What's your background with that? Oh, that's not The long story that I'll give you the short story um I was a graduate student at Purdue in the late 80s early 90s and

5:10Central Indiana was hit by a once and 500 year ice storm That blew the grid out completely for weeks Lafayette Lafayette, Indiana, I know it's a major metropolis, but most of us without power for two to three weeks And I noticed that people got really squirrely and for just four or five days, you know, following power trucks around Other power trucks are they needed police As for because people were harassing them blocking them Demanding that they turned the power back on though they couldn't So it stuck in my mind Being a graduate student in military history We had already discussed issues like you know energy weapons EMP and others So finally in 2005 I actually sat down and I started to write a book about it And so that's the origin of it You were way ahead of me. I I mean, I did study EMP as part of my interest in nuclear weapons in nuclear war

6:16And I was you know, I'd started writing about it, you know Even when I was in college. It's sometime in the middle of the last century, but But I I never really understood I mean, I did I didn't get dawn on me that just one or two or three nuclear weapons could just knock out the US. I didn't I didn't I didn't get that I was But that didn't I didn't arrive with that conclusion until Really several years ago, I guess, and that's what that's when I started working on the book but uh, you know um The big influence on me was Dr. Pry Peter Pry Oh Most of the report for the congressional studies in 2002 and again in 2000's Renate and uh, I I called Peter Pry my godfather It's work and then the congressional studies Reinforce to me early on just how frightening this webinars

7:21Well, I was very impressed with his work You know, it seemed like there was an effort to denigrate him that I could see in the press. Oh god Um I think it was a bit of a contributing factor to Well, it was pretty well in early departure from this world He had taken a second war again audience thanks and Peter came out with very good clear statements and Should we say some people on the left to don't want to agree with this we'll just tear them apart. It wasn't very very frustrating Well, what do you think is a root of this? Is it the vested interests that Or afraid they'll have to spend money to protect the grid and the infrastructure or You know, well, I mean why is there such uh, you know reluctance or even aggressiveness to fight the idea of protecting the US from EMP I I think uh, it's a great question. I know when I first got into this

8:24It was simply it seemed so fantastical That they couldn't quite wrap it around. They are they're narrowed Um, I mean, I remember being on a talk show early on when my book first came out out of Phoenix And this guy really denigrated, you know, I was wearing a tin foil hat Well, we were to a break and during the break they gave the weather forecast for Phoenix and they sent out High today of 111 tomorrow. It's gonna go up to 114 Back down. I said Let's assume even a small probability that what I'm running about is true How many people on Phoenix would be dead within the first 48 hours if we had a great blessing Yeah, and then and the guy was like The holy crap you're right You know I have to live without air conditioning and tens of thousands will die

9:24It took time. I think the majority of people now are accepting That there is a concern here Well, I saw one guy that was supposed to be a nuclear weapons expert that He just said oh well don't you know they they just missed the idea of nuclear EMP They said what you worry about is just you know a coronal mass ejection or Geomagnetic storm was you know people think of it as a solar flare from the Sun that would come down and would knock out the grid And of course that's one of the reasons why we should protect the grid, but I I in the course of doing my research for the book Um, there's a company called the Meditat Corporation that made your familiar with that Health phone and I corresponded with the Uh, the guy that's the president dr. Rodaski. He's written. I guess hundreds of papers on EMP I believe he helped write the guidelines for the department of defense Oh, I I felt like the information that I was getting from them was solid. I mean they did all sorts of research

10:29There's some really detailed technical papers that have you know photographs of all the different Solid state electronics getting burned up from EMP and But you know, I I also saw that the the utilities Formed this uh kind of a An organization to investigate EMP that came out with a study that just dismiss it You know, it's it. Oh, it's not nearly as bad as we thought and To hold for two minutes. There's something going on with my dog, but I'll be right back. Oh, okay I'll be back for sure. I gotta go into the backyard hang on the problem Well, I'll pretend I'm a show host again You know, I uh, there's a lot going on John and I often talk about Current events at the beginning of the show and then we get around to EMP Later on. This is an unusual day to have and for me to be able to speak with somebody who's a real expert on EMP You know, but um You know, I have a lot of concern about what's going on in the Middle East right now because the US is

11:32clearly sent um, we have probably 10,000 troops over there now And I read that the Pentagon has activated another 10,000 so You know, we're looking at a ground invasion of someplace. Whether it's some of the islands and the straight-of-harmos or maybe a port That's uh near the pull the straight or you know in the Gulf of Oman But I a ron has got a one million man standing army and they also have a million people in their malicious. So that alone Concerns me that we would want to go after somebody like that with um Of course, it would be you know 10 to 100 times smaller Um, and they Their missile cities haven't been taken out from what I can see because they continue to Bombard Israel every day every night and also some of the Arab states Um with you know ballistic missiles And we're we are just starting to feel the effects of 20% of the the world's

12:34petroleum that liquid natural gas oil and also 30% of the the fertilizer Particularly urea fertilizer in the phosphates come through the Gulf Um, you know, we've seen some rise on our gasoline prices, but we're not anything like The problems we're having are minor comparative Country like Taiwan for example has an eight-day supply of liquid natural gas. That's what they use to generate electricity there um But there's there's quite a few other countries Australia is just about ready to impose rationing for gasoline And this is the beginning of this process because The the straight, you know, it's not completely blocked the Iranians are letting ships go through But you have to pay a toll and you have to not be someone that considered to be an enemy to be able to qualify So at any rate, you know, that wasn't the case before the war started, you know There weren't any tolls charge and ships are going through so Um, you know, it kind of mystifies me that now the goal of the the war is to open straight Which was open before the war started

13:36I think I see a lack of real strategic planning there Well, I'm back Okay, it was a fair I was digressing into current events with the Iran, but you know I don't have a chance to speak with somebody who's an expert on EMP very often so Like always Well, um, it comes wandering through here almost every day It's So yeah Well, let's see At any rate, I was you know, I'd mentioned that I corresponded and worked with the doctor Redosky of the Meditate Corporation and and I feel like they're Their information is reliable and good And they use unclassified studies Right and but you know, I read that there's also the Russian and Chinese military texts Talk about super EMP weapons that have p to four times Yes, uh stronger. They call it incident E1 feels that's initial burst of

14:38Energy that's uh generated at the moment the nuclear weapon detonates Yeah, that's that's what knocks out the solid state electronics I do you you have any more information on that? That's super EMP weapons You know, it's been several years back, but I was invited out to Omaha Uh to give you really wow and I was meeting some of the you know guys who Will work in the area and we're sitting outside having a drink and ideas question and they'd stare up at the sky and they go Boy, it's a nice day out isn't it a classified information basically? Well If you're not answering me that means That what I'm asking as well. No, because it is a nice day out Uh Right Summized We're the world of hurt if we don't if we don't do some more proactive Efforts to protect ourselves from this

15:40Oh, yeah Well, I you know, we talk about the EMP shell device. That was something I stumbled on when I was doing my research That uh You know, I even if they protect the grid We still are as homeowners first still um Can it be at risk from EMP so I've but I I'm not paid to advertise that but I it seems like bill tells me the department of defense is the biggest customer for an empty shield so people that are Interested in protecting their own homes. Um, you might want to consider looking into that But um, so you know, maybe uh, I don't know why don't one of the things that you think about you know, I hadn't I'm not sure. I didn't really prepare to interview you because you know, I should have put um Absolutely. I'm interested in what you What your current thoughts are on EMP and what you think should be done, you know, what are the What do you look at when you think about it? Oh

16:42Let's just say that I learned a long time ago to compartmentalize it Because I'd wind up like Peter pry or some other people who are just obsessed over this Yeah, yeah, you're you're lying awake at two in the morning going what if this what of that but uh Is it real? Yes? Uh, the enemy pursuing enhanced capabilities. Yes um It's a guy that happens sooner or later Well The two things you you you're concerned about are one EMP and the other is CMA Both of them will happen sooner or later. It's just inevitable a weapon system has never been created That some fool didn't go out and try to make it work. Right. So uh Uh, we've been whistling in the dark uh, this has been a known entity ever since the early 1960s Uh, when we first fully realized it with the starfish prime test

17:46Which was lofting in into the weapon above gods and island in the Pacific detonating that and blew out part of the Hawaiian grid and then later that year the Soviet test. It's called Soviet test 184 Uh, were they blew out a power station and Kazakhstan 500 miles away from the point of detonation I think it's no coincidence that the test band treaty came in the following year I think EMP was the driving force behind that really it's interesting because it's too much of a coincidence Uh, we both we in the Soviet realized it in 62 and in 63 there's a test band treaty I wish a download bit further that a couple more of these tests were done publicly to Make the world aware. This is very easy. You don't need thousands of warheads to take out and upon it. I mean 10,000 Uh, targets hit and I ran so far in the last month

18:49Uh, wasn't it a bit easier just to give them a good dose of an EMP? I figured that might you know, I don't wonder if that was going to be the case I think that's right has been behind the curtain Um But then you show your hand if you use an EMP it shows you yeah You know, uh, and the test back in the 60s took place before we had all the transistors and saw say electronic. So They they're a million times more sensitive to EMP than the tube technology exactly that The sensitivity that's there, but it's inherently worse now Uh, you you know, or I think it could very well be a player someday would be Pakistan and India I mean, there's a lot of things in each other now I don't know if that's trying to and rush as much because it's matured your destruction And if they did EMP obviously we wouldn't even be that nobody wants

24:03And I'm talking here with Bill Forson About EMP and Bill Tell me about one second after that that's a Pretty impressive project I think I had wanted to do a novel on EMP I was since I had that it's the the ice storm and it and it shut down for the grid for central Indiana Right in 2005 Um I was at I teach at Monterey College. It's a wonderful Uh small college up here in the mountains of North Carolina We saw really on some of the things in cyber security issues But I was sitting at our graduation ceremony and I was up on the stage And it was 90 degrees out and the graduation speaker was drawing on and on and on

25:06I really like to do that. Oh god You know when I give graduation speeches and such I take it egg time or with me And I try for 10 minutes and I start off saying I'm turning this to 10 minutes and one of things I'm going to shut up and sit down. I always get a big obligation Because Something I mean this guy was going off at 35 or 40 minutes. Oh my god And it was 90 degrees out and I'm sweating the death and I'm looking at the audience And I call my god the god moment with folks Like I've slapped on the side of the head with a message. It was Do the book about them? What would happen in this small town? What about my graduate? What about the D day vet who sits in the front Rowan is a good friend So that was the origin of the book one second after And I wrote it in about a month or two it took four years to get it published

26:06And then it took off and We did they've done a movie and the movie will be out in about three or four months Well, that's very impressive. I think you may have quite a few more invitations once that happens well, I You know, I Worry about this exact same thing It's hard not to find yourself you know Obsessing over it when you you spend some time researching it Mm-hmm, but I just don't understand what the motivation is for You know like for example the utilities have had an active effort to try to defeat legislation and congress who would you know Have a national directive to Protect our grid and our infrastructure And I suppose the reason for that is that the legislation has been poorly written in the first place and it

27:08You know put the burden of the Protection on the utilities rather than the federal government Which is really foolish because we don't seem to have any qualms about printing you know Millions and billions of dollars every On a regular basis just out of thin air to pay for all the other things that the government was doing You know I Think the utilities some utility companies are finally starting to wake up To what's going on and good one of the big problems here is I call the expected expectation of normalcy Everything yesterday Everything's working today I'm the hell of worry about tomorrow. It's good, you know Well, I had the same Same experience for just talking about nuclear weapons in general. I was oh Yeah, it's an expert witness at side panels at the United Nations for a number of years But people would say well don't talk about you know everybody knows nuclear weapons are bad

28:12Right And I was like well Yeah, but you know, we've learned to live with them and That's a mistake because Like you said, you know, there's never been a weapon that's been invented that hasn't been used eventually and I think we're We may see that out in the middle east and the near future I think the way things are going it's very likely that there will be nuclear weapons use I I was like you I thought perhaps there might even use an EMP weapon at the outset there but it hasn't happened Thank God for a president who finally stepped up to the plate and acted proactively I think I ran would have had a nuclear weapon by now if we had not acted sooner And well, I think we don't have the end it's uranium and this is like there's a good chance they might You know, that's one of the worries. Yes. The problem is You know the technology has been around and the knowledge for many decades now In any country that wants to get nuclear weapons can basically. I mean we have Pakistan

33:28Well, uh, John has some interesting clips to introduce some of his segments and I think that's one of them You know, one of the things that I studied and about EMP was they have suitcase size devices that aren't nuclear weapons that can be used They're like close proximity to you know my utilities And are you familiar with those at all? Absolutely You know again experience. I had out normal or a bunch of guys who was sub drivers and nuclear weapons experts and all that and Yeah, you know For example About 15 years ago DoD decided to test a small capability nuclear uh EMP Uh, out of their testing range in uh, New Mexico So you got a bunch of cars and they started and

34:29Layed out of so many volts per square meter and they finally got to the point that some of the cars started to short out I'll deal with this what happened No They stopped the report they set the cars back because they were rental cars and they didn't want to destroy any of them One DoD How many thousand vehicles a year that they could have blown apart with the EMP to get a good accurate data Oh, no, they rented 50 cars and then quickly took them back Uh, it didn't well that that's that whoever was in charge of that should have been fired or else they had a separate agenda Yes, exactly Um, yes, so uh, there's small scale capability my frustration has always meant Maybe it never gets it right And we're going to EMP and then we'll shut them down for 30 seconds so we can break into this bank vault or whatever

35:34So I'm hoping my movie with a more realistic portrayal uh Creates a better public awareness You know, um, there was a book uh called nuclear war or a scenario by a lady named Annie Jacobs. Oh Scary. She has a section on EMP in there that's really terrifying I quoted it extensively in an article that I wrote uh, that was about an EMP attack on the United States Mm-hmm, but um You know, I for my attack I I'd used submarine launch ballistic missiles that are coming out of a The Gulf You know south of Louisiana a few hundred miles In the they're fired under depressed trajectory and it only takes five to seven minutes for the war It's to reach her a point of detonation, which we did I chose targets over Ohio Nevada and Texas because we have the three grids in the US And I had data from the Meditat Corporation where they had it they had actually tested a hundred kilotonin warheads

36:35You know That they had studies they they didn't do the actual tests, of course But they were they they identified those points as uh where they You would be very effective at knocking out all the critical infrastructure in the three grids And so I Just I've been horrified by the idea that this could happen and I um It's you know, but like you say familiarity breeds contempt and people just They they don't really accept the idea that um that it could happen Hopefully your your movie is gonna maybe change some of that Yeah, I ask you a question. Do you recall it's been ten years or more now That sudden launch of a ballistic missile off the coast of California Do you remember that and it was oh, don't worry about it nothing that nothing to uh nothing happened here Was that ten years ago? It's happened. It was an SLBM It was definitely an SLBM and

37:37speculation might have been North Korea, but Nobody reacted to it You know, I'll be honest with you. I was I don't I didn't know about that. Um, I know that they typically test, you know Our ICBMs from Vanderburg. They're up, you know California Yeah, that's our land-based system. Right. Was it I was testing an SLBM or what but anyhow Be a flat trajectory Our targets are gone even before the president could begin to react Well, we have you know, we have missile defense, but You know, they they would be able to detect the launch like that, but they they couldn't uh, sorry I get my dog you're looking at the window. Oh, what kind of talk you got All right, it's a nine-month-old Labrador retriever who's uh Waited about 80 pounds and it's like a bubble in the china shop She wants to go outside, but um, she's having her first heat. So

38:41I don't want her to go out and meet the neighbor's dog I'm gonna put her in her pen eventually. We have a system where uh They let their dog out at night and let mine out a day and it's working so far But that's kind of kind of digression from nuclear EMT It's talking about that Oh, no, I have two golden uh golden doodles here They're the ones that were kicking the storm off that side over the bear Well, you know the dogs have become like a part of your family and oh I've been thinking I even thought about well when if the system breaks down I want to have enough dog food for my dog You know When I was writing one second after I'm typing away one night and something I realized my Golden retriever was asleep by my feet So I wrote into the book what happened With one of the dogs and it's not

39:42And it was about a month later new language called me up and we've been friends for years and I have the book going So I sent part of that up with the dog he called me back 15 and he was crying He said why do you have to write it about the dog if I said because That's a real that will happen. So yeah, I always people love their pets, you know, I do a couple months after food on him for them Yeah, they know part of my lives Well, we take so many things for granted now. I mean and we've we've Unfortunately we deindustrialized the United States at the point where We are dependent on a lot of imports that um But you know if if something breaks down in society to the point where we can't make food deliveries You know the EMP will will knock out um all our ground air and and sea transportation systems Our communication systems that will prevent fuel and food deliveries

40:43And you know your refrigerations not kind of work your fridge, you know, you're heating and cooling system in your house wouldn't And so just in a matter of a few days like my sister lives in in New York for example And that's a constant flow of food coming into the city because You got millions of people right there, and you know, they have to you know have to eat and all that would stop. I mean Um, and then it would be chaos, and so I imagine that's probably going to be Is that going to be part of uh, what's depicted in your movie? Uh, I call a Maslow's hierarchy of needs for uh A world with EMP uh, the first whenever I'm doing radio interviews and if they're not familiar with the subject I'll ask them When you got out this morning, where did your water come from? What came out of the answer? It's again magical faucet But your water your okay here. Here's how it goes water supply is shuttle immediately Because the pump is so gone the filtration systems etc

41:46Two pharmacies within your pharmacies are shut down immediately because computerized systems and all of that So medication is gone Uh, command and control Um, I'm interviewing a chief of police on this years ago I said what would you do? He actually picked the phone up And he said wait a minute the phone stuff worked I go right what about my radio doesn't work And it was like oh my god. How do we handle this? So water food, command and control, medication Food average town has about 20 days worth of food On hand And that's what's in your fridge and in the supermarket But then again, most of your food in your supermarkets is refrigerated or frozen right all of it gone Total chaos I agree with Peter Price numbers.
