The Madison Preview: We Think We Know What the Tragedy Is

0:00I hate to point this out at us, but this whole podcast is sort of like your mind. Hello, Edison! Hello, Billy. I also apologize for anyone who's listening to the podcast and is going, is Addison Good? It sounds like I've smoked a whole pack of cigars or cigarettes. No, unfortunately, I am a victim of Nashville's allergies. My body is not transition well doing the cold in the heat, so bear with me this episode. For those of us who have joined us in the chat, go ahead and over the course of this conversation, let us know what cartoon character Addison sounds like today. That's money. Best answer wins. Nothing. But... Best answer wins. Maybe I have to do the impression of whatever it is.

1:00I don't know. I probably don't know it. Yeah. Not with that voice. Not with that voice. No impressions on this one. All righty. Well, we're going to dive into not only the Madison today, but we're going to touch on a little bit Marshall's episode two, and you will appreciate Billy. I actually really enjoyed episode two. I say that because... Episode one, I said this is stupid. The show's taking shape. I don't know. You got to give a show a first episode. Don't you like it has that clumsy sort of getting to know you time? But yeah, the show is definitely taking shape. And when we get to talking about Marshall's, there's some interesting quotes from cast members about what's to come. I think the show's going to kind of take some hard pivots in a way that kind of steers it away from your typical CBS procedural. And things I'm pretty excited about. And then there were some things that happened during the episode that I'm pretty excited about as well. Same. I don't know if we're excited about the same thing.

4:06I'm blanking out her name at the moment, Ariel Coybel, Cooble, his her name, Bell on the show. That's the movie that they were in together. 50 Shades, Freed, the Kinky Drama, starring. What's her name? See, I don't know. I've never... I... Dakota Johnson. Dakota Johnson. Oh, Dakota. Okay. She just did a Calvin Kleinhead. Yeah. She did just do a Calvin Kleinhead, which I thought I was probably getting in my Facebook feed because I was researching the 50 Shades as well. And I just thought it was one of those things. But big congratulations to our winner. I have notified that person. I think via email, if my mind recalls right, and we'll be in touch to make sure you get that t-shirt. 5:06It's where you can send your trivia answer later on in this podcast. But already, let's dive into the Madison is going to premiere this week. And I am so excited. There's a lot from this movie to sort of look at. And as I sort of dove into it, I found some pretty intriguing cast interviews. And let's start off sharing some pictures from... This is pictures just from episode one of Madison. And we can kind of look at them here as we talk. It's a lot of character introduction, Michelle Fyfer with the family. We see a little bit of Matthew Fox's character. Matthew Fox plays Paul Clyburn and then their daughters. So a little bit of backstory here on what this shows all about. You have Madison. You have Stacey and Preston Clyburn played by Michelle Fyfer and Kurt Russell. They're married couple and tragedy brings them to Montana. I've since figured out that Paul Clyburn has played by Matthew Fox. He actually lives in Montana.

6:06They go visit kind of regularly. That's how they know about this space in the Montana Valley, the Madison River Valley. But after this tragedy, whatever it is happens, everybody goes out there for a visit. And the rest of the cast includes Elle Chapman, who is a daughter page. She's married to Patrick J. Adams, suits. If you watch the show, suits, you remember Patrick J. I did not either. And then Bo Garrett is another daughter. She's divorced and she brings her two kids with her. I believe it's Bridget and Macy. And then of course I mentioned Matthew Fox, who is single, never really has a girlfriend, has no kids, just likes to have a good time. And then Will Arnett makes a pretty interesting looking sort of cameo appearance throughout the show as a psychologist. These are all very interesting cast for characters. They'll be interesting to see if there is any drama. Like if this is too hallmarky, it could be a flop.

7:07So here's a little bit of, I have a theory on what happens. And in a minute here, I want to get to like my over because we don't know this tragedy, right? But as you watched those pictures and here, let me show a few more pictures. These are pictures from the rest of, I think this is them, I know, these are the, I'm going to have pictures from the rest of the series here, at least I thought it was. Yes, here they are, pictures from the rest of the series. And what's interesting to me about these is that Kurt Russell never appears with anybody aside from his brother, Paul. So in the trailer, the whole family is grieving some sort of loss, but Kurt Russell's character is always joking around, having a good time. Like he's not nearly as concerned about whatever this tragedy is as the rest of the family, which sort of leads me to believe that he's the tragedy, right? That he is the one who was killed.

8:08Right. You had thought that and you had thought that seeing Kurt Russell would be flashbacks. That was my way that. Maybe that. Maybe for a while. It could be that the tragedy comes partway through, partway through the episode or partway through the season, I think, because we do know Kurt Russell is not only involved in all six episodes of this first season, and that's right, it's just six episodes. He's involved in season two as well, which is going to come a little bit later. This if I have it right here, this is a trailer from the Madison. It's a scene that I wanted us to pay attention to closely. Memories. It's like a movie. We can play it over and over to revisit all those times. We did have together. What? All the talks, all the laughs, all the hugs, all the singles, all the hugs, all the

9:14hugs, all the hugs, all the hugs, all the hugs, all the hugs. It's not the same. She's talking. I didn't mean to play that much of it, but you get a sense. Do you agree? Does it look like maybe Kurt isn't involved in the grieving process? Yeah. Dang. He's in all six episodes. He is. Yeah. Confirmed photo from episode six. And he's done his fair share of media around this show. He said something pretty interesting to Entertainment Weekly. He said, I think it's a very different show for Taylor in that it's very female gaze oriented show. And I think it's extremely well written. It was fun to play. It was really fun to do. I just had a good time. What does that mean to you? A female gaze oriented show. Romance. Female gaze. Yeah. Yeah, I take softer and more maybe female leading because he hasn't, he doesn't have that.

10:18I'm trying to think of a comparable show and I'm sort of striking out, but maybe a comparable movie that was a romance or a heartbreak movie, a story of sort of self-exploration and figuring out who you are after tragedy. Like those kind of movies exist. I'm just sort of stumbling on titles at this exact moment, but that's sort of what it seems like the show is to me. I have one in my head with Pervanka Nick Jonas's life and I'm like also blinking. That's literally what happens. James writes a Taylor shared in Hallmark show romance and branding people. Well, all right, Chad's chiming in here and I don't know if this is true or not, Chad but I'm going to trust you. He noticed Paramount's going to release the first three episodes Saturday and then three episodes at the end of March, I'll likely watch all six once released. Why would they do that?

11:19Some shows do that. They just drop. Well, that's really going to mess up our podcast schedule if that's the case. I guess we'll find out this week. Yeah. I don't think I have time to watch three episodes at this show this week. I don't know if I'm there, but we might have to figure it out. We'll circle back. And I got to be honest, my wife's going to be out of town this week and I'm not sure I'm going to watch three episodes of this show by myself either. Like you can just imagine me like bottle of shardonnay, having a good cry. Have the end of the sofa by myself. It's Kurt Russell's character dies. Yeah, you need to watch it with your wife. I will be watching it by myself, but I feel like it's more normal for me to cry with the bottle of shardonnay. Here's some other things we know about the show. The reason why it's two seasons, and by the way, season two is not confirmed, but it's already been filmed. So that's confusing. So it's comfort. Do what you want with it. Okay. I think they just want to press it, right? You know, that big press release out there that everybody can talk about, which is pretty smart. So the show, a season two is confirmed.

12:21The reason they did it like this is because initially Kurt Russell's schedule wasn't going to allow him to be a part of the show. He was, he's part of another television show on Apple called App Blinking on the Name. Something, Monsters of Legacy or Legacy of Monsters, and they clashed, the production. So they came up with this idea, Taylor and Michelle Pfeiffer came up with this idea to sort of adjust the filming, break it into two shortened seasons, and then film it that way to allow him to be part of the show. So he wasn't available, but they changed things to make him available. That's a nice world, I wish people would just, you know, move life around to make it work for me. As they say, like, he's an amazing actor, he's put in the time. This reminds me of the conversation we had last week, though, about the rumor that Kelsey Azbil, not available. No, I know they, yeah, no, it's not available. Correct. Correct. I think that we're in play there, absolutely, to your points, like they could have made

13:25her available. Yeah. Matthew Fox has been doing quite a few interviews as well, and he talks about his role. And his character seems maybe a little bit of a hardened heart. I don't know. There's any sort of backstory there. My theory on this show is there is this tragedy. Here's what I think. I'm just going to go out there and tell you what I think. There we go. I think Preston Clyburn goes to Montana to visit his brother Paul. They have a great time. Then he gets on the plane to head back home to his family in Manhattan, playing crash. Boom. That's ugly. Keep in mind, the episode is called pilot, which, not that unusual, because it's episode one, right? And that is a pilot, but you generally don't call that episode pilot, as Taylor Sheridan never has. So maybe it's a little bit of a clue there about what's going to happen. Maybe the whole family comes back to Montana, and Stacy Clyburn finds herself taking comfort in her brother-in-law's arms.

14:26Maybe that's where our love story builds. Oh. Oh. I didn't see Helen coming. Gosh, you're calling my mom, where somehow she has this great discernment of movies and how things are going to end. And she'll be like, oh, Susie's going to fall in love with Johnny, and then this is going to happen. And then you're like, Mom, I want it to be surprised. Okay, Mom? You're that. Yeah. You're like, and then there's going to be, because it all may, as soon as you just said all that, I'm like, shoot. Yeah, that would be good. And then I'm going to be a little annoyed if it ends up happening. I'm not surprised now. Why do you like the thing? Well, I hate to point that out this out at us, but this whole podcast is sort of like your mom, and that we come up with theories and try to figure out what happens as the show goes along. But the one about her falling into the arms of her husband's brother. Shout out, Mrs. Hager. What's her name? Susie? I'm Shelley. Carol. Shelley, Shelley. Shelley Hager.

15:27We need to know about this show. It was all filmed in Montana and Texas. If you see some New York City skyline scenes, that's actually just downtown Dallas, Texas. And yeah, yeah, they wanted to save some money. Which is a typical for Taylor Sheridan show, pension pennies, all of a sudden. Yeah. I'm like, okay, I'm sorry, Dallas and New York are not one in the same aerial view. That's funny. I'm trying to trick people, I guess. And I think that is the extent of the production notes I have for this show. I'm excited about it. I mean, from everything, the way people are talking about it, it seems like it could be the best written Taylor Sheridan show of them all. Six short episodes, right? You know, sometimes Taylor's sharing gets a little loose when he's given too much work to do. That's when things start to fray. There's just six tight punchy episodes he wrote it all himself. Like the writing could be fantastic.

16:29And the acting is going to be there as well, of course, Michelle Fiverr's. Even if it is a female gaze oriented show, I'm just, I'm excited to watch it. Same. I'm genuinely, really excited. Should we kind of go through episode two of Marshalls? Yeah. Um, you said you liked it. How come? Well, two things. Wait, let me lower it while I find my notes. Um, okay, one, I love that the train station is coming into play. And I like, I think we're going to find out some mysteries there. Maybe that because Casey was really unwrapped, uh, unnerved a little bit and rattled. And so I'm like, okay, wait, what's down there that we could, that we could revisit. And then two, the Jamie plot of that he could still be alive, which I don't think so. We quite literally watched him be killed. But it made me realize I was like, I guess Jamie and them, I mean, I'm sorry, I guess Casey

17:33Beth and them didn't know, like he just kind of disappeared. I guess I always thought they, they threw them into the train station. I, that's what I figured they did with them. I mean, I don't know if it was ever stated or not, um, but I thought that was the case. Um, and so far, the rest of the Marshalls team doesn't seem to know that the zone of death is actually a real place. I don't know. Apparently it got its name because there's no citizens, no law enforcement, no judges or jury. So there's no way to prosecute crimes. The local legend has been a dumping ground for the region's most depraved criminals. There's no way that's true. No, dozens. They've been here for over a century. It's still going to pass down through generations. Oh, it's the first time hearing of it. It's got a good poker face, he's, he's, it look rhymes as a great actor.

18:38That was, that was good. Never heard of it. Clearly, he knew right where to take that body. I didn't understand why he had to hide that body. Like it was a little bit of a shady kill, but the guy was an Aryan who was about to bomb something. Why did he need to hide that body from the rest of his team? That wasn't clear to me. Because he shot him maybe? Yeah, I didn't fully understand that either of, if that was going to be the issue of finding the bullet or something that would trace him to Casey, I'm like, you should have just not killed, like just let the van implode in. Yeah, I guess that could have been the case. So things to come on that episode, there was a couple of yellow stone references. There was that reference to the train station, of course, that sort of dominated the episode. A lot of people making a big deal out of the mention of Rip early in the episode. Did you catch that? No. It's a conversation between Casey and Tate, and Tate wants to know who's going to take

19:42care of their cattle while Jamie, Casey is out being a US marshal, and he says that Rip found him a couple of hired hands to do the job until they can do something a little bit more permanent. I think that's a seed being planted to include those characters in this show at some point. I think you're right. And you had, you had guessed that at the very beginning, I said very beginning, this is linked up so too. So our first or three episodes ago that we did a little teaser, you had guessed that. You're like, I bet he shows up and maybe Lloyd. I think that as, I think that as Dutton Ranch gets closer to being a reality, that's one they'll try to work that cross promotion and find some way to get Rip. And Beth Kelly Rally's character involved in this show. Great. A lot of the drama from this point on, there's going to be some real tension between

20:45Cal and Casey about who's following, who's orders. And I read a good interview that Logan Marshall Green did with CNET, where he says there's going to be a lot of strife when Cal realizes exactly who Casey is and has become and what he's done since leaving the seals. And it's not so pretty. So a lot of those skeletons are going to come out of the closet. We already saw like a fair amount of that kind of tension in this episode as well with this scene. Kind of hard to operate when you got ghost hanging over you when there was definitely one on the up. Roner bringing them up like that, it's just a cheap shot. It was a cheap shot, it was a targeted one, and it kept history from beating itself. The mystery of Roner is something that we're going to have to figure out an episode to come,

21:47I think. I agree. I know I was kind of curious. I was like, oh wait, tell him more. Yeah. So the show, I mean, it's kind of laying down some long term plot episodes. It doesn't seem like it's going to be so much dependent like week to week, a new plot. There's a thicker thread through the season, I think, and hopefully that continues because it makes it a little bit more compelling. And then also that tension between the two main characters, I think it'll be pretty interesting. Someone asked if you need to know about Yellowstone or have watched Yellowstone to appreciate the show. And so far, no, me, I mean, do you think that you need to have watched Yellowstone to appreciate the show? So far, no, but if you do know about it, you know, like the train station and how Jamie died, it might wet your appetite a little bit more. Yeah, the backstory, I think, makes it more interesting. Is it essential? I don't think so. And I think it'll be less and less essential as the season rolls along. So what would you give episode two of Marshall's?

22:49You gave last one a six, I think. I give it a 7.5. I like to. What did I give it? What did I give last week? Give it a seven or did you give it an eight? We weren't. I give it an eight. I gave it an eight in terms of like your typical network premiere and I'm going to give it another eight. I felt it was the same for me. I'll watch another week. You know, I'm going to watch a few more weeks. I don't have the time my schedule to like commit to like a full network show, week in a week out. Like, and then plus all these medicines and then and then everything else, my kids want me to watch. And you know, like farmer wants a wife, woman, the bachelor starts a 20 second. Sure. Gosh, I can't miss me some farmer wants a wife. I'm good and busy, but I am so excited for the medicine. I didn't want to get demonetized, okay, it's like, just to hear you sing, that's Ashley

25:21Cook and she did a nice job just singing that song, she didn't have much of a role. No Riley Green yet though, right? No Riley Green and I do want to know, I like we should have Ashley on. I do want to know how Ashley came to be a part of the Taylor Sheridan franchise. She did a great job. I love that they had a little nod to the four sixes ranch. Did you see the, the neon sign on the top, top right of that scene? I was like, okay, little nod there, she sounded great. It's also fun to see. I mean, I interviewed Ashley gosh, when she, during COVID, when she had started the six one five house and it's fun to see artists who, you know, you, you interview then and then you see them now and that girl's killing it. It was a nice part, a little strange to have a ballad in the middle of a bar during a popular time, but I understand that the story demands certain things. So I'll allow it. I know it didn't fit the bar scene necessarily, but the song fit the scene.

26:26It did. You know, a little softer side of crews there, which I thought was pretty good. Think of. All right, that's it for Marshalls, we've touched on the Madison. I am ready. What's next? We're going to dive into some Q&A now, the first one, these all come from YouTube. The first one is Billy. You seem fairly critical of Sheridan and killing off Monica. If you have to remember that beyond the obligatory EP credit, Taylor has nothing to do with this show. Yeah, he's much more hands off of marshals than he has been as other shows, but I'm not believing that he's that hands off and has nothing to do with it. If he wanted Monica, yeah, continue, sorry, yeah, if he wanted Monica back, she would have been me. He forces the action. Okay, the next one is my opinion.

28:30It's no different than any other procedural show on network television. It just has a dutton and some other legacy Yellowstone characters. I'll keep watching for a bit to see if they reference any other storylines from Yellowstone, but I'm certainly not invested. Wolf. I do kind of wonder what some people who are critical of this show were expecting. It is on CBS. Like, this is a CBS show. It's not going to be as grizzly. There's not going to be cursing. There's not going to be any sex scenes. You're not going to see any of the main characters naked. You're basically guaranteed to in Yellowstone and Landman. It has to kind of fit that very tight, 41 minutes of action, 19 minutes of commercials sort of schedule. It is including now some of those elements of Yellowstone, but I think if you expected a CBS procedural setting Montana like it's kind of what you're getting and it's keeping up with all the others that CBS has on its channel. And personally, I'm here for it.

29:31Sounds like not everyone feels my same way, but I am here for it. Well, it's nice to be able to skip an episode too and not just feel lost, right? And that's always a problem with these eight to ten episode series is like you miss one episode and then you miss the second episode because of life and boom, like you're just out on the show and when do you ever get back to it, like, that's a lot of stress. I don't know about stress, but yes, I'm, I'm going to know what keeps you open at night. This last one says it's a four, nothing more. The four isn't going, the and four isn't why can't I not say it isn't going to miss. Okay. Thank you. I was like, wait, who? And four isn't going to show up on the Beth and Ripston off. He was bitching about on Instagram about it at one point and he wasn't on that he wasn't on any of the shows. Sorry. I really can read. I totally believe that Fiori J. Smith was complaining about it on his Instagram.

30:32I did not see that, but he does seem like the kind of guy who would feel pretty sour about getting left out and a tough break for four. So I guess he's given time, though, man, that Beth and Ripston shows just started. He's not going to be a regular, but he could bib in for an episode or two, swing by for it. Swing by for drink. Yeah. Or something, you know, maybe you simply didn't just shoot himself in the foot, but harsh criticism there for Marshall's a four. I think that is a little bit harsh. It's better than a four. It could be a five. Okay.
