide receiver in the NFL. We were kind of kicking that idea around last week. And if like, you know, he had a thousand yards last year. But you can't just go in order of guys with yards. No. Something guys were either hurt or they had maybe a horrible, even worse quarterbacks or whatever. I think in the same exact amount of yards as AJ Brown last year. I think they both barely cracked a thousand yards. A thousand yards was also over a thousand. You got to pick and choose which guy you like. No, but Pierce or AJ Brown is not even close. It's not even close. And they had the exact same numbers. So, yeah, I agree with you. We had a text earlier, just one texture. But he said Pierce is a top eight receiver in the league. That's crazy. He might not be a top eight receiver in that division. I'm telling you, I don't know what everybody sees in him and what they like about him.
He catches the deep ball. That's great. But I don't know. I don't think he's the best on his own team. I was going to say, I like Pippin better. Yeah. I don't even hate Josh Downs, but whatever. So, this is rap sheet. Free agent, wide receiver, Alec Pierce agreed to terms to remain in Indy on a historic. He says four years, 114. That will make him the highest number here. Receiver in NFL history. The deal was negotiated by Mike Swenson and CJ LaBoi. You know who texted rap sheet. And it came together overnight and contains 84 million in guarantees. 60 million fully guaranteed at signing and a maximum package. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Of 116 million. So, there's the discrepancy between him, chef, or amography. Kashan Pudi used to be like, I can probably make a lot of money now. Highest paid free agent receiver. Not receiver, but the highest paid free agent receiver in NFL history. Alec Pierce, that just tells you it's an overpay. Well, it is, but it's free agency for you. The next couple of signings we hear about are probably going to be guys that are overpaid. But because most guys, you know, we're talking about Gonzalez getting a big contract soon.
Like, I'm sure the Seahawks, when they can, are going to get to Jackson Smith and Jigba, and make him the highest paid receiver, right? Or like Pukin' Akul or all these different guys. They don't get to free agency, typically. And if a team doesn't think they're going to keep them, usually they trade them. The cults kind of played this one a little bit differently. Like, they didn't extend them before. They didn't franchise them. And then they ended up just signing into a massive deal. And so he stays with his team, but it just went about it in a different way. Okay. So now it's the eggs are in the AJ Brown basket. Allie Pierce again, resigning with the cults if you're just tuning in. You can weigh in 617-779-793-7. Neither of us ever wanted him. No. But we're kind of in the minority. It seemed like most people we talked to, most Patriot beatwriters, a lot of fans wanted the guys. So they got to be a little steamed about that. So if it's not AJ Brown, what's the other guy? Well, and I was just going to say, Pierce going back to the cults on top of DJ More to the Bills, on top of, and it's a different position, but Max Crosby for two firsts to Baltimore. Baltimore was allegedly in on AJ Brown.
The Bills were in on DJ More. The Patriots were in on Pierce. So it's like, now everybody's kind of running out of options. The only other team I've really even seen linked to AJ Brown was the chargers? Is that right? Yes. So, I mean, I would imagine Pierce going to the cults hearts the Patriots leverage a little bit. We started the show saying, I don't think Roseman has a lot of leverage. DJ More getting dealt didn't help to the Bills. I guess the Patriots releasing Diggs when they did hurt their leverage a little bit. This probably hurts them a little bit. If they don't get brown, I'll just bring back Diggs. It's not going to happen. But I'm just saying for me, if I was putting the receiver room together. And if they brought him back on a reduced number. Yeah. I'd say, hey, I wouldn't have played that hardball with him, but credit to you, you ended up getting a better deal. Yeah. If they don't get brown, I would say the exact same thing I want Diggs back. He probably won't, right? He'll probably, like, if two teams off for the same thing, he'll take the other team because he didn't get cut by them. Listening to recent breer, that's not their pivot. It's Alec Pierce, AJ Brown or the tight end, Isaiah likely and Chica Conquo. If it's not AJ Brown, I hope you like those two names at tight end.
Eeks. Unless the Patriots deem that too rich for their blood. Well, it's going to come down to AJ Brown, obviously, because that makes you feel a whole lot better. You cut Diggs, but you got brown, great. You didn't get Alec Pierce. You got better. You got better. I think you're better than that. And then even not getting Max Crosby when a player like that was available, you're like, all right, that would have been a lot of draft capital to give up. So if you get AJ Brown, I would, you'd be like, all right, you're already often running for what could be back-to-back successful off seasons for Mike Raible. But until that happens, we're just sort of in this holding pattern. Yep. So we'll continue to watch this. I would imagine that, yeah, the AJ Brown news should be, and it could be drawn out closer to Wednesday. It could be. But I would imagine that's going to now develop. And I would say the Alec Pierce thing being out of the way. Now the Patriots don't have to sit around and wait. So now it's AJ Brown or bus. Let's see. Dianna Rossini tweeted, teams that were interested in Pierce included. Yep. The Patriots. Oh, Raiders.
Yep. Chargers. Yep. And 49ers. Hey, y'all, it's Kelly Clarkson with WayFair. Ever order furniture online and wonder, what if? Like, what if it doesn't fit? A little to the left. Wait. Yep. But most have a strong belief that peers would ultimately return to the cults. Peers, yeah, turn down more money elsewhere to stay in indie purchases. Okay, hometown discount of four for one-sixteen. Who was dumb enough to pay that guy more money than that? Why would he not go somewhere else? I don't know. I think every team has a better quarterback, except maybe the Raiders, but then you'd have to say, do you like Mendoza more? Maybe. Right, I think that might be all those guys have a better spot, but he just likes the city of Indianapolis, I guess. So, I would peer stand there.
What do we got? We got more cooking. Wow, we got cooking? Yeah, I'd say yes. I say yes, Nick. I say yes. Let's do it. Hit it. Hit it. Okay, according to Tom Pellicero, the Patriots are, quote, unquote, closing in on a deal with veteran edge rusher Dremont Jones. Ooh, any relation? No, not really. Okay. Dremont Jones was in Tennessee. Did he get, he got traded at the back? He did last year, right? Okay. So, he went Baltimore? Not with Rable. He went Denver, Seattle, Baltimore, Tennessee. Is that the award? Not with Rable. Not with Rable. No, not with Rable. He started with, he was a third round pick out of Ohio State. I don't know. Maybe does he go all the way back to that? Oh, I don't know if he does. Maybe. Rable was actually at Ohio State like a long time ago. But he is 29 years old, former third round pick. And last year had seven sacks,
four and a half with Tennessee, two and a half with Baltimore. Okay. They, well, Pellicero refers to him as an edge rusher. He's six, three, two, eighty one. Is he, that feels like a more, that's not just a pure edge player. Is it? No, it seems a little heavy to be just on an edge player. But, I mean, not as big as big mill or bomb. No, no, no, no, no. No, I mean, that's for sure. Well, he wore number 41. So he's a stand up guy. I like that. Yeah. I like that. I mean, if, if Pro Football reference has his weight right, that just feels, I mean, a lot bigger than injury in those guys on the outside. He also has the number by the way. Three for 39. Three for 39. For Jordan Schultz. I mean, sorry. For Dremont Jones, a quarter. Yeah, career highs and sacks last year was seven and pressures with 55. You know, it's great. You played 18 games last year. That's cheating. It's too many games. Good point. He had 55 pressures. Yeah, he's getting after him. I guess. Yeah. 24K. He can't get home. That's a lot of pressures. My God. Got to the quarterback a lot last year. Okay. So is he like a Harold Landry replacement or a chase on replacement or anything?
He's like, yeah, what is he? Well, he's probably one of at least two names there. So that's similar to what I was going to ask. Like, all right. They make a splash on Dremont Jones, three years, 39 million. Let's say he is a pure edge Russia. I would imagine there's some versatility there, but let's see. Does that mean they're sitting out like the real top end players there? You know, Hendrixson and Owe and Maffe and guys like that. Is he closer to those players than I realized like where are they actually shopping? But three years, 39 million is not nothing. That's a commitment. No, not nothing. And like, you're trying to beef up the defense, you know, which was already great a year to go, but you had some holes there. So you look at the guys that were able, really on both sides, but if you want to say specifically defense that they sort of targeted last year, obviously Milton Williams was the big money guy. Like Robert Splane and Cheson was in addition, Landry, Carlton Davis. So like they've done a pretty good job adding to that side of the ball. So he knows what he wants.
And so I'll take him as word for Dremont Jones. Why not? They went from zero edge rushers to one. Yeah, I'll take it. I'll start somewhere. Rapsheet does add. It's three years, 39.5, he says. He says he gets 14.5 million in year one. So I don't know how much of that is signing bonus guarantees, et cetera, but that's what Rapsheet just added in the last 30 seconds or so. So okay. When Burt Breyer says they're clearing the decks by releasing Jolani to buy, I'm like, well, what the heck are they clearing the decks for? And what are they actually going to do? Well, you released to buy you trade, Bradbury, both of those save you some money on top of digs being released reportedly last week. I still don't know how official that is, but you know, but in terms of the actual transaction. But he's out as well. That saves you money. And so is this what they're clearing the decks for? Do they have more in play? And when Mike Raible says when I find something that I want, I tend to just buy it. This feels like a quick and decisive splash for the Patriots again, Dremont Jones. Last year in Tennessee, and Baltimore split three years, 39.5 million according to the NFL
network. He was traded in season for a conditional pick. So either a fourth or a fifth. So that's what he goes for. Yeah. Okay. I think a fourth run pick in season for like a half a season, fourth run pick. Okay. I would say that's viewed pretty highly. Well, I would say that's, yeah, I think it's a good player or at least it's a decent commitment. Like I didn't necessarily expect him to spend 40 million right at the first gunshot illegal tampering. Did you? No. So I mean, I don't know if that means this is their guy and they're going to sit out most of free agency. Good. No, because if I think when they strike quick, they tend to have a bunch of deals ready to go. It's kind of been they, I mean, it's only one year with Raible. It's definitely Raible's history. But even in the Bella check years, like when they were quick, it was like a lot of moves all at once. I feel like it was just 2021. It was pretty staggered. Exactly. How quickly they went and signed, you know, two tight ends, defensive players, wide receivers. Like they, they went crazy right away. This is a little bit different. But also a lot of the big names linked to them or I should even say linked, but just sort of, you know, connecting the dots are traits.
So I think that might come a little bit later on. They're still trying to hammer out those trades. Alec Pierce was like the big name free agent that they were kind of connected to. So once that didn't happen, I'm like, no, I did not expect them to spend a ton of money. But can't say they're not doing anything, you know, they're active. Right now, we're only talking about a few teams making moves as it shows right now. So good for them. Okay. Good. They needed an edge rush. Sure. That's a bigger commitment that I expected him to give, you know, 15 minutes into legal tampering. So we'll continue to follow this six, one, seven, seven, seven, nine, seven, 93, seven Dremont Jones in three years, 39 and a half million Alec Pierce back to the Colts for four years, either 114 or 116. So he's out. What does that mean for AJ Brown? And what does all of it mean, Keith? Yes. For Christian Gonzalez, we can get more into this 100 million guaranteed for Trent McDuffie, which is more than some of the other big commitments over the years at corner. We have been telling you about this Derek Stingley got about 89 million guaranteed a year ago, last March, sauce gardener got 85 million guaranteed in season.
Pats or Tan got 78 million going back to the 2024 opener, Denzel Washington, Denzel Ward rather, not Denzel Washington, Denzel Ward got 71 in change from the Browns a few years back. So McDuffie blows that number out of the water. Yeah. And you know, mego tweeted out about a half an hour ago, she said for all the hamming and hawing over the prices of extending Christian Gonzalez or signing a free agent, the Patriots have freed up a lot of money between digs and to buy and Bradbury. So some of that's gone now with Dremont Jones. But as Rhys said, all of this is is kind of hanging over what the Patriots are going to do. And that's something I have to think about because that number I'd imagine just went up. Certainly for me, I didn't think McDuffie was going to get 100 million guaranteed. Now he has, they have to factor that in with all these deals. You kind of have to start the negotiation out 101. Now, I don't know if you have to go 10 11 north of that. So that's what McDuffie got over stingly. That's also a full year later. So if you just factor in like how much money the leagues making and it's a new year free
agency, look what Alex Pierce just got. So the money's always going up. I don't know if you get that kind of spike after a week, you know, that I think that might be a whole season, but I'm sure Christian Gonzalez and his camper are going to be asking for 110 because I think everybody acknowledged Gonzalez greater than McDuffie. Good player. Really good player. Better by the Rams. But I think Gonzalez is better. He's probably not as good as Sir Tan, but is more in that realm and two years ago, Sir Tan signed for 77 and a half guaranteed or that's two years ago. So that the price as we know is gone way up. There are three guys right now making more money than Sir Tan. So it's not even a, well, the best player, you're not going to make more than the best player. Yeah, you are because it now is your time. So I just, I'm curious now because some of the beat writers are sort of alluded to this. Especially Mike Reese where he's like, how is Gonzalez's camp going to handle this? And I thought that at the time was a little strange and I was like, well, he's just put three good years on film.
He just had a great playoff run. What more does he need to do? If he sees McDuffie signing for 100 and he says, well, I'm worth 115 and they're like, Oh, they were reluctantly going to give you 100 or maybe even, they were probably they get 90. Yeah. Obviously, they're like, all right, we go, we'll start at 90. He's like 115. Like Duffie got his deal. I was thinking 90 that time. Stingley because 90 would have been the highest paid. So now you got to be pissed at the Rams. First of all, they did this. And so yeah, how much higher are the Patriots willing to go because my guess is Gonzalez won't settle from any less than one, one 10, well, even as Reese wrote over the weekend, he says they're strategizing around an expected mega extension for Gonzalez. So all of this has to work within that framework, listening to my grease. So what's the plan here? It appears off the board. He's back with the Colts, Dremont Jones in. That's an edge rusher who spent last year in Tennessee and Baltimore, seven sacks a year ago. That's one move they made, three years, 39 million. So they're not going to sit on their hands and sit this out.
It doesn't feel like how many eggs are in the AJ Brown basket. How does it all fit in to a potential extension for Christian Gonzalez? We can get to it with all your phone calls, six, one, seven, seven, seven, nine, seven ninety three, seven legal tampering underway throughout the NFL, including here in New England.
